First off- Does anyone remember the fact that EVERY LAST ONE OF YOU thought Call of Duty was the same kind of thing? "Oh man, not another WW2 game." everyone said.
Then you played it.
I remember telling every one of you, stop putting that against it, its still a damned good game.
Then you all played it.
This game here is hoping to do much of the same. I myself encourage the WW2 genre, IF THE GAME IS STILL GOOD. I mean, if the game is good, what time does it need to be placed in? It'll still be damned good.
Just remember Call of Duty. And, oh yeah- also remember, you shouldn't like any Vietnam games either if you don't like WW2 games.

The only one level that was an exception was the first Stalingrad level. Aside from that one little 20 minute opening sequence... the entire game was a joke. AI was dumber then a box of rocks, the maps were linear and cliche, every 'sequence' has been done before ("OHNOES! A TANK! MAIN CHARACTER, GET THE <Insert anti-tank weapon for axis or allies here> AND SHOOT IT!" You realize how many times that's been done before? "OHNOES! A SNIPER IN THE TOWER! HELP ME MAIN CHARACTER!") and the missions overall were a joke. The easiest missions I played were the British missions (except for that bridge one, that was hard because your teammates are so god damn dumb. "PROTECT THE GUY WHOS RUNNING OFF FACEFIRST INTO NAZIS WITH A PISTOL!!!") because you could just exploit the flaws in the AI even if you wern't trying.
The game was and still is overhyped trash.
For the note: Vietnam games introduce about a billion things WW2 didn't have. Most notable is the entire 'Oh look I actually have tools I can use to get things done tactically instead of not being able to do anything but either run face-first at them shooting or snipe them.'
Also there's been more WW2 games then I care to count. I can think of about 8 FPS alone off the top of my head, that doesn't count the RTS games or the Flight Sims either. I can only think of one other Vietnam game and it was trash, made about 4 years ago.
Cool grass, wonder if they can bring the game along with it though.
WW2 games were <i>getting</i> stale quite some time ago. They're good and spoiled now. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Soylent: Poor you.
EEK: As someone said in another thread- what the heck are you? What kind of game DO you like? You seem to insult everything a LOT.
Also- bad AI? Howso? I don't see how CoD had bad A.I. at all. In fact, I'd say its damned good compared to other big-name games.
I can understand the linearity, but thats the only way scripted sequences can work.
Also, let me ask- how many times have you planted the signal to let your paratrooper buddies come down all around you, while your alone on D-Day night. How many times has the building's next to you keep getting bombed while your fighting, just trying to survive? How many times have you gone through the sewers, and in some places where the top of the sewers is cracked due to the cold, you can see even more of the enemy running over as your fighting them there. How many times have you dearly fought to the top of the Reichstag, only to wave your nation's flag in a pride never felt before? There are COUNTLESS other sequences in CoD I can name off, all of which are nothing short of unique, and amazing.
If you don't like WW2 games, fine. I don't like puzzle games, myself(or puzzles). But there is a old rule a lot of us like: If you don't like something at all, and are just gonna bash it, its a pretty bad damned idea to come in saying "OMG IT SUCKS!".
I wouldn't say Call of Duty was a bad game, but there've been too many WWII shooters out, and Europe is starting to get a bit boring.
I thought the AI was pretty retarded. It seemed to me that they didn't really think for themselves, but that the level editors scripted in what they were supposed to do. Same for the enemies. I mean AI as in unscripted combat logic, like in HALO (for the most part).
The thing that Call of Duty did get right was the engine. That is one nice, efficient engine (if a little outdated). That game ran smooth as a **** when I got my hands on it. Smoother than Natural-Selection.
like that time where you had to run across a white field and assault that 3 story building that you would have to defend later on. instead of the ai taking shots around the corner or doing it with agility, they just stand in the mg fire for about 5 seconds at a time.
The grass looks nice. The tree's leafs in the background could use some work, though.

