you will always be detected when hacking actualy, you wont bedetected untill you start hacking if you off the lasers and the motion detecters, but as soon as you start you will be detected.
A fun toy for spys is to cut a couple of beames and then quickly scamper to the oposite end and start your hack.
As for how to get there quickly as merc? well, most people get carless and start making noise, as soon as you see the noise orient yourself ABOVE it (near a stair case), once they start the hack you can generaly drop down fast enugh to run in and taser them with a couple %s left on the capp (then kill the smeggers)
and for spy traps: they are trip lines, generaly I put down some over by the airducts (you know at one end of the hall, there are those air ducts running through all the levels).
put a couple in doorways.
And for Mines: put them below vents (you can't drop chaff if your in a vent, something that is stupid, and thus they drop down and BOOM)
The demo only includes a single map, and I believe that the servers you're seeing in the demo are demo-only servers. I'm sure of it, as a matter of fact

For spy traps - I usually like to put them in dark places - cokepoints. well, all you have to do is hit the little box in the bottom right (show all versions)
then you are gtg
oh, and thanks for the link to the patch
I never get a ping under 300 joining a game of puppy helmet.
I've noticed with the merc that you can hit your use key when walking along and you will perform a charge that can knock spies on their ****. You move faster for a second or so an your screen goes a bit fuzzy. Useful for rushing towards things being hacked.
The upstairs ND133 in the demo behind that curtain. At the start of a match I always run up there and place a lazer mine on the frame of the doorway in which the curtain is hanging BEHIND the curtain. So it's invisible and silent. I almost always catch a spy unawares using this method.
And I'm not entirely sure what those beeps and arrows on my reticle mean. They appear from time to time. The center also seems to get a blob in or or something. And I'm not talking about the firing cone thinger.
After you charge, scythenub, you get slowed down significantly (perhaps to catch your breath? ) I don't think it actually helps, in the grand scheme of things.
And oh yeah, Gecko - the 1.01* patch is for the demo version. The 1.1 patch is for the retail version

yah, charge I believe actualy slows you down in the long run.
Those arows?
thats the spys moving around! when ever a spy makes a noise you get an arrow indicating direction. If they are above/below the inner area will show that
combine that with wall hack (EMF Vision) and those silly spys on the celing of the 3rd floor tend to get plastered
remember, EMF view ONLY shows spys ussing an altered view mode (heat/night) so if your a spy, don't use those modes exept for short instances, and if your getting fired at, turn it off. And Mercs, remember to cycle your view modes regularly
personaly I run around with just the FLight (no more sneaky buggers, that entire face the wall trick don't work).
Oh, and remember, TAZER IS YOUR FRIEND! (insta KO On a spy)
True that - the taser can be so very useful. A single hit with it knocks a spy out cold - ripe for the shooting-in-the-head
And I was always wondering what those crazy things on the reticule were too - I always figured they were probably the spies in some twisted way. kind of gives the mercs a crazy advantage, though. Meh - with time will come dangerously competent spies

I am curently trying to become a severly deadly merc, so as to learn what I need to do as a spy
Things I have learned: 1) You can't drop flack when in vents, thus certain vents are basicaly death traps (3rd floor, rear room) 2) As spys learn to go around with their special visions turned off, mercs need to learn to just go around with FLights (most peoples tricks consist of standing facing the wall, with heat/night vision off. A quick FLight sweep and a taser to the back = dead spy) 3) I suck at stealth
The few times I have gotten to play spy I have severly sucked (exept against incompitent mercs who I managed to copmleatly avoid )
I tried using the tazer multiple times to no avail...it didn't seem to have any effect at all...do I have to stand next to them and shove in it their back?
Other than that...there aren't many 2v2 games...and lots of people like being the spies. It's pretty fun, and worth buying...except my $100 is put away for Halo 2 and Half-Life 2.
The taser only has a range of a foot or two - you DO have to be pretty dern close. But t'is definitely worth it
And that's the other problem I encountered - utter lack of couth from the majority of the players. I can't tell you how many times I've seen someone enter a game where one more merc was needed (usually my teammate), and he will promptly switch to spies and ready up. These people don't even ASK, and end up sucking **** at spying anyhow. So yeah...that sure burns my toast. But other games that I;ve had have been perfectly mature ones
Except when the bleedin' game host leaves because he's got no more lives as a spy. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

More tips from the Merc:
1) yah, tazer is short range, but it is an instant and long KO. Basicaly, you know those spys that will always HS you with their guns, and then run around and snap you? Well instead of trying to shoot em, just pop em with a tazer. You both might get stuned, but his will last MUCH longer, and you can hit him ANYwhere!
2) Grenade+ Tazer + Chase Those silly spys always try to run (and usualy they get away, grumble grumble) Soloution: Lob a nade Way out front: They will either try to ditch and hide, or run into it. If they try to hide or stop, be prepared for a FB, simply tazer them as soon as your are close, It lasts longer then the FB does (also they are frozen nice and neat, time for a Head Shot)
3) I think I said this, but if some one is making a cap, don't try to nade them out (takes to long generaly and they will still manage to capp the tube) instead just run right in and tazer them. Yah, they might drop an FB, but so what? When you clear they will be taking a nap.
Not on Tazers: 4) Spy Cams: THEY MAKE NOISE, and lots of it! Learn the places that spys like to use them (those 2 airductson the third floor are popular). As soon as you here the viip viiip viiip of a camera, lob a nade into each of those vents = Dead spy
Annecdote: I pulled 2 of these off in a row last night. One spy had gone down each zipline (thuse comming in through the 3rd floor from 2 different ducts), they both fired off minicams, I coght the first one (the vent in a room) with a nade, walk out, hear more viiip viip viiip, lob another nade and thats 2 spys gone

