Which do you think is the best?
I've played the MW1 Demo, MW2, MW2:GBL (Vomit), MW3 Demo and MW4.
I must say MW2 takes the entire god-damned cake for sheer coolness and immersion factor. That sexy female voice telling you that you will be killed for cowardice after you ran away in your Firemoth after catching sight of a pack of three Summoners. The overwhelming feeling of relief as you catch sight of your Dropship hovering above your dust-off zone. The sheer awesomeness of depleting all of your AC20 ammunition in one hit, overheating your Mech and punching a clean hole though the torso of your opponent cannot be matched by any of the others.
The holo-menu and the animated intro movies have yet to be matched in any game for sexyness.
For some inexplicable reason I hated MW4 with a passion. Maybe it was the 2d sprites of running people. Maybe it was the terrible FMV and voice actors. Maybe because it lacked the oldschool mechs and their names. Maybe it was because it was just too unwieldy to play.
As for Ghost Bear’s Legacy… shudder
Can someone give me a brief review of MW3? From what I played in the demo it looked coolish, but not mind-blowing.

for alot of the reasons you stated, and dont forget the constomizations of each and evry mech chassy.... damn that game was awesome
thnx for bringing back memories ^_^
The soundtracks own, though
The reason i didnt like MW2 was that im a person that likes graphic quality aswell as gameplay quality and MW2 just didnt cut it on the graphic side.
MW4 was a big let down as they took the ability to customize your bot how you liked it and instead added restrictions on it, guess you cant expect much from microsoft tbh. However i did find the plot to the game very good and the cut scenes were excellent in quality and acting.

The multiplayer was a terrible client-client system and everything turned into a UAC20 fest, but it was a damn fun game.

I dont know running around at 200KPH with enough flamers to kill anything was fun .
Or you could always go LRM nut and carry a ton of em enough to destroy any bot in 2 salvos. Ah how i loved the supernova...
MW2 pwns me.
It saddens my the my mechwarrior 2 (windows 95/pentium edition) doesnt work direct X now
I haven't played 4: mercs yet so I can't judge on that one.
>_>
Mechwarrior 2 you lose a leg and you're stuck standing there thinking "why didn't i take a jumpjet, WHY didn't i take a jumpjet".
Mechwarrior 3 you lose a leg and you just die.
Mechwarrior 4 you lose a leg and it's crippled, so you can still sort of limp, provided your other leg is intact.

Blasphamer!
Mechassualt
*me ducks and avoids thrown objects*
J/K. Mechwarrior 2 rules, I played the demo for that OVER and OVER and OVER until I stopped being cheap and got the game
I hate the path Mechwarrior took. MW3 was awful, as is MW4, they've dumbed it all down and taken the fun away. Originally it was less an action game, but a mech sim, i loved that, but more and more it's lost what made it Mechwarrior, and i've entirely lost interest.
Anyone know if Mechwarrior 2 works under XP, i still have my CD lying around and i feel the need for some sexiness.
It seems many people have tried.
They tried and failed?
They tried and died.

I never tried it on my Win98 though.

Yes i think starsiege was way better than all of the mecc games.
STARSIEGE RULES!!!!
Mechwarrior 2 is not abandonware.
...
I have to admit that, for all the weapon balance issues, there are few things more fun than in Mech2 Mercs loading one of the heavier mechs with three flamers, getting in real close to the enemy, and sending your heat gauge all the way into the red (overriding shutdown, of course). The computer never overrides shutdown, so this stops the enemy dead in their tracks. Even better, if you've designed the mech specifically for this (ie, you've got heaps of heat sinks) you can do it again, and watch the enemy mech pop open like a frog in a microwave.

here here
Mechwarrior 4 Mercs is really awesome, although, the new mektek mechpack (which EVERYONE HAS TO USE!!!) Brings up some old favourites like the maurauder, but wastes valuable mechspace with **** mechs like URBANMECH!!!
In other news, there is a Mechwarrior movie in the planning, I'm not sure how it's going along, but if it's got anything similar to the combat we see in Mechwarrior 4:Vengeance's intro (with better acting). It will own.
P.S. *Bump*... oh and PHEAR THE KORE!!!
Phoenix Hawks were the shiz...didn't like Shadow Hawks much.
I remember playing that as a tyke at my dad's office.
1989 or something... I was terrible at it, to say the least, didn't even try and follow the story line, I just wanted to get a Lance of BattleMasters. As far as the story went I think I went into the bar talked to the barman and left it at that.
MW2 really did rock;
Great Gameplay, pretty good graphics at the time, a FANTASTIC opening intro and all the extra gubbins I'm sure not alot of people bothered with... ie all the Lore and stuff about the Clans Vs Comstar forces on that planet.
Haven't played 3 or 4. Checked out MC 1 or 2 seemed alright.
Best 'Mech EVAR goes to the TimberWolf, or MadCat as you Inner-sphere scum call it.
Sheer cool. The TimberWolf. You could load her up with twin ER-PPCs, a couple of medium lasers and a bank of SRMs and she was unstoppable.
--Scythe--
Timber Wolf = second best mech ever, but nothing compares to the sheer firepower of a Dire Wolf a la Mechwarrior 3. Load it down with four LRM-20s, Artemis FCS, a couple ER Meds and plenty of heatsinks, and you can drop an Annihilator in two salvos.

