It would probably be the best if you could find a picture of bowser from SM64. Cause that's a low poly bowser. The one from SSBM will not be low polly...

Refrencing that picture you pulled up, that whole "lips" bit is supposed to look more like a snout....
Other then that, my only other problem is how it looks in general (arms and everything) but it might jsut be the fact that it's not hunched over at all, nor does it have knees bent or arms bent or anything. It's standing like a human, lol... So I am hoping that the pose is what is making it look so scrawny and non-bowserlike in my eyes...
Oh, and notice in the two pictures, he's got that bump between his eyebrows... and the eyebrows are very prominent. It's one of the major things that sets him apart from lowly koopas...
edit3: Last thing. In the picture you posted, he seems to be fatter down closer to his legs, which may also be what makes him look so large and such...

it should be more orangey not yellowish, as well arms should be shorter, and the lip should be larger. Legs could stand some more beef too. otherwise it's nice. looks like a b* to animate though
dunno if you can do this, but i think his head needs to be a bit higher (juding from the second ref pic) and he needs more "neck fat" or a "taller head" or something, cause it just looks funny, like he is sticking his neck out, rather than standing normally.

yeah, thats why I suggested you remove the back spike, as that's about where the back of his head would be. Just remove the spike, round the top of the shell to the back of his neck, move his head up and make it a bit fatter around the chin area (more neck fat) and then make his chest less flat. Should look much better then.

heres another idea for the mc, why not just use that spring jump thing(trampoline). its been used in all of super mario bros.(1-3,world,rpg) to jump farther. In RPG its used like a teleporter back to start dealio thingy.
