(as i thought it up while typing version) This would stay true to the "gritty" feeling of the game, but still accomplish what you want, to some extent.
(layman's version) This would be an idea that would work going by the manual, and thus is (hopefully) more likely to be implemented.

It's professional stuff. I read the whole story (don't laugh ), it seemed really cool. I think, actually, the maps clinched it for me... I don't recall which ones they were but some of them made me think I was looking at a screenshot from Halo or AvP! Only reinforcing my interest in the mod was Commander mode (Starcraft for HL?! WTH?! and the alien mode (pretty cool to be hanging off of walls and things.)

Replies: 9 Views: 159 Hey, I was reading that "New Gameplay idea" thread and it kind of struck me that there should be more than 1 type of marine. I'm not entirely sure that NS doesn't have different Marine types, but hear me out.
Maybe there ought be a type of marine who specializes in technical/mechanical work, ie building turrets and things. This idea comes from the game Chaos Gate, if you know that game, well whatever. So if a techmarine came up to a turret in progress and helped build it, it would complete faster. Also, if a map had a certain objective (ie start a self-destruct sequence on board a ship) the techmarine would be able to do this faster than normal marines. The techmarine would not have as good weapons as normal marines so he woud require cover, obviously.

My first post is so friggin long for some reason........and after reading several of my first posts, I want to cry with how retarded I sounded, and that was just a couple years ago.
Posted in a topic in the Kharaa Stat. forum regarding best comebacks ever or something. Anyway, we atarted in the ventilation hive, which put us in a reletively bad position off the bat, and to make matters worse, right after I finished evolving into a gorge(I was the first gorge) I see the blue radar rings of doom eminating from below our hive. I tell everyone this, and then MonseiurEvil (who was there) starts cackling into his mike, and he has a really weird laugh. for some reason resources didn't want to come to me, and it took me what seemed liek forever to get the first DC up. Needles to say, my next objective was to build the resource tower in the south loop. I yelled that I needed another gorge to help me with my gorgeing, and MonseiurEvil piped in saying he would. Unluckily, right after he said that, a marine rushes into the south loop, catches me distracted by resource watching, and opens up on me. I respawned and immediately went gorge again. So now we have 2 gorges, me and MonseiurEvil, he's saving up for the Comp Control hive oir something so I go for the resources in teh south loop again, once again a lone marine manages to kill me, this time with a knife, even though I was sure I hit him enough to have killed him. This happened a few more times until I didn't have the resources to go gorge again, so some other guy does(I can't remember his name, only that it was two words, both of which began with "|2"). 2 DCs and a lot of skulk heroics later, we have managed to drive them out of the Comp Control hive(I'm still not sure how we got through what I must say was some masterfull turret placement), and now we have 2nd hive is about 80% of the way done. Suddenly I hear MonseuirEvil calling for a bodygaurd, I rush to the CC hive, where he has holed himself up in a hodge-podge of Offensive and Defensive towers, but on the way I'm taken out by some camping marine with newly-aquired bullet upgrades. I'm waiting to spawn back in, when both off teh hives are hit by a double pronged 'nade assualt by the marines, which was devastating to both our hives. So now we are with no hive, and only 3 people alive(one skulk, and two gorges[MonseuirEvil and |2 boy]). The alien team has all but given up. There are about three marines attacking MonseuirEvil's O/D tower setup with nade launchers, and we can see him dieing by the second(for some reason our other gorge and skulk at the maintenence hive are going unbothered). After about 30-odd seconds off pounding MonseuirEvil with nades, the marine assualt has lost most of it's steam from either losing it's ammo or being killed by O towers. Suddenly, a miracle! The Comp Core hive takes shape, and the hope of a comeback rises in my alien brethren(by this time the maintenence hive was almost half done, without being bothered. Go figure.) As soon as the maintenence hive comes up, you can feel that a great comeback is about to take place. I was the first to spawn back in by way of this maracle hive, and I immediately rushed to the CC hive to provide MonseuirEvil with moral support, and to use the vent system in the ceiling to get to a lighty defended marine resource tower I had noticed earlier, when a new assault is launched by the marines on the CC hive, this time utilizing heavy armor! The CC hive dies in short order, and we're back to square one. Thanks to some good old-fashioned marine incompitence the marines that are attacking the hive have nothing to fall back to, so when the full rath of the newly spawned kharra crashes upon them, they fall with little trouble. A good few minutes later, the CC hive is going back up again, this time with a full cadre of skulks defending it from our Heavily Armored opponents. Cut to: the CC hive has just come up, thanks to a good amount of luck, I got a reletively large resource glut right after my resource max went up from 33 to 66. I am at about 42 recources when I see that the Maintenence hive is blinking red. I immediately jump out of the vent I had been hiding in to regenerate and gather my resources, I go to evolve, and right as my mouse button is over the words "advanced evolutions" the maintenance hive goes dark. I scream "NOOOOOOOOOOO" into my headset, and rush back to the maintenence hive to take care of the marines. After another brilliant display of skulkery, the marines are driven back. Then, determined to never let that happen again, the gorge on the scene immediately whiped up another hive, and set up some defences, which until this time had been noticeably lacking at that particular hive. Needless to say, it happened again anyway. In fact, both of the hives went down once more each(not at the same time though), and the maint. hive came within inches of being seiged(thanks again to the skulks), but luckily, when they both came back up the next time, the marins were unable to retaliate, thanks mostly to the fact that a very strong skulk offense(which means we had a weak defense) had taken down nearly all but two of the marine RTs, and thanks to some marine clulessness, they had forgotten(?) to put them back up. Then came the fades. Also, at that time we discovered that the marine base was pitifully defended, in fact, if you took a phase gate there, you could not be targeted by any sentry turrets. Finally, the marine base fell(AKA all the marines f4ed out of the game like little wimps) within minutes(I however, was unfortunately far away from the at the eclipse command hive, taking down their mini-base there. In game when I have it theres a flash effect when firing, but when someone else fires it the gun only spits the bullets, but theres no muzzle flash effect visable for me. On all other guns I have this effect, it's just this gun. How can I fix that or is there a fixed version out there if someone else has his bug?

