OMG dude, I don't know how the hell I forgot <a href='http://sc2.sourceforge.net/' target='_blank'>The Ur-Quan Masters</a>. Its Star Controll 2 rewriten and released under the GPL with major help from the original developer. It has the Best.... Game... Dialog.... EVER!

Other freeware games, head over to Home Of The Underdogs (No, i won't link it) and browse games by freeware. There's quite a number of freeware games on there (not abandonware or anything, actual freeware) and quite a few fun ones.
