Jesus I thought I was the only person on earth who liked MW4. Everyone poo-poos it saying MW3 was better, but I disagree, MW4 was better in nearly every way, and I especially liked the 'mech hardpoint' weapon selections, which made much more sense then putting LRM20's on my mechs ankles like you did in MW3.
Aside, get ALL the mechwarrior games for ubermechage.
Not the best KQ game since deviated from the whole thing that made the whole KQ series a real hit, but still a good (First)Third-Person/Fantasy/Fighter/RPG.
No One Lives Forever (Orginal)
Great game. Good level design, good wepons, great humor.
Star Trek: Elite Force
The best Star Trek game ever. Good story and levels.

Definitely System Shock 2. On impossible. With the gamma way down. As OSA.
Pance scaring and downright DIFFICULT.
Oh and Star Control 2 The Ur-Quan Masters is great as well, despite being old it is AWESOME as far as RPG's go. The music alone is worth it, and the game is great too
I can't beleive nobody has suggested age of empires 2. best RTS ever. hands down. You might have some issues playing online with a router, though. So I can't play it anymore
Back then i was really into RTS and enjoyed playing Metal Fatigue, a crazy build base and custom robo to go battle it out. It was quite fun atleast for me.
Hundreds of units, thousands of add-ons, weeks, if not solid months of gameplay and limitless strategy. Music is also awesome

One of the first games I had. It's the one on a bunch of islands (the one fantasy island is pretty cool, with the tricking the weird things out of their 5 senses).
I've never beat it .
Well, despite your desperation for 1998-2002, I'm going to have to suggest Sid Meiers: Colonization (it works on XP, from XP DOS emulation! ). I have the disc here somewhere, but on this computer, I downloaded it from a russian site (which supposedly had a Russian version...but it only changes the $ next to gold to some weird 'o' thing with 'x's coming off it). It would probably be fairly confusing to someone who has no idea what's going on, so I'd suggest trying for a boxed copy anyway.
On a similar vein of games, Conquerors of the New World is very similar but has better grahpics (3d-ish), a cool combat system, and it has multiplayer...it's fun but not really overly exciting is single player (plus it DOES NOT work on XP...and I can't find a site to fix that in anyway - although combat simulation works...go figure).
SimCity 2000 or SimCity 3000 are both pretty nice ( I like 2000 for the archologies, woot Launch Arco!); but 3000 seems to have a much more effective and nice interface over SimCity 4...which is why I still like it: The SimCity 3000: Unlimited pack should be available pretty cheap, probably packaged with SimGolf and crap.
Freelancer (newest game on this list, heh), looks nice, is fairly new, and is awesome on a LAN. Get some friends and shoot eachother down/do a mission together. If it had more mods it be really worth it...better if you can just share with a friend for a LAN.
Okay, so most of those aren't really shooters or RPGs...but well, you might find them fun.
Psst, mandatory: Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 (in XP set them to Windows 95 compatability...for FO1 at least, FO2 seems to work without).
Lots of people probably have already suggested System Shock 2, Thief 2, Deus Ex and Sid Meiers: Alpha Centauri (man, I want that game and its expansion ).
Thanks a lot, everyone! I'm going to be taking a look for some of these games soon. I've already played System Shock 2, but I didn't really like it. I think that the first thing I'm going to look for is Deus Ex. I haven't played that, but lots of people talk about it, so I suppose I will.
Thanks again, keep the suggestions coming, if you've got any!

Definitely Monkey Island. All of them. Well... actually, only the first two. The rest blew, thanks to the publisher making the license turn tricks with any seedy developer who might crank out a game, ignoring exactly who Guybrush Threepwood is.
Day of the Tentacle. Oh, and the Sam & Max talkie version. Older games, play around with Wing Commander 1-3... though I really didn't like 3. The ending sucked.
If you can find it, the Discworld game was pretty fun, with a lot of interesting humor.
Battlezone. Mix between tank shooter and RTS(unless you find the Really Old Battlezone which was an arcade game and looked like a badly made HL map with gl_wireframe on. Haven't played that one though.), and totally pwns. I wish I could find it... Possibly Heroes of Might & Magic III, but it's more of a strategy game.

I'd steal the thumbs up emoticon from Penny Arcade if I wasn't so lazy.
Caesar 3 is a pretty good game where you have to manage a roman city. IIRC, it also had a sequel called "Zeus", but both are pretty much the same. Deus EX is rather good game, but the AI couldn't be dumber. Also, of the No One Lives Forever, you seriously have to try the sequel and forget all about the first part -the GUI is rather horrible.
Strange that no one has mentioned Half-Life yet -I can only recommend it.

What is it with people who say Deus Ex had bad AI? Do they want enemies that have eyes in the back of their head, can see around corners, and have perfect accuracy? I've come to the conclusion that they're just lying.

Settlers 2, Civilization2 , Daggerfall! Tree winners! Zeus (not it's name but..) is a cartonified and simplified caesar 3 Caesar 3 is a good but very hard game
what a crap set of boundaries for a recommendation, but recommend I shall, QUAKE 2!!!!!!!!!(!!!!!!) If there is one game I play when I lose faith in FPS in anyway it is this game! Medium paced, strategic and damn right fun, admittedly not so much fun with low ping but the ssg is damn meaty

True Classics, Back when Lucasarts actually made Adventure Games instead of slapping Star Wars over everything.
Ground Control: You can grab this for free off of Fileplanet. Great game. A very non-traditional RTS.
