Battlefield: Vietnam

<div class="IPBDescription">rocks</div>I picked up BF:Vietnam today and wow, its really good. Definately more than just a bf1942 mod, it has a lot of different gameplay changes that I really like.

For starters it looks really good. And you wouldn't think it, but the ability to broadcast the music from inside vehicles really changes the game, its so awesome. :D

As far as gameplay goes, I really like what they did w/ the capturing system. Rather than having 1 person be able to take a flag by themselves, you now have to have at least 1 more person in the capture areas (which are bigger) than the other team to even begin capturing. And if you have a *LOT* more you can capture very very quickly, like within seconds.

Hueys are easier to fly than in BF1942 mods though I find that the whole using a chain to link things is neigh IMPOSSIBLE :x

I'd write a longer review, but I'm gonna go back to playing it. :D

    I'm contemplating between this and UT2k4 <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    My rig can stand the ut2k4 demo on low-esque settings. but I just re-tried the bf: seceret weapons demo and wasn't that satisfied. i'm guessing they haven't made it less cpu intensive, but for ut2k4, i don't quite have 5+ gigs to blow <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    The thing that turned me off from 1942 was the mass amount of smacktards. Plane campers. People who never even bothered to cap a point. etc.

    There a lot of smacktards in Vietnam? If no, I may consider picking it up.

    So far, no. There are 2 or 3 huey campers on the server but most are actually pretty good at flying it when they eventually get in it. Hell I've only seen 2 or 3 "APC/Huey take off with 1 person in it while 5 people yell for pickups" incidents.

    Since the points capture soo much faster w/ more people around you it really almost forces people to use teamwork, which is great. :D

    Has anything been done about the map load times? Even with 512 Ram and a P4 2.0 gighz, it takes horrendously long to load any map on BF1942 <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    BF:V has a nice atmosphere to it, that's true, but gameplay wise I'm really not impressed. Desert Combat has been offering this for ages now, and frankly I have a lot more fun playing DC than BF:V .

    If they make a DC mod for BF:V that would be supurb, as there are lots of gameplay features in BF:V that could really shine in a mod. But BF:V as a stand-alone product? Not my cup of tea I'm afraid.

    Like I said, the atmosphere of BF:V is great. But that alone can't hide a product that is essentially a rehash of bf1942.

    You heard doom. Its not a mod, not a expansion, it truly is a new game. While it may not be a full blown sequel, its as close as were gonna get.

    BFV rocks all levels of MP goodness.

    Going to a 500 player lan this weekend. Can't wait~~

    Though I do recommend a few games in private just to get the hang of the helicopter. I also recommend staying in 1st person view....

    Its similar in length, though I think BF:V is actually a bit faster. Or maybe the kickass soundtrack just makes me not notice ;)

    Some people on Shacknews were saying they went out and bought a stick of RAM to upgrade their system to 1GB and that BF:V loads a whole lot faster and runs better. Only $40 so I think I'll be doing that too, I've been needing a gig for awhile :D

    P.S. anybody else really like the propaganda speakers? :D

    Is BF:V a stand-a-lone game or do you have to have Battlefield installed?
    I'm tempted by it but I might keep my cash for Metal Gear: Twin Snakes.

    For the last time BF:V is a sequal not a mod not an expansion or an add on its a completely revised and upgraded version of the first game.

    Is it capable of running over a 56k without giving me a few extra neuroses? The original BF really was a waste of my money... stupidly hoped for HL-style netcode and maybe even an actual SP campaign.

    DY357LX: As much as Battlefield: Vietnam rocks, NOTHING should keep you away from Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes! But that one first, buy the required gamecube if you don't have one.

    Necro: Make sure you're running the absolute latest nvidia drivers. I had to upgrade mine to get it to work. And what res are you in? I get a pretty smooth framerate most of the time at 800x600 medium quality no FSAA no Antisophicthingies

    Edcrab: The netcode is the same as BF1942's after the latest patch. If you still have it, reinstall and patch it up and if turns fine (the code was reworked a whole bunch and is a LOT better than 2 years ago) then you should be okay for BF:V.

    I found some excellent FAQ's and Tip pages for BF:V!
    <a href='http://www.gamespy.com/articles/march04/bfvtips/index.shtml' target='_blank'>Some really good tips from Gamespy</a> (Yeah I know, but still they're good tips)
    <a href='http://www.planetbattlefield.com/bfv/game/intel/communityfaq.shtml' target='_blank'>General FAQ</a> on PlanetBattlefield
    <a href='http://www.planetbattlefield.com/bfv/game/intel/traps/' target='_blank'>Guide to Booby Traps</a> also on PBF
    <a href='http://www.planetbattlefield.com/bf1942/strategy/artillery/' target='_blank'>Guide a Mortar Fire</a> which is actually for BF1942, but the two mortars are identical so it still works for BF:V

    Now if you'll excuse me, its time for more BF:Vietnam :D

    I'm frickin lovin' this game, just got it tonight as an early birthday present.

    Huge classic rock fan, so the soundtrack I got as a bonus is awesome too. I always bump CCR when I hop in a jeep, it adds so much to the atmosphere, same with the PA speakers. One of the maps has an American military base under siege and throughout the base you hear a disc jockey on the PA making jokes and announcements and stuff.

    We all need to invade a server sometime. <!--emo&::marine::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/marine.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='marine.gif' /><!--endemo-->