Good ideas.
One thing I found out is, is that when it comes to that first node: Not even DOOM is faster than me. I found a way to be DONE with the first node in under 45 seconds.
Speed is of the essence. And the great thing: You can hit the next one almost as fast right afterward.
QuaunautThe longest seven days in history...Join Date: 2003-03-21Member: 14759Members, Constellation, Reinforced - Shadow
Well, here goes:
I don't know the name of the node, but you'll know which one by doing this.
First, go the upper route. Then go to the center pipe that helps hold up the big tank thingy. Climb all the way up. Now, facing AWAY from the wall, jump up onto the left rope. Follow that rope. Right before you hit the wall, drop off, and climb into the vent. Then, get out your gun, shoot the laser covering the vent. Listen for a beeping: If its there, be happy- they've left. But when you climb out of the vent, HOLD FORWARD, so you'll fall and roll, so just in case it DOES blow up, you won't die. Then, turn right(turn on heat vision), and shoot the motion detector in that room(DON'T GO INSIDE, shoot it from in front of the box, facing the room). Heat vision should tell you if there are any other traps. If there aren't, go in, defuse. Once done, just jump out the window to your left. If practiced a few times, should take just 43-48 seconds.
I find it's incredibly hard to get to 116 in time if you're by any of the other nodes. The best you can do is be at 212 and drop down, you'll get there just as they get it..letting you kill them, but they still get the node.
I find it's easier to lightly defend the bottom 2 and cover the top 3 well...unless you're up against two spies. I usually put a laser mine in 202, right under the window sill, so they'll come in and go to the node, but trip the wire and get blown up.
I also like to set a spy trap on the stairs in the hall. Any daring spy coming right up in an unsneaky way gets located easily.

3) I think I said this, but if some one is making a cap, don't try to nade them out (takes to long generaly and they will still manage to capp the tube) instead just run right in and tazer them. Yah, they might drop an FB, but so what? When you clear they will be taking a nap.
Not on Tazers:
4) Spy Cams:
THEY MAKE NOISE, and lots of it!
Learn the places that spys like to use them (those 2 airductson the third floor are popular).
As soon as you here the viip viiip viiip of a camera, lob a nade into each of those vents = Dead spy
Annecdote:
I pulled 2 of these off in a row last night. One spy had gone down each zipline (thuse comming in through the 3rd floor from 2 different ducts), they both fired off minicams, I coght the first one (the vent in a room) with a nade, walk out, hear more viiip viip viiip, lob another nade and thats 2 spys gone
One thing I found out is, is that when it comes to that first node: Not even DOOM is faster than me. I found a way to be DONE with the first node in under 45 seconds.
Speed is of the essence. And the great thing: You can hit the next one almost as fast right afterward.
Oh, and wouldn't work on me probably (I spend most of my time in that area, simply b/c it is so popular with the spys).
MY curent general strat as mercs is this:
Mine up a few of the key spots (that vent you like is one, plus the node under that on the second floor).
Drop some spy traps on the opposit end of the hall (where the laders on the vents are)
drop the rest of my traps around randomly.
Then just run aorund the third floor. I do this b/c you can generaly get downstairs faster then upstairs (you can just jump down some of the way)
I find it's easier to lightly defend the bottom 2 and cover the top 3 well...unless you're up against two spies. I usually put a laser mine in 202, right under the window sill, so they'll come in and go to the node, but trip the wire and get blown up.
I also like to set a spy trap on the stairs in the hall. Any daring spy coming right up in an unsneaky way gets located easily.
He tazers me and drops a prox mine on the wall next to me. So when I get up, the mine explodes.
At least that was the plan...
He placed the mine too far away from me. So I jumped up and started to run off. Unfortunatly I was gunned down in the back.
HAVE YOU NO HONOR?!?!
Now if they would only replace the spies with ninjas!
Mmmmm, ninjas.

Actually if you remember- -I- was the one that killed you. And I shot you in the back, then defaced your...grave. You are lucky that game does not include a "****" button.
*raises hand*
I didn't even notice I was missing a teammate.. ><
Although, in the 3vs1 match I did manage to get all the kills
Although, it was partially because my mic was so low that by the time I could tell my teammates where the spy was, I had been staring at him for like 5 minutes, got fed up and just shot a grenade at him
"One free chiopractic session - today only!" *SNAP*
[EDIT] Anyone have it on XboX? How does it look?
I don't get to do it that often b/c I don't die enugh (thus I always run outa mines realy fast)
@geko, yah, Itend to put a trap in one of the 1st floor rooms, and then the 2 2nd floor ones, simply b/c so many people still love ussing them.
them spytrap up the other entrances
