I voted for Half-Life.

I remember playing it for the first time. The only other PC Game I owned was Mad Dog McCree (the worst game you will ever find for DOS, I guarantee.)

I was so enthralled by the movie-like opening, I didn't even touch the mouse, then half-way through the ride I accidentally slipped and hit the mouse and saw that I was in a tram, that I made footstep sounds when I walked, that I WAS this guy in this tram. That was it for me. I had a game-gasm right there on the spot.

The graphics were amazing even on my crappy on-board graphics driver, and compared to Mad Dog. I beat the game maybe 5 times, then got WorldCraft and started making box maps with ammo and Gargantua's strewn about. I was so amazed that a moron like myself could make hiw own map. It didn't matter that it sucked and was boxy, I was just wow'd by the fact that I had made it and it looked good.

It was at this time that I acquired my Geforce 2 MMX. Immediately I loaded HL up again (still one of the few games I owned on PC, I was a PSX-aholic back then. ) and I was so amazed that I played it (kid-you-not) three times through that night (by the time I was done it was no longer night though, lmao.)

I love HL SP to this day, it is THE BEST game I have ever played. Period.

So immersive and yet action-packed, mysterious and in-your-face, Half-Life has it all. Halo... I just never got into.

But let's evaluate this for a minute. I think Halo could have owned Half-Life. But one simple little word killed them. Deadline. Half-Life was VALVe's first game (I think so anyway, someone correct me if I'm wrong.) they had no deadline, they could go at it on their own time, whenever they wanted and make it the best game it could ever possibly be. Halo had Microsoft pushing them and rushing them forward. It's an OK game but I agree the levels are very cut 'n paste and the AI could have been better. Who knows how it would have turned out without any deadlines.

That's why I don't want to, as a fan, rush VALVe to release HL2. Why? Waiting will make it a better game while demanding it will make it a rushed game. I like the former over the latter.

P.S. Long-winded rambling...

Hmm... if it comes to Doom vs HL, I think HL will win, but HL vs SMB3? No clue...

Gee I dunno, from what it sounds like in your post you haven't played many. Hell, The Underdogs actually gave it a decent review and rating (~7.5), so I'm sure I could find a game that was worse...

Yep, I only had to hit the random button 2 times to come up with this: The Notable Phantom, 5.9

granted it was an education game so I hit random a few more times and got this: The Never Ending Story II, 4.7

Edit: Ah ****, forgot about that abandonware stuff... Gimme a minute to clean this up.
Edit: ok, done. You'll have to go there yourself to read the reviews.

People who diss hl sp are the ones who joined up in computer gaming 2001. There were alot of nicer games around and when they tried hl they were like "omg this game is teh sukc"

I'm fairly sure there was some kind of sequel made for Mad Dog McCree, and it got a sub-10% score from PC Gamer. My memory's a bit hazy though.

I'd say SMB3 definately wins over doom.
Think of it this way. Would you pick doom or half-life? The obvious quantitative answer is half-life. When you ask would you pick Half-life or SMB3 its not as clearcut. Therefore I say you should definately pick SMB3.

actually nomble, I started playing games on the PC around 1992 - 1993 (if you don't count the commodre, spectrum and amiga as 'computers' that is =3 ).
It's been so long since I first played half-life I've actually forgotten what it felt like; most of my 'blah blah boring' stuff about HL is more based off the more recent times I played... maybe I was all 'omg!!! I killed the scientists food in the microwave!!!' and stuff that very very first time but it's just a hazy memory =P

The one thing I do remember was thinking it was cool that I got to do stuff in the experiment at the start and that there was a nice sorta peacetime where you didn't just go senselessly killing from the start like in most games at the time ^^

I also remember the factory part in xen where they pump out the alien grunts in casks being kinda freaky for some reason ~blink~

Ummm... No. I started with Doom 2 at a friend's house and my first true PC first person shooter was Half-Life, so forget what you just said.
