<span style='color:white'><span style='font-size:21pt;line-height:100%'>ATTENTION ALL FORUM-GOERS.</span>
This forum has a very firm no-warez policy. With DOOM 3's release, there's been a great deal of talk recently about it... and frequently, about how/where to "acquire" it (especially for those who can't get it till later, e.g. the UK).
Let me repeat that: THIS FORUM HAS A VERY FIRM NO-WAREZ POLICY.
As such, discussion of warez, for the immediate future, will result in a <u><b>one-day ban</b></u>. No questions, no exceptions. If you ask where you can get it, tell where you can, post a link, even just say "I was playing my *cough*legally purchased*/cough* copy of DOOM 3 and..." you're gone. Moderators know what sarcasm is. Don't bother.</span>

I was going to make a new topic for this, but given coil's warning it's probably safer to just do it here:
I read the BBC's article (<a href='http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3527332.stm' target='_blank'>http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3527332.stm</a>) about the Doom 3 warezing, and I was reminded of some of the excuses people gave me when I was telling them off for warezing Doom 3 in IRC last night - mostly it was a bunch of "why would I buy a game that won't run on my system" "I'm just grabbing it to see if I can run it".
So in theory, wouldn't it be possible for a software company to, instead of making an actual demo before release, make some kind of "benchmark" demo thingy, that would maybe render something like a small environment (a couple of rooms maybe) at varying detail levels so people know how they can expect the game to run?
Would that: (a) be easier or more sensible than making an actual demo? (b) cut down on people warezing the game?
edit: See you all tomorrow when the ban warez (wears - geddit?) off! <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Well, two things:
1) id released recommended system specs on various websites, and also gave DOOM 3 to places like HardOCP so they could play it themselves and offer hardware recommendations.
2) There will be a demo which, presumably, will give gamers an idea of performance on their system. That's due out soon.

Uh just a small correction to the mod who said that we shouldn't talk about our legit copy of doom 3. It is already released in some parts of the world even though it is not out in the US.
So, can people say: "I was just playing my legit copy of Doom 3..." now?