The Kharaa would be temporarily semi-uncloaked as the sudden application of light would change the look of the surroundings, but this would be minor as the Kharaa would just "upload" the new data needed to recloak itself, but the shadow would protrude beyond it, so it couldnt block that, giving you the location of the Kharaa. This means that except for the first little bit that you shine the light somewhere, all you would see is a partial shadow (the Kharaa would be smart enough (at higher cloak levels maybe) to not plaster the image of its shadow on itself.)
(as i thought it up while typing version) This would stay true to the "gritty" feeling of the game, but still accomplish what you want, to some extent.
(layman's version) This would be an idea that would work going by the manual, and thus is (hopefully) more likely to be implemented.

i'm Windelkron as you can tell from my name. I heard about NS from Planet HalfLife... I clicked expecting some cheap mod but what I found... damn! It's professional stuff. I read the whole story (don't laugh ), it seemed really cool. I think, actually, the maps clinched it for me... I don't recall which ones they were but some of them made me think I was looking at a screenshot from Halo or AvP! Only reinforcing my interest in the mod was Commander mode (Starcraft for HL?! WTH?! and the alien mode (pretty cool to be hanging off of walls and things.)
In fact, I could so hardly believe that it was HL I was looking at, I was wondering why PHL would put a non-HL project as a news item! Then I found to my amazement it <b>was </b>HL. GJ NS team!!!<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Views: 159 Hey, I was reading that "New Gameplay idea" thread and it kind of struck me that there should be more than 1 type of marine. I'm not entirely sure that NS doesn't have different Marine types, but hear me out.
Maybe there ought be a type of marine who specializes in technical/mechanical work, ie building turrets and things. This idea comes from the game Chaos Gate, if you know that game, well whatever. So if a techmarine came up to a turret in progress and helped build it, it would complete faster. Also, if a map had a certain objective (ie start a self-destruct sequence on board a ship) the techmarine would be able to do this faster than normal marines. The techmarine would not have as good weapons as normal marines so he woud require cover, obviously.
Just a thought. NS might already have something related to this that I don't know about already, but in the case that it doesn't, that's my idea<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Anyway i think we need a sound for the motion upgrade. Like when a aliens near, your visor goes "Enemy Appraching". Ive been in situations where i was looking at all of the other emeny targets (circles) and an enemy came up behind me. A visual icon or something would be good to if you didnt like the sound idea.

I have a little problem - i worked about 4 hours on my welder model and I KNOW its so cool that
about 20% at least of the ns players will want it. I'm not posting images at this point, because i dont want to ruin the surprise. And now to my problem - i worked about it for at least 4 hours, i even skinned it, but i dont know how to animate it with bones, i barely know how to attach the bones.. can some1 plz, but its important to me so plz tell me how he first learned to animate? or best will be if u can give me a tutorial for animating trust me, this model ownz ! (btw i use milkshape).