It depends on how much of a Battletech fan you are.
The Clan Tech engines come with 10 double heat sinks, hence the imbalance for Clan players (Shockwave = Long time Ghost Bear player, on the board as well as PC) to use Laser weaponry, but that was also in the background for the Clans.
One of the main tenets of Clan life was efficiency. Nothing is wasted, hence the OmniMech design. Ammunition based weapons are by definition fairly wasteful, hence a reliance on Laser weaponry.
Oh, and Dire Wolf is the nub mech of choice, tbh. True Clan players will always use the lightest available tonnage, due to the bidding procedure.
I played a veteran Star of 2 Shadow Cats, a Mad Dog (Vulture to you dirty IS types) and 3 points of Elementals in the boardgame. Dropping Assault mechs in that situation just makes you the man.
Random Battletech Fact : The first Clan mech ever met by the Inner Sphere was a Timberwolf. And it raped an IS Lance to prove the point.
EDIT : Oh, and Microsoft was the WORST THING EVER to happen to Battletech. They killed Shadowrun, dumbed down MechWarrior to basically Q3 in Mechs, and radically changed how the game works. Mechwarrior 4 is awful, 2 was the best.
What I'd expect is that a laser is your general purpose weapon, an autocannon tears mechs to shreds at close range but requires ammo, a bog standard machinegun isn't very effective but good because of the low dh/dt, a gauss gun is the weapon of choice for extreme range work...
I tried for a while to design a mech that could rely on ballistic weapons and be about as effective as a laser-based mech. Aside from the expected range and endurance issues, they were all less effective. Then I did the maths and found out why.
Let's compare the Clan UAC/10 with the Clan ERMLAS:

CODE

Heat Dmg Rng Mass Crit Ammo Dmg\heat Dmg\mass Dmg\crit Dmg\ammo
UAC/10 3 10 500 10 4 10 3.333 1 2.5 100
ERMLAS 4 7 408 2 1 none 1.75 7 7 na

Look at the damage per mass and damage per crit. Instead of mounting a UAC/10 you can mount four medium lasers, doing more than twice the damage per hit. That's not even considering the mass, which is further in the favour of the medium laser. Factor in ammunition weight and critical space (in which you could mount yet ANOTHER laser or two, or your heat sinks) and the UAC/10 comes off even worse.
What I'm trying to say is, if the game was balanced then the damage per mass and damage per crit would be the same (or very close); you'd expect the UAC to be bigger and weigh more, but do more damage to compensate. It'd be far better at tearing open Mechs in close quarters, but be limited by the ammunition. Instead, it's pretty much pointless to mount a UAC instead of a set of MLAS.
I could also mention the machinegun. If you mount ten machineguns, you get the same effect as an AC/10 with NO heat. Basically, the machinegun and the MLAS are the two best weapons in the game. The only reason to use another weapon is if you need some special feature which it provides (ie, you'd use a LLAS for sniping, LRMs if you want some extra firepower). It's especially irritating in Mechwarrior Mercenaries, when you'd be stupid to buy anything other than vast amounts of medium lasers, except for a handful of auxilliary weapons.
I mean, I know energy weapons are meant to be great and all, but there's supposed to be some drawback...
[edit]On a second reading of your post, I suppose this could be due to the development of clan weapons favouring lasers over ballistic weapons. However, I seem to recall this happening with Mech 2 Mercenaries as well, and that's IS weapons. I also remember reading in the clan archive that in a certain Trial (I thiiink it was a Trial of Refusal by the Inner Sphere against the Clans; some invasion or other) the offensive clans each had a seperate objective, only two achieved theirs - Wolf and one other. Wolf used energy weapons exclusively. However, it implies that the other clans still made use of ballistic weapons as part of their regular arsenal; the numbers suggest that there's no reason to use ballistic weapons at all, machinegun excluded[/edit]
Oh, and the Clans didn't actually prefer the lasers over the ammunition based weaps, just lasers fit into Clan theology better. Also, the PC game missed/changed some rules because of simplicity. (For example, the ERPPC in MW2 was a projectile, which it patently isn't, and you can't indirect fire things properly)
The one that annoyed me most in MW games is the Pulse Lasers. In Battletech, the simple reason to use a Pulse is the fact it has worse range, but hits more often (-2 to hit, and you try to roll LOW in Battletech) whereas ER had more range. In the games, ER rules all. Very annoying, but the way it is.
Although I do agree, some of the weapons are simply 'better' than others. Just the way the background was written I guess. Remember that in the background, some of the equipment used is UBER rare, and rarely found on Battlemechs.
Agreed. >.< Mech4: Mercs was ok, but the regular Mech4(And it's multiplayer) Were total crap. >.< Haven't played Mech2 in a fe years, so I can't remember it all too well, should probably dig my CD out and try it again...
