meh, Coil has some good points (neither of them ran an actual experiment)
However neither of them realy makes McD's to be good OR bad.
It is often not what you eat, but how much.
All these stupid diets that claim that it is X Item that is horible for you are wrong. In truth it is your Caloric intake that matters (combined with exersise).
I can reproduce both of those "experiments" at any resturant you want, or even in my own home (well assuming that some one gives me the $$ <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->).
I eat around a 3K Calories/day diet, and I am over weight.
If I droped down to around 2.5K-2K I would lose weight. If I went up to 5K-5.5K I would gain.
The reason why eating things that McD's serves can be dangerous is b/c many of those items have alot more Calories then items you could be eating and getting the same amount of food (Fat and sugar have alot of Calories, thus hamburgers and soda can quickly send your Calorie count way up).
Meh, I like to have Whaley's "experiment" to use as a counter point to Spurlock's
Being over in France for almost a month, the drinking age is only 16, and I'm 17, also american so I can't legally drink until 21. I gained almost 15 pounds in 4 weeks on their delicious european beer. Since coming home 3 days ago, I've already lost 6 pounds. I think it's kind of funny, and I'm not overweight.
Anyway point is: It's how much you eat of a substance that usually matters more than what you eat.

well that and beer has alot of Calories in it <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Both of these are stupid. No one eats at Mcdonalds 3x a day TRYING to get fat (That guys experiment proves nothing - I can do the same thing at a steakhouse), and no one eats at Mcdonalds ordering a shake and salad (But she did prove that Mcdonalds isn't all 'ROFL OUR SALADS HAVE 6,000,000 CALORIES!!!).
Only the Europeans think that we all stop at Mcdonalds first thing in the morning. Newsflash - I don't know WHERE you get your communist propoganda from, Europe, but stop freaking BELIIEVING IT. As near as I can tell we have more Starbucks stores then we have McDonalds (Both places I've lived and moved from in the last year have had maybe two McDonalds but about four or five starbucks stores).

They have been lowering prices and increasing serving size, and they do market to kids. Carbohydrates and sugar are addicting, if you have a person who has been eating McDonalds since he was 5 he sure as hell isn't going to be ordering 1 fill'o'fish and a carton of milk.
McDonalds also uses mass produced and processed potatos and beef, they actually have farms that specifically grow potatos for McDonalds. So what are you trying to say McDonalds isn't unhealthy and they aren't trying to sell as much food as possible? Because that's simply not true. America doesn't merely have a gaggle of people who utterly can't control themselves and overreat more than any other country in the world. It's not logical to think that way, but what is logical is to turn on the TV and watch how many food commercials you see within in an hour. And how many of those commericals are going to be for Arby's, Subway, Quiznos, McDonalds, Wendy's, Burger King, Jack in the Box, TGIF, and how many are going to be for whole ground beef from a supermarket.
These companies aren't innocent victims they are using food as a means to make money, and just like any company they are going to do anything to increase profits. Unfortunatly when it comes to food when you sell more and more of it people become obese and you can't just dismiss it as lack of willpower. Obesity is becomming the number 1 case of death in America, more than cigarettes, more than drugs, and that's complete and utterly due to lack of regulations on the food industry.

It should be noted that Spurlock's aim wasn't to prove that McD's makes you fat. His aim was to show what McD's food can do to you on *all* fronts, not just the weight-gain angle.
What happened to him? His skin became greasy and unhealthy, he had no energy, his liver nearly committed suicide, and he gained 30 pounds. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. The doctor he had monitoring him told him to quit after 21 days; *everyone* told him to quit after 21 days, except one brother who convinced him to suck it up for 9 more days.
McDs' market is a market of scale. People are becoming aware of just how enormous their meals are, and it's having repercussions. McD's is phasing out its Supersize drinks and fries (though it denies that the movie had anything to do with the decision). They're adding an "ActiveMeal" to the menu - a healthier "adult happy meal." They're changing, in part because people like Spurlock are getting the word out about just how bad some of this food is for you.
Again: his experiment wasn't about gaining weight, and it was never about blaming McD's for America's obesity.

