    Yeah, currently it's just HLMV that I'm using.

    if i did it this thing would be at 5000 polies <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
    nice man

    not bad but the canister needs to have more sides. 6-8 sides work good for barrels but not so well for larger cylinders.
  • MintmanMintman Join Date: 2003-05-30 Member: 16866Members
    Thanks for the input BAshh, it's 8 at the moment, so I'll increase that as you've suggested.

    Oh, I've started work on a proper skin for some parts, done the canister and most of the front of the gun.

    send me the model and ill show off a sexy render
  • MintmanMintman Join Date: 2003-05-30 Member: 16866Members
    Not yet, there's a couple of skinning errors on some parts you can't see that I haven't fixed yet <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo--> Maybe when I've made the alterations to the model I want to do and have made a full skin of reasonable quality for it.

    Are there any free/shareware renders I could use myself?
  • BAshhBAshh Join Date: 2003-08-26 Member: 20222Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
    cinima 4d but it wont save the renders. also before you do that fix smoothing groups (find a tutorial it's hard to explain) and find yourself some texturing tutorials if you feel like doing it yourself. I dont mean to discurage you because it looks great, and needs a proper skin to go with, thats all. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo--> I'd like to see it finished.
  • MintmanMintman Join Date: 2003-05-30 Member: 16866Members
    Well I plan to finish it but I'm pretty busy this weekend so probably won't be able to touch it again until Sunday/Monday night.

    Thanks for the pointers by the way BAshh!

    700 - odd polies is a good, low-ish poly weapon. always remember that the hand models will add to the final polycount.

    you could really use some smoothing groups there, my man.
  • MintmanMintman Join Date: 2003-05-30 Member: 16866Members
    Yeah, I've not done smoothing groups before (first model), at the moment I've just got the different sections of the weapon grouped and auto smoothing applied on them.

    I'll be finding a tutorial for smoothing groups next time I work on it.

    Had half an hour to kill so I changed the cyclinder and the housing just above it to be made up of 16 sided cylinders instead of 8. Put the polycount up to 793 but it does look a whole lot better, ta for the tip BAshh!

    Got Cinema 4D downloading at the moment so you're still stuck with HLMV screenies for the moment!

    looking nice mintman

    I find cinema 4d much easier to work with compared to 3dsm, but i cant find any way to export animations in it to another format.

    anyone else use Cinema 4d or do everyone on here use 3dsm ?

    could you add a small flame to the model? <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    very nice. and cap'n panka, he could add a flame to it but it'd be best added as a sprite. im not quite sure how to add custom sprites to one model but oh well. and mintman? my last suggestion for you is to post pictures of it in milkshape, in flatshaded mode (not hlmv, ms) because it gives us a better idea of the gun. Still, all and all, pretty good.

    I thought of something like this:
  • BAshhBAshh Join Date: 2003-08-26 Member: 20222Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
    but sprites for flames would look much better. trust me. and wth, its my welder with a flame on it... i wonder who did that... even though i did say they could, it makes no sense... its a welder, not a blowtorch :\. Anyway modeled flames dont really look nearly as good as a good sprite job does.

    Seriously I like it the way it is...even if it's a bit small.

    uh... iirc Daza400 h4xed it onto the model... but I'm not sure <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    the only problem with sprites is:

    I don't want it to look like the TFC Flamethrower <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Flatshaded milkshape screeny, as per request:
  • MintmanMintman Join Date: 2003-05-30 Member: 16866Members
    Hmm, that doesn't show the front of the gun too well. This one should show it a bit better.

    I'm having problems with smoothing groups. I've tried searching both these forums, google and sites like polycount but have found nothing that's really helped me. Does anyone have a bookmark they could point me towards or something?

    Edit: never mind, I found one on these forums (don't know why it didn't come up before). It's here for those who are in a similar predicament: <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=49789&hl=smoothing+groups' target='_blank'>http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/in...moothing+groups</a>

    so... you done yet?
  • MintmanMintman Join Date: 2003-05-30 Member: 16866Members
    I've not had too much time to work on it. I've got a lot of coursework on at the moment. Once that's out the way and I've managed to get the feel of smoothing groups then it should be finished pretty quick.
  • MintmanMintman Join Date: 2003-05-30 Member: 16866Members
    Ok, I've decided I can't skin well enough for this model (tis my first one after all). So here's the ms3d file, a gif of the skinmesh I did (probably a bit poo because it's my first one and the skin I'd done so far.

    Anyone feel free to carry this on.
