To anyone who says "oh em gee clans are teh unbalanceddd!!" think for a moment, why do you think multiplayer is seperated into IS and Clan sections? because clan weapons are superior in every way to there IS counterparts.
Im glad microsoft stayed true to mechwarrior and did not change this part.
(Actually, the IS ppc does have some advantages over the clan variant. )

GWAR - He wasn't saying they're unbalanced vs the Clan versions, just that the individual weapons are unbalanced (I.E Some are simply better than others)
MW4 is set post-3058 anyway, and it all went downhill from there, Battletech wise.

to be honest the conversion from boardgame to PC game wasn't too well thought out in the heat stakes ^^;
I had a puma loaded to the teeth with heatsinks, a couple of jumpjets and a single PPC for an arm in the board game and I had to land in water just to fire half the time =3
Course, there's nothing like ripping someone's arm off and beating them to death with it... gah, the board game had so much that was missed in the PC games =s
As for the mechwarrior games I still vote for 2... 4 was like mechwarrior lite -.-

Gem,
I thought we weren't finding any more reasons for me to like you.
Battletech as well? :o
*explodes in fluffle*
EDIT : Did I see you mention using melee? YOU FREEBIRTH!!! True Clanners never would
My little addition MW2:MERCs or MW4:MERC are the only real choices as the rest were flawed or lacked the gameplay.
I would really love to see a MW game based on all the books that were released about MW that way it might be true to the History.
Star League, etc. General Alexander Kernsey, etc. Inner Sphere Wars, etc.
-EDIT-
To get MW2:Mercs working on windows XP
Install MW2:Mercs
Go to start menu - find the MS - DOS or Command window Load it
All the instructions below go into the command menu
Type cd C:\ and Press Enter Type cd Program Files and Press Enter Type cd Actvision and Press Enter Type cd Mercenaries and Press Enter Type SETSOUND.exe and Press Enter Select "Select and configure Audio and Sound devices" and Press Enter Select "Creative Sound Blaster or 100% compatable" and Press Enter Select "Attempt to Configure Sound Card Automatically" and Press Enter If it comes up saying it has setup the sound card successfully Press the Enter Key If not go back through and select a Different "Creative Sound Blaster or 100% compatable" That will have setup the Sound Card On the menu with ok Select OK and press Enter Select Done and click enter Type Merc.exe and Press Enter The game should then load as normal.
For all you people who have never played a DOS game SHAME on you - you could have worked this out for yourselves if you had.
Stock Mechwarrior 4 (not mercenaries) was my favorite.
My fav mech:
Cougar full speed with 3ER Clan large lasers, and almost no armor. In ctf that cougar was sooo good to chase other runners when they had the flag. Heck, if you aim for the central torso you even have a chance vs a nova with 7ER large lasers or a daishi, if you zigzag a lot, take cover, snipe with JJ's, in passive radar etc etc... (but dont get hit... or instant boom). One weapon group of 3 lasers for when you know you are gonna hit the CT, and three other "groups" to fire each laser separately, to constantly keep those big daishi's from aiming My favorite roles were "flag runner", "runner chaser" and last but not least, i really enjoyed to leg nova's in CTF, so they cant run after me (they rarely put armor in legs, in favor of more lasers so it's one shot or two).
Of course i rarely used this mech on a game of team-attrition (but i did sometimes and had pretty good scores! and yea i have screenshots if needed, look at that 12-1 ). The catapult was also pretty deadly for a support mech (cover+jumpjets+LRM-chaining). And let's not forget the madcat 1 when you need some heavy-action, or to guard a flag.
Very tactical game, i particulary like the multiplayer side of it (single player was ok.. but a tad easy and short for my taste)
*Tears*
Hey the screenshots i was talking about are still on my old ISP, check it out: Linky. And no no, no, don't look at my svencoop nub mapping!
lol, unless I'm getting my chassis mixed up puma was a Inner sphere mech anyways ^~
Seriously though... in both mechwarrior 2 and 3 you could happily turn your mech into a walking heatsink/medium pulse laser array and cut things in half with your gigantic green beam. It didn't help that in both the ranges for them seemed to be slightly broken XD
When I voted MW2 I guess I should've said the merc version... I loved picking contracts, especially when it turned out to be a special one. My fave being the one where I was paid to eliminate a small group of trapped mechs. They radioed me as I approached their position offering me double and in true merc fashion I slew the mechs the DCMS had sent along with me to make sure I'd done the job =3
Up until then I only like the Draconis because they paid well
I live in fear of the day they make a MW game where the elementals can latch onto you and start tearing your armour off. Every mechgame I'd panic when I see the funny lil elementals thinking 'this is it!' only to find once again they're just squishy cannon fodder =/
I suppose while you can't ram people off cliffs, smack them trees or punt them in the face with your arm cannon at least they let us do Death From Above... ~huggles jump jets~

