Well, this actually has nothing to do with the afforementioned problem. My windows explorer uses a proper amount of system resources, but it does fit under the title of "Explorer.exe go crazy"...and rather than start a new thread -which, at the moment, would be unreliable - I'd like to seek help here .
For some reason the internet is going extremely slow/not at all in the house today.
One of the main problems seems to be internet explorer (but not completely, since netscape doesn't work properly either [although, that was a version from 2002, with the Netscape Gecko]. The main problem is this, yahoo as an example:
type in the address: www.yahoo.com yahoo comes up, click on mail page error (back on the yahoo page, holding the mouse over the link sprouts a fairly gibberish link below, something like www.yahoo.com/390dfa889fad78afg097ag89fgdfga790af].loginggd=.ffgd790fgdafg90g7afdg07807246=.partner=563fsg..etc [it's not quoted, or a direct example, but it looks much like that]. type www.mail.yahoo.com in the address bar and the SN/password prompt screen comes up, enter the info and press enter, and a similar linked page appears (and something like the above will be in the address bar.
It is very similar with other sites.
In fact, right now, the computer is acting funny with internet explored (as, on the right - with the smilies, I have 3 smilies, a skulk, and the rest are awkward 'link broke' Xs with 'smilie' next to them.
I know it's not spyware, because I've already cleaned that out (although, it might still be, since I don't think it's updating properly).
Could anyone please offer me a solution (that's not sarcastic) that doesn't rely on me downloading a program or updating a program?
This started happening yesterday, I'm thinking it might be caused by a windows update, but I can't uninstall them, because I'm not sure which one was last.
...Also of note: It's not the internet itself, because I can play games pretty much okay.
...heh, please help me .
[and in fact, upon the first attempt at posting this I get an error]
[edit]I apologize, double post...just shows you how wonky my browser is at the moment, because this has never happened before (well, from being my [browser's] fault, anyway).
I know my above post says I tried with a failed attempt, but, believe me, there was more than one...and only a double post, so - any conclusions from that can be swept away.
Okay, this is the plan, then:

Download ZoneAlarm, burn it to a CD or put it on a second hard drive.

Format your hard drive

Reinstall Windows

Install ZoneAlarm

Update it IMMEDIATELY. Get all of the latest updates.

Install a better AntiVirus. (There is a free version of AVG AntiVirus.)

That should fix your problems. I wouldn't be surprised if Norton was causing the problem, either.

I don't know if any of those were directed at me, but a firewalls not going to help me. The easiest way to describe it: junk code is being put in my links and addresses (in fact, I just put in http://192.168.0.1, and it poped http:///%20192.168.0.1 when I pressed enter).
[perhaps someone knows of a way to perfectly reinstall internet explorer on a windows machine (although, it's probably something deeper, like in the registry, since it happens for netscape too).
...my router is either messed up and changing my addresses (doubt it), or there some error in internet explorer that's messing with addresses (that doesn't go away when it's reinstalled).
...There are no viruses on my machine. There is no spyware/adware/blankityblankware on my machine.
It happens on both computers on my tiny...two computer network. And I'm still looking for help.
UltimaGecko: Try plugging a computer directly in to the modem. (No router) If it works when you do that, reset your router to its factory default settings and reconfigure it, then try again.
I have had this problem before. In fact i just had it a few moments ago. However, it only occures when i try to delete a certain file. When i attempt to do so, it tells me i can not delete it because it is in use or some other such crap that isn't true. You click ok and suddenly explorer uses 99% cpu. well crap. ctrl-alt-delete - end process explorer, new process explorer, everything works normally, don't try to delete that file again.
that doesn't really help you i guess, but you might want to see if there is a certain thing you do when your cpu usage rockets.

Dyslexia isn't an excuse, either. My brother is dyslexic. So is my friend. They both type properly. All you really have to do is type as well as you can and run it through a spell-checker.
Anyway, I'll stop straying from the topic now. Let us know how the format goes.
Well, it's likely that all signs point to 'Bad sectors on harddrive'
I had that problem, and a few more with my old, defective HDD.
And if it's a newly bought HDD, it points even more towards it. LOL I remember the time when my brother blames me when his 120GB HDD started getting clogged with bad sectors. Turned out it was defective.
