This generally leads normal people to getting **** off because someone can act like such a moron. If you don't act like you would normally (albeit maybe a bit less shy for most people, with a bit more caution), you're just being dishonest. If this brings out a "Hey, lets cheat at games, make fun of people for no reason (because they can't beat me through a computer screen!), insult people's religion/race/ethnicity/gender/abilities, insult people randomly and screw with people for the heck of it!" in you - you should probably get yourself examined.
Just because people can't stop you from doing something - doesn't mean you should go and do it.
Of course, some people are just way to easily irked out of line. If you get offended by simple swearing, people telling you you're wrong,. people countering your ideas and talking the occasional smack to you - well then the internet's probably not for you (and most of real-life as well).
I guess it would come down to: people expect you to act psuedo-normal. In an attempt to turn this into a vaguely sensible thread, people really shouldn't ever get upset on the internet. The only thing that annoys me is when I get completely ignored (why I'm posting on this thread I've no idea as I probably will be ignored).
Its so sad that so many people on the internet try and annoy other people. I mean, what is the point? Why make some one angry? Does it make you feel bigger, cleverer? No, all it does is upset someone else for no reason what so ever.
I have absolutely no respect for people like that. There is nothing wrong with just playing around, joking with each other but if I ever accidently upset someone by it I would be on my metaphorical knees begging for forgiveness, I've never once set out to hurt someone and the idea is so... just so ludicrous... Why? Why would someone do it...
Yes. It reminds me of the pathetic advertisements that are fed into my computer perpetually. It also reminds me of the pathetic creatures that make computer programs like trojans. There is a lot that does make me angry, but I think the most important thing we all have to remember is not to feed the trolls.
Because people aren't robots. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I don't get really <i>angry</i> angry, just a bit angry, when people ignore every single thing i'm saying, or while a few people are having a discussion in game, and some retard pops in, starts stubbornly stating a blatant lie, which he/she believes to be true, and nothing will convince him/her to see otherwise.

Nothing like downloading cheats in counter-strike and getting banned from every server, not saying I do. It's just funny watching people getting **** out of their minds over a video game. Realistically speaking, well whatever realism is in a game for e.g. chatting, I think some of them take it so ####ing seriously for something that isn't CAL and whatnot.

One thing I don't understand however is how some people get so outrageously upset over certain things, and yes this IS a serious topic, I would like to hear what everyone else thinks of it. For example, in the other thread with the anti-bush game, a certain person became extremely angry for something really silly, and insulted as a defense mechanism.

90% is a combination of teenage angst combined with the 'safety net' of knowing you don't face these people in any real life situation, either face to face or over the telephone.
Goodness, I sometimes get so incensed while on the internet that I have to count to a hundred before continuing. It's very rare that I can make a friend on the web because I hate everyone so much, for reasons some would call petty. But after visiting your average NS server or message board, I wouldn't change myself for the world.
It's odd really, because away from the net I'm such a nice guy!
I love it when people say "In real life I'm a nice person, the internet just doesn't count!"
People forget that the internet is real life too, the people you communicate are real people and when you upset them there is someone out there incredibly upset and powerless to do anything about it.
Be nice everywhere, whether you can see the person or not. Saying, I'm nice in real life is basically saying "I'm only nice when I have to be i.e. when there are consequences, otherwise I'm an evil sod who doesn't care about anyone else".
Surely a morale code shouldn't collapse the minute you discover noone can give you a smack in the mouth for being a <insert random bad word here>
To rephrase, people that are spouting moronic fanboy vitriol or repeating profane misspelt abbreviations every other bloody message are people that are not worth my pleasant, downright nice-guy nature.
true and I wasn't actually accusing you of a lack of morales, that phrase just set me off <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
However those same people that aren't worth being nice to also aren't worth being nasty too, just don't respond to them. All they want is attention, don't give it to them.