But again, didn't the Tobacco company end up getting sued because they skewed how addictive and dangerous their cigarettes were. Sure people were AWARE they were bad and addictive, but the company themselves never fessed up to it. No one bats an eye when they see a comercial showing a bunch of fake corpses on the street that supposedly shows how many people die from smoking. What those comercials don't show you is a lot of those people have diabaties and heart conditions because of weight problems on top of smoking. Add about 3000 bodies to the "killed by cigs" pile and you have an idea of what obesity is duing to this country.
You may not want to admit it, and you may not want to regard obesity as a disease, but the fact is there is a part of negligence on the restraunt that would willingly give a triple hamburger, extra large fries, and an extra large soda to someone who weighs 350 pounds. These people have a health problem they shouldn't be exploited. Just like Alcohol companies can't go to AA meetings and market their products, Fast Food chains and restraunts should take a little responsibilty upon themselves.
Either way the argument is moot. America is riding a growing health trend. And not the cop-out kinda health either (fat free food, fad diets, etc). The good, wholesome "get excersize and watch what you eat." Sure alot of people still do whacked out things like stay on protien and fat for months or even years (!), but now that most of us have seen what is actually going on, it's a little different. I hope anyway.
And that's the buety of our society. Anyway, Dr. D, love the sig. Rock all the way!

Nicotine is a physical addiction.
Food is not. It is strictly psycological, and there's nothing these overweight rhinos can do about it since it's THEIR FAULT 100%.
Actually both sugar and complex carbohydrates have physically addictive properties.
Withdrawl symptoms include Exhaustion Edginess Craving for more of the substance In some cases depression
similar withdrawls to cocain.
Try not having any sugar for a week see how you feel.
And those overweight rhinos don't cook the greasball burgers in their own kitchens so how is it exactly 100% their fault. Unless you grow your own food and cook it yourself what you eat is never "100% your fault".
<!--QuoteBegin-dr.d+Jul 22 2004, 05:46 PM--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (dr.d @ Jul 22 2004, 05:46 PM)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> Actually both sugar and complex carbohydrates have physically addictive properties.

Also there's another key difference between sugars/carbohydrates and tobacco - Tobacco is a controlled substance.
I'm sure since you are so opiniated on the subject you already know that page like the back of your hand, as well as the coorperate framework for McDonalds, and have memorized every single news article on the subject so I'm probably just rehashing information. But for the minute possibilty that you aren't educated on the subject, take a look.
PS Tobacco is quite legal, I think you meant Federaly regulated, and even that isn't accurate since there are independent organic growers. And no not being able to purchase it until you are 18 doesn't make it a controlled substance, hence you can't get arrested for possesing tobacco if you are under 18.
<!--QuoteBegin-dr.d+Jul 22 2004, 05:55 PM--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (dr.d @ Jul 22 2004, 05:55 PM)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> Drive Thrus, 5 dollar lunches that have 3000 calories, and 24 hour a day TV ads have similar effect EEK. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> So what do you propose? We make a treadmill attached to the microwave you have to run on to power it?
I hate fat people as much as the next guy but I also hate this bleeding heart sympathy for these people.
I don't feel sympathetic for people with emphysema and lung cancer from smoking.
I don't feel sorry for these people living under freeways with nothing but a bottle of booze because they drank themselves out of house and home.
No sympathy for the forty+ year old man working behind a register living in a rental house who has to bike to work because he lost all his money feeding a slot machine.
I could care less about these people that commit suicide in a post-heroin-withdrawl depression.
I don't care about these girls that drop out of high school so they can have a baby, and by the time they're 18 their daughter/son is 3.
So why, being 19 years old, 130 pounds, and in great physical shape, growing up in a country that apparently is famous for 'being fat and lazy', should I feel sorry for these people that are so piggishly and grotesquely obese and are just as powerless to stop their fate?
It all started somewhere. The smoker picked up a cigarette when he was fourteen and hadn't quit since. The wino always put down a lot of drinks at parties and would pass out in the corner. The compulsive gambler decided to go into a casino on some stupid 'get rich quick' idea and lost. The druggie used both his braincells and decided to try a needle at 18. The girl decided that screwing without a condom at 16 was fun. The fat guy decided he could eat whatever he wants whenever he wants and reserves his right to be a lazy SOB.
What do all these people have in common?
They all have a problem that has had severe consequences on their life.
All of them developed that problem through no fault but their own.
All of them cared too little at the time, or care too little now to FIX that problem.
If they're gonna die an early death, let em, clean the gene pool a bit.
Unless you propose on making obesity a capital offense there's little you can really do. If these people are physically addicted, like you say, cutting down McDonalds meals won't help: They'll just order more more more.

