Old Pc Games!

Make your recommendation here
I'm looking for some old PC games to play. Fairly recent, at least. Between 1998 and 2002. 3D games, preferably. Shooters are a favourite, but I'm not opposed to RPGs. Please refrain from console games, please!

I need some time to just play some games... Where I don't need to worry about having tons of hard drive space, or the latest video card, and where I don't have to spend hours tweaking to get great performance.

Assume that I don't know a thing about old video games, and just make any recommendation and tell me a bit about the game, but be careful not to spoil any of the story, please!

One more preference... I'd like to be able to run the game in windowed mode, so I can keep an eye on other things while I play. Having a single player mode is ideal, but any good multiplayer-only games are welcome, too.

Shogo: Mobile Armor Division - 1998

FPS

Interplay
Monolith
rated M for Mature
Anime (or some such thing)

interesting story, language, rampant violence, and graphics that make HL look good.

the single player missions alternate between 2 "modes", one mode where you ARENT in a giant battle-robot thingy, and the other, where you ARE

it has multiplayer, but i havent tried it (it has built-in mod capabilities, you just need the mods)

if only ever seen this game bundled with Septerra Core, an RPG (which i havent played much, so i cant give any details)

:edit: dunno if it has windowed mode. also, if i think of more, i'll post them

Septerra Core - an interesting RPG. It's much larger/longer than you'd think. Medium/nice graphics - sorta Fallout-ish. My main problem with it? You have to ask 'WTH do I do now' too many times - and have to guess the answer to your own question. Which can take a while.

SWAT 3 - probably the best of those squad-based tactical shooters (Rainbow 6 etc), with a very clever way of controlling your teammates. FPS.
No-one Lives Forever - very good spy-stealth-gadget-spoof sort of a game. FPS
Commandos 2 - if you havne't already playes it, DO. 'nuff said. WWII RTS

I assume you've played the obvious suggestions, like Deus Ex, System Shock 2 (though good luck finding that one), Thief2, etc.

Since we're heading well out of the 1998 - 2002 time range, might I also suggest Star Control II, which is now available here - but for God's sake, you do NOT want to have to voice acting wavs installed...

If you want the original DOS version though, PM me and I'll send it to you.

About X-Com being hard to find... It depends on whether you want a legal version or not...
Speaking of which, I'm not sure if downloading it actually is legal these days. I heard Microprose was disbanded, meaning the rights doesn't technically belong to anyone (unless Microprose was a division of another company). If so, you can download their games as much as you like.

Something similar to "X-Com: UFO Defense" / "UFO: Enemy Unknown" (same game, American / European versions. Only some very small details are different) is "Jagged Alliance". Jagged Alliance 2 was recently (well, fairly recently) re-released with the original, the expansion, and an additional semi-official expansion. I think it's called "Jagged Alliance 2: Wildfire" and was released to promote Jagged Alliance 3, which is now being developed, and I think it's fairly cheap. There was a whole lot of talk going on around about that, 'cause the company that developed the first 3 games (JA, JA: Deadly Games and JA 2) was disbanded and the rights were sort of hanging in the air for a while. They were purchased by another company though, and from what I understand, many from the original team are now working on the new one.
If you don't know about X-com/UFO, it's, er, turn-based tactical squad warfare. The JA series (especially JA 2, not so much JA: DG) are a bit of a hybrid between that and RPG (some minor RPG elements).

Oh, and if you want RPGs, here's a thread to get you started.

Commandos 2 (military game with overhead view of controlling a few men, coop support)
Thief 2 (thief was always good)
Deus Ex (duh)
Grim Fandango (must have)
Septerra Core (I forgot about this, but it is indeed a pretty fun game, turnbased rpg)
Tomb Raider (some of them didn't suck)

Nothing wrong with the emulator itself, but are there acctually any legal games you can get for them? If you have a PS, you can get a PS emulator and play the PS games you already have via your CDrom drive (I think)

People have made freeware games for them, and there are a few demos, but aside from that, you're not going to get any legal n64 roms unless you have a copier. For the freeware and demos, you might try gah! I thought I just finished doing another anti-piracy edit to remove a link to this site!

It's only anti-piracy if the site in question contains actual piracy (hint: no).

Mmkay, looked at it a wee bit more, and it seems you're right. I'll do the courtesy of re-posting the link for you: http://www.zophar.net/

There is only one actually old game I would play besides StarCarft/WarCraft back from 98. Although this one was orginally released in 97.. it was near the end.

My own personal favorite, and has had a few spinoffs from it.

Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight

Sequel to Dark Forces, so if you like Star Wars games give it a try.

First installment of the whole Jedi Knight series that spawned, Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy. Although this was before Raven got their grubby little hands on it, so its all LucasArts engine. :-)

I loved the multiplayer and singleplayer.

Single Player: Play as Kyle Katarn and learn to use the force.

MultiPlayer: Has a classic deathmatch format, with options for full powered force (8 stars) or No force, or light sabers only.

Extremely popular in 98/99/00. Sadly multiplayer has kind of died, but just about any computer can run it, Need to run in compatability mode for XP home/Pro.. and on 2k, you do need SP2. :-)
