It's obvious that your ideas about the knife need <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=19&t=47148' target='_blank'>axing.</a> Seriously, I'm going to <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=19&t=52418' target='_blank'>fracture</a> your miconceptions about the knife. What do you want? A <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=19&t=47507' target='_blank'>"laser knife"</a> for this game's futuristic themes? Lord Almigty. This game is about <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=19&t=55054' target='_blank'>gritty</a> realistic <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=19&t=47169&st=0' target='_blank'>weapons</a>, not <a href='http://ns.fatmilk.net/files/Dragonlord%20HA&S.zip' target='_blank'>"fancy movie"</a> knives. Sheesh.

Tempting you basicly have a point. No one would go face to face against a beast with a 4 inch blade.
But why in hell would someone go face to face against a beast with a huge blade either? Honestly, no one would want a beast like a skulk near him. That's why weapons are used, ne?
But the point is, what would possibly be the point of carrying a huge blade around you? If the point is to avoid close contact and use long range weaponry instead, carrying a big blade is just a waste of energy and uhm... pocket space <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> ?
The blade is propably just for emergency usage, ie. medical needs or making salami at the marine base. In an extreme case, you might be dumb enough to go poke a huge space cow with your little dinky blade. But why in hell would you do that?
And as far as it comes for the design of the blade, you can always change your knife model.
Well, after putting some thought into this topic, and after being slightly convinced by the original poster, i have come up with this nifty idea: LIGHT SABRES It would have to be a knife upgrade, and an actual good weapon. Make it do 100 damage. You would also be able to use the force and throw the light sabre away with a secondary function, the light sabre alt-fire would never miss because a Jedi TSA Marine has 100% reflexes. However, to make sure the alt-fire will not disrupt game balance, let's make sure it takes away HP from the sabre-wielding marine. Say 1hp per throw. The swinging range would be about as long as an onos' gore. The upgrade would cost 10 res, cos we cant have marines have such a formidable weapon for free now can we.
In short: Aliens are the primary melee fighters, marines are the primary long range fighters (No idea about that '9mm' issue, though. Whoever stated that all weapons use the same calibre? We're in the age of nanites, babeh!). The marines will thus not get strong melee weaponry, and the aliens won't be outfitted with MGs. Deal?