This is NOT the same effect as most addictive drugs. Yes, you can go through withdrawl, however you need to eat ALOT of carbs in one sitting and then wait a few hours.
Also, the withdrawl symptoms are NOTHING like hard drugs (Opiates, Caffine, Alchohol, Nicotine etc) and are over almost instantly.
yes, there are so called 'food addicts', however it is not carbs they are addicted to, it is generaly the actual act of eating or not eating that they are addicted to (aka a psychological addiction)

All of Coil's points are correct (sorta) HOWEVER, what Spurlock (keep wanting to call him Sparticus, not sure why) was trying to show has nothing to do with how every one has taken his movie.
Everyone just jumps on the idea of McD's = EVIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111oneoneoneeleven Especialy people on this forum when Super Size Me was first brought up.
As for McD's just being out to make $$, well yah they are. but then again so is every company.
And if you want a drug pusher to lynch, I offer up Coil (bast'g is pushing one of the most addictive substances there is, Cafine)
/me gets out the rope and try and hunts down Coil.

Anyway point is: It's how much you eat of a substance that usually matters more than what you eat.
They're both idiots.
Fixed your 'experiment' because it was incredibly stupid.
If you want to find out how Americans eat, you follow them around for a year. It'd be incredibly hard to do, complex, and expensive, but just going to McDonalds and skewing your results by ordering a quadruple cheese burger with extra cheese and mayo and then saying 'ROFL MCDONALDS MAKES YOU FAT NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO' is idiocy. It proves nothing.
You can literally do the same thing at a sushi restaurant by eating nothing but teriyaki, soy sauce, and rice. THE WORLD WILL THEN BE IN HORROR BECAUSE SUSHI RESTAURANTS MAKE YOU FAT!!!!

But the fact is most people who go to McDonalds DO order value meals, and meals HAVE been getting bigger.

And that's the buety of our society. Anyway, Dr. D, love the sig. Rock all the way!

Nicotine is a physical addiction.
Food is not. It is strictly psycological, and there's nothing these overweight rhinos can do about it since it's THEIR FAULT 100%.
Withdrawl symptoms include
Exhaustion
Edginess
Craving for more of the substance
In some cases depression
similar withdrawls to cocain.
Try not having any sugar for a week see how you feel.
And those overweight rhinos don't cook the greasball burgers in their own kitchens so how is it exactly 100% their fault. Unless you grow your own food and cook it yourself what you eat is never "100% your fault".

Last time I checked Ronald McDonald didn't break into houses and threaten you with a knife to go to McDonalds.
Also there's another key difference between sugars/carbohydrates and tobacco - Tobacco is a controlled substance.
And I know your being an **** for the hell of it, and you aren't really ingorant and inflammatory. But your starting to grate my nerves a bit.
<a href='http://www.obesityresearch.org/cgi/content/full/9/9/552' target='_blank'>http://www.obesityresearch.org/cgi/content/full/9/9/552</a>
I'm sure since you are so opiniated on the subject you already know that page like the back of your hand, as well as the coorperate framework for McDonalds, and have memorized every single news article on the subject so I'm probably just rehashing information.
So what do you propose? We make a treadmill attached to the microwave you have to run on to power it?
Actually, that'd be pretty cool <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
*shrug*
/me burns you to death.
I love you.

Personaly? I think EEK is way off base.

All of Coil's points are correct (sorta) HOWEVER, what Spurlock (keep wanting to call him Sparticus, not sure why) was trying to show has nothing to do with how every one has taken his movie.
Everyone just jumps on the idea of McD's = EVIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111oneoneoneeleven

In Sbux's defense, the B&N cafe is a licensed store, not an actual corporate Starbucks. The same is probably true of the CM store, but I'm not sure.
