I noticed hera also has a reddish looking surface...so perhaps it is in a system similar to hera?

From the looks of the layout image, it's all this orange colour. Some contrast in colours would be cool. Right now, it looks like the whole thing is made from clay and looks a bit bland.

Tequila, I love Dark Place.

Do you want to test this map on a server ?

I have a (french) server with official and some customs maps, and i would be really enjoying if i could test ns_marineris with 12 players !
I love this ambience, very NS. It has a chance to become an official map !
And the color, I like as they are. It creates a particular atmosphere, between Dune and Total Recall. But we must test in game to view if it's playable

If you're interested => PM

EDIT : on this screen :

the textures seem to be very "unaligned" on the pipe

Okay, I added some cold white spot lights in some areas and toned down the orange glow, while still trying to keep the atmosphere. I'll update the pictures sometime soon and I will be releasing a beta this weekend.

wOw...
I mean... WoW!
it looks great! I like the lightning. although its not a question f "do you like it?", more like "If I watch it all the time a match takes, my eyes start burning..."
maybe some few additional contrast lights, maybe some bright spots (BRIGHT AS HEAVEN!!!) tha arent "effected" by the red dust.

but the worst thing of this map:
>>> NO DOWNLOADLINK!!! <<<

ok, I have just hosted this map for a playtest - after a quick review I'd have to say it looks better in game than with the screen shots. Quite dark and moody, perhaps a little too dark for some tastes but I like it like that.

It was only one game but there is a serious bug with some double ladders near the top right hive. Only a skulk can climb them everything else gets hurled away with such force it can actually be killed by the fall!

The server is set to redrect people who conect to a download url so you get a nice fast download of the map. Take a look in the sig to see if its running now...

and the best thing:
the texture-set is the same used on eclipse veil and hera.
but THIS map looks really cool! (no offence to other mappers ) great "alternate" use of textures, impressive. and the adjusted lightning sounds/looks fitting.

btw: this "soundtrack" should be connected to this map, it sounds great. feel kinda lost when walking through calm areas. SUSPICIOUS calm areas the guy who created this should think about creating a bunch of soundtracks COULD be added to the music folder.

Nice one. Although i still think you should try some cold blue highlights in the map .

I played around with the map a bit yesterday, and it looks amazing. Great atmosphere, one thing I noticed that might be bothersome to marines is the bottom left hive (sorry don't remember name, played yesterday ). The one with the nice big gap on it. It just seems that hive is very small, especially since you can only get up one side of that ledge and in the middle you have the gap of doom

Also the area leading to central tunnels, that fall is quite big, meaning marines have to use the ladder. I think I'm probably the only one bothered by it, since an elevator would look fugly there

Otherwise good job, be interesting to play a couple of good games on this map to see how it plays out.

Also I do agree with one comment in thsi thread, there is a bit to much red/orange. I don't mind it, but maybe even if you change the console screens in certain areas to a green, to give it a more lived in atmosphere. I guess it's more of a realism call then anything else. I mean how much red can people look at.

d....d.... did I just read "download"?

YYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEESSSS!!!!!!

edit:
two things I am missing:

1. environment sounds, there are as important as good lightning
2. the "dusty" feel, maybe you could add some sprites to do the job, they work wonders...
• DerangedDeranged Join Date: 2004-04-07 Member: 27774Members
unslord you might want to take a look at that bottom left hive agin. Marines if they have jp can setup a tf on the pillars on the top and basically lock down that hive without a problem. I think it's kind of a **** exploit that could be used. If you don't understand let me know I'll take a screenshot..