I like annoying people who deserve it. Like.... well you've all met someone that deserves it in a game at some point.
I don't get annoyed by what people say though, but i do get incredibly angry (and sometimes i even cry ffs) when i do really crap at something i know i'm good at (like a game, for example). I broke my hand (and part of the wall) once after a particularly bad game of NS.
Guess i'm just stupid though. I think i'm over that anyway <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Yeah, I'd got wound up when I lost the internet for the first time (year and a half, not had much luck really) and I went from a top medic to a fairly good medic, was fine on public servers would used to get stuck doing things I used to be able to fly past.
Then I'd think, oh well, it doesn't matter and then my building frustrations would dissipate and I'd be back to skipping through no mans land again.
One thing that really pisses me off is my ISP, Wanadoo. Once a week or so, my internet will go down, so I phone them up, they say unplug it for half and hour(in the basement) and then plug it back in. Now normally this works, and i'll just play something with Bots, or a singleplayer Game, But a while back, it didnt work, so i unplugged it again, and... nothing, so i give up. My dad goes on the PC.... no problems, it always works for my parents, but never for me(well at least that's what it feels like).

So far, I can only recall seriously abusing Internet anonymity on 2 occassions:
1. One dealt with a debate I had with regards to a religion basher I was talking with, and when his narrow-mindedness finally cracked my patience, (I knew my patience wasn't meant to last long anyway; to begin with, the forum I wrote on didn't was a supposedly Christian forum with <b>no mod control</b>, no need for registration, and a handful of anti-religious zealots - I think the outcome was rather obvious, so I named myself 'Flamebaited'), so to end off my 'debate' with him, I basically ended off my last post with a jab at him, and classified him as <a href='http://www.winternet.com/~mikelr/flame78.html' target='_blank'>Stone Deaf</a>.
2. For those still remembering Scooter-Blue's escapade to wage war on our forums, I decided to join in on the fun, adopting some odd name, and claiming that I was silently dying of my persecution on the NS forums here and was looking for help. Well... one person fell for it, and in one spirit-lifiting post, I dropped to 'battle.net forum poster average intelligence' and berated my attacker in a less than dignified manner.
Bonus points for anyone who can discover my identity on <a href='http://nsforumreform.proboards21.com/' target='_blank'>Scooter's decrepit domain</a>. Nice to pay him a urinate on his ruins once in a while...
[edit]Come to think of it... I was a LOT better behaved back when I began posting at the age of 12. I always took offense when I'd see posts like 'We don't want 12yo AOLers on our forum!' - well not something that severe, but you get my drift.[/edit]

You know, it is interesting that someone did actually bring up that the internet IS real life. That is such a revelation for some people. There are people that make their entire living from the internet and spend a large majority of their time online as well. That's their reality. So yeah, the internet IS reality, just less of a physical reality and more of a mental reality.
<!--QuoteBegin-TommyVercetti+Jul 29 2004, 04:12 PM--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (TommyVercetti @ Jul 29 2004, 04:12 PM)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> <!--QuoteBegin-CMEast+Jul 29 2004, 07:16 AM--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (CMEast @ Jul 29 2004, 07:16 AM)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> People forget that the internet is real life too, the people you communicate are real people and when you upset them there is someone out there incredibly upset and powerless to do anything about it. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> Uh, since most people on the internet behave like retards (literally) they deserve the angst they're going to get if they mess with us. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd--> You are right in that they deserve... well a lot of things, none of them nice.
However do you seriously believe that they will be upset when you sink to their level and start 'fighting back'?
What they will do is start skipping around their PC because they've caught another one. They really don't care about anything you have to say, you can insult them all you want and they'll just say "so what", however you will be getting more and more angry and upset.
Doesn't sound like you're punishing them to me, sounds like you've just fallen into their trap. If they get annoying tell them to stop, if they don't stop then ignore them, if they keep on going and it's obvious that they are just trying to cause trouble then inform the admin and get them band. Now that <b>will</b> upset them.
