Another is to pick a less recognized form. Now, I think cloaked onos is the biggest possible waste of a unit, but on the other hand noone ever looks for a cloaked onos. Ditto the cloaked lerk.
Gorges and skulks are easier to spot, cloaked gorges want to find somewhere they can hide and keep near it. Try lurking near cloaked chambers, for instance. Skulks should stick to ceilings and the dark bits between pipes.
IF you are on the ground, and a marine is coming at you, RUSH HIM. Stationary aliens are easy to spot, if you're moving you've got a better chance and more importantly it means you're attacking him with momentum, not being a sitting duck.
As for "lame".... I think having a script to spot cloakers is about as lame as unskilled as you can get, but nonetheless... cloaking is a handy way for starter players to get over any fear of rushing marines, and also get used to marines walking around unawares while you wait for the next target.
Its also an excellent scouting tool, allowing even the worst skulk to camp in a ceiling corner and holler out to his team exactly whats happening at a chokepoint.
BTW, cloak gorge tip, wait till the rines rush past, then drop three OCs behind them. If they retreat they'll roll right into your trap for several easy kills. Works best if you DON'T cloak the chambers, because if you cloak them then the marines will shoot/knife every corner to find the SCs... and that means they'll find YOU. If you leave them uncloaked then once the marines are dead you can run out and healspray, before retreating to your hideyhole. Evil and fun, and if you get reinforcements you can even go for a quick push to marine base.
If you can show us a scrit to spot cloakers, I'll eat my gorge. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Personally, I can sometimes spot cloakers, but if I'm moving/not looking for them they manage to slip by.

its extremly hard to see them standing still, plain easy when moving or turning
Regardless of what really happens, I believe it's supposed to work this way: When they are moving, they are revealed to the extent of a one chamber level of cloaking(dunno, might be lvl 2) When standing still with lvl 3 cloaking, an alien is supposed to be 100% invisible unless revealed.

Im one of the players that can spot a skulk down the hallway cloaked, but can't see the cloaked skulk right next to him. Sucks to pistol one in a vent, yet I get nubbed by a skulk on the floor moments later.
I've found that the flashlight can spot cloakers. If you know that the aliens are cloaking its often worth it to switch it on and scan around for em. It'll normally spot those guys that like to walk right towards you.

skulk = valuable but good to see when runnign cloacked gorge = phatteh is big but slower. Still a fair shot lerk = hard to spot to my opinion, but it is more dense in wireframe so that helps. fade = hardest to spot. Big to make a wider wireframe but not to big to be that easy to spot onos = total waste of upgrade. Sure, he has a wide wireframe but the damn thing is so big you got to see a wireframe somewhere.
Also I say wireframe cause in cloak the edges of its body are most visible, I do not mean a real wireframe.

Apparently, this doesn't work.
