One thing that Half -Life has, that Halo will never have, is the best game rating evar. Yes. PCXL, the coolest, crassest, funniest mag ever, did this: Half-Life came out. They played it. They loved it. They gave it a 10/10. And then a few weeks later, the multiplayer started working properly. They played it. Clearly, the game was considerably better. But they couldnt give it a better score, it already had a 10/10. So they said "Screw it" and gave it an 11/10.
As far as I know, Half-Life is the only game <u>ever</u> to get a rating above 100%. Oh, and it got "Best Game of All Time" from both the PC Gamer Staff, and the PC Gamer Readers.
I dont think Halo has that under its belt. And Halos level design sucks.

Sure Halo's Graphics are good, making it hard to run on my system. Sure it has physics that get really boring. The story's good, and I wouldn't mind playing it more if my FPS didn't drop like whoa in a firefight. But Half-Life's unltimately better. Gameplay>Graphics.
Whenever I play Halo on PC, I get a headache because the to me it seems that the view that you play in is too zoomed in or somthing....I hate it <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Okay, since most of you guys seemed to have played Halo (or the demo) on PC only (and I'm well aware it was originally designed for computers), but it was designed to be played on Xbox. It runs smoothly on Xbox, and it looks fine on Xbox (maybe not as good as computer, but good enough).
Now, on equal terms, what's better: Half-Life on Playstation 2 or Halo on PC? (since we all like using a games secondary system...)
I'm one of the FEW that really loved half-life singleplayer. Halo was a one-night-stand seriously.I had more FUN and more TIME with even BASIC half-life, don't get me started on the hundred of mods.
HL singleplayer, dull? Welcome to 5years back then buddy. I bet they had the tools to make it better and the technology. I even played in software mod and still liked it!

I can't help but love this... it's the classic 'eye candy versus substance' debate.
Sure HALO looks pretty. You can blow up jeeps and watch them end-over-end. Stick plasma grenades to people and watch them run around screaming. Shoot at Covenant troops who'll just stand there slack-jawed as their partners fall all around them, on the HARDEST (Legendary) difficulty level (but only if you kill each of them in one shot!). It dead-ends there. The level design is uninspired after the.. maybe fifth or sixth level. Turns trite and rehashed, literally cut/paste for the last half of the damn game. They ran out of ideas, so they threw the 'Library' slog at you to eat time and make the game seem longer, when they were already <b>tapped out</b>.
Half-Life. Doesn't look as pretty, but tells a far more compelling story, where you can actually see the consequences of your actions. Hell, I was incredibly confused the first time I was sniping Grunts, all but one disappeared, and I heard 'FIRE IN THE HOLE!' and had a grenade land in front of me in the pipe. I just kind of... gaped at it for about five seconds, until it went off. I was STUNNED that could happen. That even though I was hiding, they remembered where I was after getting out of line-of-sight. And it only got better. Now. Add in mods. It's a BIG factor to consider, and one of the main reasons why it can put up a strong fight against <b>visually</b>-superior current-day contemporaries. It's extensible. It's replayable. It never really gets 'old', as there's always something new to install and give a whirl.
My vote is solidly with Gordon. Along the lines of an earlier comment... Master Chief is a pansy. And the way his followers had to cheat to overcome those who prefer HL? Pathetic.
1) this is between HALO FOR XBOX and HALF LIFE FOR PC AND ITS MODS (proof: <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->2001 (Xbox)<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->, <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->You can download literally thousands of new maps and modifications for Half-Life. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->)
2) This is a contest, aka it has to be unbiased. -in 1998 half-life for pc revolutionalized the gaming world (when games like crash bandicoot 3 were coming out, roflmao) -in 2001 halo was something cool but nothing special, bf1942 had better vehicles, just people who cant handle or afford pcs would play it on their consoles with crappy controllers and small tvs.
3) Multiplayer half-life was fun! and still is obviously, otherwise what the hell are you doing here. Multiplayer for halo is shite, (i play it on 8 player lans with 2 large tvs), you have to get up close to the tv to see anything in the distance. Killing is easier with the stupid autoaim, its quite dissapointing they use autoaim instead of better controllers.
however this may also be biased towards half life, as its on pc.. the internet, whereas some xboxers wont have pcs.
all in all half life was a much better game in its time, it made a huge impact on the gaming world, kind of like the movie titanic -- where halo is just another one bites the dust... like a jaws movie

If you're going to compare half-life and halo by "impressiveness at the time it was released," half-life takes the cake. I mean, up until that point in 3d shooters, we had quake2. I mean come on. Look at quake2. The badies were no better than quake/doom monsters, and I'm pretty sure if they had two attacks, it was entirely random which one they'd use on you.
When half-life was introduced, IT HAD A STORYLINE! Imagine! OMG! Doesn't seem like a big whoop now, but quake2's storyline was about marines coming to destroy the Strogg homeworld, and you are stranded.
Half-life's storyline included an "accident" gone wrong (later hinted that it perhaps was no accident), the invasion of the grunts who you thought were there to help you, the slow evolution of headcrab zombies, the question of 'who is g-man?', the fight with the 3-headed monster, the launching of the satellite in orbit, the lambda complex, and finally xen. These were subplots, yes subplots! When games didn't even have storylines, this one had subplots.
This sure as hell impresses me more than Halo's storyline. It wasn't even clear to me what the storyline was. It wasn't made so clear, at least to me, what the purpose of the halo was.

Not any more, as Halo just lost. The polls are closed, as of 20 minutes ago, and Half-Life wins. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Next up, SMB3 vs DooM, and Half-Life vs Diablo II. SMB3 is leading by a slim margin, and Half-Life has almost double-timed Diablo 2 already.
Personally, I'm hoping that HL can go all the way. Add another medal to the time-tested game, so that our loyalty will be shown when HL2 comes out and blows the rest away. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Halo multiplayer bored after 4 weeks.
HL multiplayer still playing 5 years later.
