It's actually explorer.exe doing this? Because "System Idle Process" runs at 99% usually with no problems on my system... are you seeing troubles in performance or is it just concerning you that it "says" it's using loads of CPU power?

pfft, explorer.exe hangs on a normal system every now and then, doesn't have to do with viruses. Just "End Process" and start it again, no harm done.

When "System Idle Process" says it's 'using' 99% of the CPU, that means 99% of the CPU power is not being used.

What AntiViruses have you checked with? Have they been updated? This is, after all, pretty common of viruses and there is a possibility that you got the virus again after a format. Also, make sure you have the latest Windows updates.

How many RAM sticks do you have?

If you have 2, try unplugging one, and load it. If it still has the high resource use, try with the other RAM stick.

And if it is still stuck at high resources consumption, could be the disk.
If it does return to normal though, your RAM stick is baaaad.

Well.. as to the problems I have had with norton...

1) Runs slowly for an anti-virus software
2) Does not pick up on all the virus/spy ware/malware
3) I have had it cause random deletion of windows reg keys ( I don't know why)
4) See 1-3 repeated about seven times

:-)

Avg or trend micro for virus scan.. use AVG if you can't get online, or trend-micros if you can. As for the Ad-aware and Spy bot.. both are very good, together they pwn. :-)

Other then that Norton also tends to have a nasty habit of not liking the spyware dectotors.. aka Ad-aware/spy bot. Althought it could just have been the ME computer I was working on... not sure on that one.

norton got no anti spyware it got anti virus
and it found it for me

as i belive as u said it delete randomly win reg files
mabey they were viruses u dled?!
• CyndaneCyndane Join Date: 2003-11-15 Member: 22913Members
Somehow I do not think that windows system reg files are virii.. :-)

Anyway.. since Norton doesn't detect spy-ware/malware.. I can see why I prefer my PC-Cillin to that :-)

Hahahahaha

A little rule of thumb for you. Just because something is more expensive, doesn't mean it does the job any better.

Norton is just a bloated piece o' crap.

Sounds like spyware to me.

Solutions:

-Download Ad-aware 6.0 build 181 and update it, then scan your pc.

- Download Spybot S&D 1.3 , and follow the nice wizard.

- If you don't have a good virusscanner already:

Download :AVG
Its free, and as far as I know it is a very good Virusscanner.

If none of this might help (I doubt it), you should make a backup of important files and just reinstall your pc, nice and clean.