Mmmm.... Anti Mech Tactics = PWN.
Anti Mech Tactics done by Elementals = EVIL PWN
"Oh, what's that, your IS infantry are attacking my legs? Nah, we'll just boost on up there and rip the head open, is that okay by you?"
Did anyone ever play the Battletech beta? If not, it was a Mechwarrior MMORPG set in the IS before the clan invasion. It was a good idea but poorly executed and was canceled.
My personal favorite mechs to use while playing MW3 online, is a plodder/turret Daishi loaded with uac2s. Quite funny if you can play with freinds to have light autocannon duels.
Clan Wolf Jade Falcon Steel Vipers Nova Cats Smoke Jaguars Ghost Bear(?)
Diamond Sharks apparently also took part, I thought it was only 6 Clans involved?

Ah, I thought it might have been Tukkayid. That's the battle I was referring to.

I was in a planetary league and they go by date, I remember I was at the peak of my game and I was in Comstar. (Basically Imagine AT&T with 100 ton assault mechs) When we had the battle for Tukkayid. It was several hours of awesomeness. Something like several hundred thousand assault mechs were used....definately one of my best gaming moments. I had my custom outfight Atlas with only Inner Sphere weapons....I did damn good
If you've got an XboX, give MechAssault a try. It should only be 20$, or you can get it as part of the XboX Live setup kit. I still break out the old 'Cat (The Madcat for you non-assaulters) almost every time I get together with friends for a 'boX fest.
I've only played 3&4, but I think 4 was the best. In Battletech, a pilot couldn't modify a mech like the player can in 1,2&3. Well, not without it being worked on for a few months straight, then there's getting the parts, getting them transported, etc. What I didn't like about the old system was that you could fill up a mechs missle racks with lasers or autocannons, completly defeating their purpose. Mech 4 did have its own problems, someone mentioned the 2d sprites for people and animals, but you're not exactly gonna be admiring fully modeled techs and astechs running around on the ground while you've got 2 companies of enemy mechs firing at you. The Mektech paks are good for those who want some of the old skool mechs, just don't expect to see any Warhammers anytime soon. Well, at least no Warhammers that look like the older one did, there was a big court case between FASA and Robotech because Robotechs Tomahawk bot looked just like Battletechs Warhammer. As a result, neither company can use the design again. Both war machines still exist in their respective series, but next time you see them, you might not recognise them. If a 5th Mechwarrior game was made, one with the traditional control system seen in 1,2 & 4, a wide assortment of mechs & weapons, an engrosing storyline, MW4's customisation system and an easy to use custom decal program, it would be perfect.

The whole point of 2+3's customization system is it is exactly the same as the boardgame one. That's what made it so good.
Shadowcat with Clan Gauss, 6 Machine Guns & 2 MPLAS. My fave 'Mech ever for the boardgame.
Hide in cover, if infantry come for you rape them with the MG's, jump behind an ****.Mech, use Targeting Computer (your gunnery skill will be so good for being undertonnage in most combats you won't care) to aim for a location, Gauss rifle rear armour off then pump 2MPLAS & 6MG in.
That's as many as EIGHT critical rolls. That's a very dead ****.Mech often.
The more you think about it the more a lot of things from the boardgame were lost in translation to the PC format. Like I said earlier the heat system just doesn't seem to work like it should (I can fire a considerable amount more firepower in the games than I ever could on the board =P ) and the one thing I forgot until shocksy brought it to mind is how hard it was to actually hit things in the boardgame. It even went so far as to take into account what direction they were going in (assuming I'm not getting mixed up with metal gear rules here) so that the fact a target coming or going directly towards you was easier to hit. But ingame it's just somehow lost. Hitting a mech going at full speed regardless of cover and range is considerably easier than it ever was in ye olde hex-based game =/
mech warrior 4 mercs is by the far the latrest and best mech warrior game theres nothing like stamping around in a gladiator with 7 Ai helping you ushely equip the rest of your squad with heavy arnoured abd big close and personel weps, but give the big long range guns to your secondary lance, and if you ride the black market right you can have a bigger bad **** unit than any other team on the game, i rember at one point when i recieved a report from my arch enermy saying "your outnumbered and outgunned" well he got one part right, just before i manged to nuke his mech with 4 artillary cannons and about 5 heavy guess guns, from my team.
A mechwarrior MMOFPS would own