Anyway, we atarted in the ventilation hive, which put us in a reletively bad position off the bat, and to make matters worse, right after I finished evolving into a gorge(I was the first gorge) I see the blue radar rings of doom eminating from below our hive. I tell everyone this, and then MonseiurEvil (who was there) starts cackling into his mike, and he has a really weird laugh. for some reason resources didn't want to come to me, and it took me what seemed liek forever to get the first DC up. Needles to say, my next objective was to build the resource tower in the south loop. I yelled that I needed another gorge to help me with my gorgeing, and MonseiurEvil piped in saying he would. Unluckily, right after he said that, a marine rushes into the south loop, catches me distracted by resource watching, and opens up on me. I respawned and immediately went gorge again. So now we have 2 gorges, me and MonseiurEvil, he's saving up for the Comp Control hive oir something so I go for the resources in teh south loop again, once again a lone marine manages to kill me, this time with a knife, even though I was sure I hit him enough to have killed him. This happened a few more times until I didn't have the resources to go gorge again, so some other guy does(I can't remember his name, only that it was two words, both of which began with "|2"). 2 DCs and a lot of skulk heroics later, we have managed to drive them out of the Comp Control hive(I'm still not sure how we got through what I must say was some masterfull turret placement), and now we have 2nd hive is about 80% of the way done. Suddenly I hear MonseuirEvil calling for a bodygaurd, I rush to the CC hive, where he has holed himself up in a hodge-podge of Offensive and Defensive towers, but on the way I'm taken out by some camping marine with newly-aquired bullet upgrades. I'm waiting to spawn back in, when both off teh hives are hit by a double pronged 'nade assualt by the marines, which was devastating to both our hives. So now we are with no hive, and only 3 people alive(one skulk, and two gorges[MonseuirEvil and |2 boy]). The alien team has all but given up.
There are about three marines attacking MonseuirEvil's O/D tower setup with nade launchers, and we can see him dieing by the second(for some reason our other gorge and skulk at the maintenence hive are going unbothered). After about 30-odd seconds off pounding MonseuirEvil with nades, the marine assualt has lost most of it's steam from either losing it's ammo or being killed by O towers. Suddenly, a miracle! The Comp Core hive takes shape, and the hope of a comeback rises in my alien brethren(by this time the maintenence hive was almost half done, without being bothered. Go figure.) As soon as the maintenence hive comes up, you can feel that a great comeback is about to take place. I was the first to spawn back in by way of this maracle hive, and I immediately rushed to the CC hive to provide MonseuirEvil with moral support, and to use the vent system in the ceiling to get to a lighty defended marine resource tower I had noticed earlier, when a new assault is launched by the marines on the CC hive, this time utilizing heavy armor! The CC hive dies in short order, and we're back to square one. Thanks to some good old-fashioned marine incompitence the marines that are attacking the hive have nothing to fall back to, so when the full rath of the newly spawned kharra crashes upon them, they fall with little trouble. A good few minutes later, the CC hive is going back up again, this time with a full cadre of skulks defending it from our Heavily Armored opponents. Cut to: the CC hive has just come up, thanks to a good amount of luck, I got a reletively large resource glut right after my resource max went up from 33 to 66. I am at about 42 recources when I see that the Maintenence hive is blinking red. I immediately jump out of the vent I had been hiding in to regenerate and gather my resources, I go to evolve, and right as my mouse button is over the words "advanced evolutions" the maintenance hive goes dark. I scream "NOOOOOOOOOOO" into my headset, and rush back to the maintenence hive to take care of the marines.
After another brilliant display of skulkery, the marines are driven back. Then, determined to never let that happen again, the gorge on the scene immediately whiped up another hive, and set up some defences, which until this time had been noticeably lacking at that particular hive. Needless to say, it happened again anyway. In fact, both of the hives went down once more each(not at the same time though), and the maint. hive came within inches of being seiged(thanks again to the skulks), but luckily, when they both came back up the next time, the marins were unable to retaliate, thanks mostly to the fact that a very strong skulk offense(which means we had a weak defense) had taken down nearly all but two of the marine RTs, and thanks to some marine clulessness, they had forgotten(?) to put them back up. Then came the fades. Also, at that time we discovered that the marine base was pitifully defended, in fact, if you took a phase gate there, you could not be targeted by any sentry turrets. Finally, the marine base fell(AKA all the marines f4ed out of the game like little wimps) within minutes(I however, was unfortunately far away from the at the eclipse command hive, taking down their mini-base there. It just bugs me that people keep saying things like "OMG n00b, get out of teh chair."
