Or lack thereof...
First let me say this: THIS IS NOT A FLAMEFEST, DO NOT NAME ANY NAMES
/me dons protective antiflamesuit cause it will happen anyway
Well, I don't know why people have an EXTREME lack of grammar in these forums, not to mention spelling skills. People that are in Europe or other countries have thier reasons (ie: language barriers) but otherwise why have bad spelling skills??
This isnt MSN, IRC, AIM, YAHOO, ICQ or other IM programs where replying quickly is important, rather, you have all the time in the world to make your forum post. Really you could wait for another 5 minutes to just spellcheck it...
Otherwise I think that alot of them are just honest spelling mistakes, but these mistakes can end up in ugly situations where people don't know whats going on due to the wrong words being said.
So for all the people, spellcheck and proofread! Now, post comments, but please don't name names or point fingers or flame and stupid crap like that... that would be worse than not spelling correctly.

Oh, and for humor's sake:

If you're going to post on the incorrectness of grammar and terrible spelling, proofread (I thought it was two words, gee-gee) and get rid of the mistakes in your own post.
I really don't have a problem with spelling mistakes as long as the sentences are coherent. We're not judging people here. Somebody taking 5 minutes to do a spellcheck is more time consuming than my 2 seconds it takes to re-read the word and understand what the poster really meant.
As for misspelled words possibly having two meanings, can you give some examples? Usually in a board like this one it's easy to use the context to understand what a person means.

Also for humour. "Never remove a splinter from your brother's eye until you notice the plank in your own"
Also, they should know the difference between:
Know, No, & Now,
To, Too, & Two,
Their, There, & They're.
It's & Its

I think Adj's comment about making sure it's viable communication is the best middle ground you're going to find among everyone involved. You wanna spell "are" as "r" or "you're" as "ur" or "your"? Fine. Just make sure your target reader can interpret the text you're authoring. It may sound obvious, but it often times doesn't happen, and that effort IS a sign of respect toward your target reader.

I am with Blue on this one, and I even have english as a 2nd language
Also, in response to the quote:
But, you see, it is NOT just 2 seconds for you. It is also 2 seconds for me and for Nem0, Wyzcrak, IceBaron, etc. Every time you don't bother to check a word you are unsure about, because "omg it takes 35 seconds" you waste 2 seconds of EVERY readers time.
To paraphrase Henry Rollins: "Dude whats your problem? It's 2 seconds. 2 seconds... TWO seconds of time, I don't get for myself, he is MURDERING me, just a little. Tiny increments of time are being TORN away from me and I don't know this guy, all I know is: It's REALLY flocking easy to do a spell-check."
*cough* Thank you all. The rest of his diatribe can be found on the excellent "Throughtbox" album.
a lot is two words
In addition, there are READERS who have english as their second, or even 3rd+, language. If half of the letters in your posts are actually numbers, or if you make up words on the spot/ use dialect, then it's a big strain on their linguistic skills.
(Come to think of it, I used "kek" earlier, but in the context it's easy to see it means "rubbish". )
/me complements himself from getting out of a tight corner
Of course, if you feel it necessary to use some excessive abbreviations/l33t speak/regional dialect in your posts, please give a translated version below.

Seriously, if I ever see someone typing 'u' or 'ur' or any other witless contraction, something inside me snaps. Try as I might, I tend to assume that the person is an idiot, and to treat anything else they type with less respect than if they had simply pressed a few more keys. It doesn't take that much more effort, people.

Well put, Bob. There's a quote from Nemisis Zero floating around; to paraphrase:

QUOTE

There are no such words in the English language as 'u' 'thru' or 'daza' and these boards are English only.

And one more thing: check my signature. I think it's pertinant.
He isn't speaking of small spelling mistakes. Like most have joked about in this thread by quoting each other. ie "a lot", "proofread", or missing the occasional punctuation. It's when people look down right stupid by their lack of english skills. Enough said.

Ok...
"Thier" isn't a word, so we'll put that under the "honest spelling mistakes" category shall we?
I think you're being a *tad* too self-centered when you say "Europeans or people from other countries," I automatically read "than America" behind it. If I'm wrong then ignore my post, but can we please assume that even people who live and have been raised in a country where English is the native language make spelling mistakes in the forums?
Besides getting that off my chest, personally I don't take anyone who replaces letters with numbers seriously (besides the "word" "m8"), unless it's intended as pun. Can't say that I give anyone who writes "ur" "r" "u" and so on, a very high rating either.
Whenever I get annoyed at someone who cannot seem to write a post that can be defined as "English", I just skip it or have a nice piece of "vlaai" to comfort me.
I'm Dutch.
As a general note, the word "noob", and its other various forms, including "n00b", "newb", "newbie" and "N:)B" annoys me a great deal. I guess the most english way to spell it is newbie, so that ain't too bad on the ol' noggin, but god almighty! Curse those evil noobers!
WARNING: The poster is likely to be a hypocrit in that he has used the said annoying words on this forum. If so, it was a slip of the...finger....ahem

anyways, think of yourselves as on the frontier of creating a new language.
As many of you will have read otherwhere, English is my second language, which is quite handy in such discussions because I've got an easy excuse for all the stupid mistakes I'll be making in the following. That said, I do, and will continue to, moderate obviously deliberately faulty English as a rule violation.
My deepest sympathies to everyone trying to pick this language up and stumbling in the process - I was there once, myself. Nonetheless, if you are bold enough to venture into a discussion board explicitely limited to a single language, you should be capable of at least rudementarily communicating your thoughts in it.
If you, on the other hand, grew up speaking English and just don't feel it necessary to observe its most basic rules, you'd best not expect sympathy from me. Not only is it obnoxious towards those members already struggling with the language as it adds further obstacles to their already considerable plight (learning English is not easy), a unnecessarily rash treatment of the language will often undermine your own points, reducing your credibility, and can lead to people taking offense. I don't mind an occasional 'thier', but if your posts look like something a first-semester cryptographer could test brute force approaches on, I draw the line. I have so far not been forced to suspend a user based on such behaviour, but I would have exceptionally little qualms doing so.
English is, in my opinion, a beautiful language, admirable in it's elegance and versatility. Respect it.
That construct is found in at least 3 other languages, a local newspapwer here ran a story on it. Unfortunatley, it is also not true. While is SEEMS true in this case, it is not something that can be generally applied.
But fun? Yeah... I'd say so.