It does, truly. Though, it doesn't have bump mapping as of yet, and I doubt it will- their spending a lot of resources on getting plenty of polies in for said grass/trees&such.
Chrono does have a point, although I hated the entire Russian campain. No memorable parts there. Oh except the numerous MG42 they put in it. "Oh your turning a corner? MG42 time!" I was getting so frustrated that I turned it off. I mean everyone accuses the British Chapter being the most MOHAA but really it was the Russian Campain that was the most MOHAA. By the fact that whenever you met someone they died and left you on your own for another hour. And do not get me started on Pavlov. Crappest mission ever.
However the most memorable bits come from the British Campain. Pegasus Bridge ruled and I really enjoyed the dam assault (Unlike a lot of people it seemed) And then of course fighting off Stuka's with the flak gun.
The British Campain won hands down.
And the AI wasn't that good. I can't count the times the enemy just ran into my MG42 or when my squadmates ran blindly into a group of Axis that could clearly be seen.
EEK: As someone said in another thread- what the heck are you? What kind of game DO you like? You seem to insult everything a LOT. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> What I like and what I don't has absolutely no bearing on this thread. I have very picky tastes and I usually see all the **** in something others (Cough cough) are too freaking blind to see for themselves. WW2 games are boring and shallow, and appeal to boring shallow people.
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Also- bad AI? Howso? I don't see how CoD had bad A.I. at all. In fact, I'd say its damned good compared to other big-name games.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> I played a scenario (Was part of the American campaign, where you advance on a wall and several buddies take cover behind debris) nearly 15 times and watched what happened.
Every time I played it, the same units took up the same positions and did the same thing (Hide and cower, spray gunfire and peek out). It was VERY heavilly scripted. Most likely, the map makers plop waypoints around the map, and designate them to one NPC each. As they come near, they go to that waypoint. Very cheap and hacky.
Secondly, when I gunned an (MG-44?) I'd just point it at a tree or wall and hold fire, then come back in a little bit. When I did there'd be a perfect line of enemies who just wandered into my gunfire like good little soldiers, one by one, and got chewed up. The most effective tactic was to just stand next to a corner and gun them down as they came around.
Thirdly, I was told on the British missions to 'GET OVER THERE WITH THAT BAR AND SUPRESS THAT BUNKER!'. So, like a good little soldier (who knows exactly what supressive fire is) I hid behind a sandbag and started firing on the bunker. Then I watched as my idiot 'allies' wandered two feet in front of the bunker and got gunned down by the germans on the MGs in there. Why? Because the AI takes into NO ACCOUNT if they're being fired on. A halfway decent AI- hell a halfway decent SCRIPTING JOB should've had the germans hiding from my spraying with the BAR and attack when I stopped. I ended up playing that several times becaues I just had to snipe them with the BAR to 'supress' it.
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->I can understand the linearity, but thats the only way scripted sequences can work.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> A scripted AI and environment doesn't mean a level can only have one way to get through it, and only one way to do the objectives. Behind red door is blue key, etc.'
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Also, let me ask- how many times have you planted the signal to let your paratrooper buddies come down all around you, while your alone on D-Day night.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> I'm going to ignore your referrences to WW2, since 'D-day night' has little to do with the actual game. So 'How many times have you planted the signal to let your paratrooper buddies come down all around you?' Well let's see... I'm all alone. Stranded. Scared (oh that's right COD didn't have me scared). Scared out of my MIND! I needed to let my buddies know where I was. I needed to call them in.
The game? The very first level of AVP2. Hmm...
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->How many times has the building's next to you keep getting bombed while your fighting, just trying to survive? It was a 10 second moment at the end of the last mission. That's like saying Half-Life is fun soley because of the moment you push the crystal into the anti-mass spectrometer. It isn't.

WW2 games were <i>getting</i> stale quite some time ago. They're good and spoiled now. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Possibly, or it could be a pixel shader effect, in which case only the high-end users will see it.
I remember telling every one of you, stop putting that against it, its still a damned good game.
Then you all played it.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
...Except I didn't play it...
The grass looks nice. The tree's leafs in the background could use some work, though.

But I agree with you on the puzzle bit...

What I like and what I don't has absolutely no bearing on this thread. I have very picky tastes and I usually see all the **** in something others (Cough cough) are too freaking blind to see for themselves. WW2 games are boring and shallow, and appeal to boring shallow people.

I played a scenario (Was part of the American campaign, where you advance on a wall and several buddies take cover behind debris) nearly 15 times and watched what happened.

A scripted AI and environment doesn't mean a level can only have one way to get through it, and only one way to do the objectives. The COD levels were like playing Doom- hell scratch that. Doom at least made me wander around halls looking for keys. COD is just 'run down hall, get red key, 50 feet away is red door. Behind red door is blue key, etc.'
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Also, let me ask- how many times have you planted the signal to let your paratrooper buddies come down all around you, while your alone on D-Day night.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I'm going to ignore your referrences to WW2, since 'D-day night' has little to do with the actual game.
How many times has a scripted repetative (and annoying) explosion gone off while I'm killing a horde of morons that just stand around while I blow them and their buddies away with precision and skilless accuracy of a KAR? As for the 'running enemies overhead', you realize a sequence just like that happens in Half-Life? I'd hardly consider either of those 'unique' scenarios anymore.
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->How many times have you dearly fought to the top of the Reichstag, only to wave your nation's flag in a pride never felt before?<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I won't lie and say that this part wasn't pretty cool. I wanted to get up there. But it's probably the only shining moment (maybe the second being the Stalingrad landing) in this game, and it certainly wasn't impressive enough to make me love, or even care much for this game. It was a 10 second moment at the end of the last mission. That's like saying Half-Life is fun soley because of the moment you push the crystal into the anti-mass spectrometer. It isn't.
Out of curiousity, did you like AvP2?
