Conformity

stupid herding
Just saw a poster that reads, "Conformity -- Proudly serving painfully boring people since time began." Behind the text is a picture of a croud of people from the 40s. They're all wearing relatively the same cloths.
Got me thinking about there are just as many stupid people as there have always been... only now they're allowed to think for themselves and make choices (see: Jerry Springer's show for examples).
Wasn't a complete thought... that's all I've got... discuss.

Reverse psychology strikes again!
Well give that it was the 40's, there's a chance that because of the war more extravagant cloths were not available (Such as silk wasn't), so the choice of cloths for tailors would have been rather limited.

Stupid people have always had the same right to infect others with their stupidity then just as they do now.

Discuss what, exactly?

It's from the South Park episode where they ask the goth kids to help them in a dance competition. The one kid, after hearing all his goth buddies say they won't, actually does help them, because by doing so he is being a non-conformist among his non-conformist buddies.
Edit: Also, this topic belongs in 'Discussion' not 'Off-Topic'.
Oh noes! they're changing nature! They're playing God! Call people who care!
I used to think the same way, but meh, I got over it. It adds variety to life n stuff. And it's really not worth it getting annoyed at those people. The people that you should use your energy being annoyed with are people who are annoyingly stupid. Hmm.. there may be some circular logic there.
I also like the band Aqua, so i'm really not gothy in any sense of it. I just like black. Probably because i always manage to get my clothes dirty somehow and it doesn't show up as well on black.
Oh dear.
nothing's *wrong* with natural hair color.. but it's fun to dye your hair :o

Well, I could beg to differ in the fact that my eyebrows are effectively clear (basically white), so they don't really show up in pictures. Maybe I'd want them darker so people could see them. Then again, my hair is basically white if it's shaved to about 1/4 and inch...it just gets blonder and redder as you go.
Of course, I've never colored my hair and I don't plan to...if only because: who really cares about hair color specifically?
You could pretend, but really deep down inside you hate every aspect of it and wish to get away from and even yourself.
I don't think we should judge certain people by what they wear or what ideology they might follow, but rather judge them as human beings.
That's what I meant.
Goths are trying to define their roles as human beings by their hair style/color. It's a trivial movement based on aesthetics. That and practically all of them are junkies/depressed losers.

The train to ignorant generalisations has arrived! All aboard! WOO-WOO!

Note the qualifier practically in the above sentence.
There's basically 5 types of goth-esque people:
The people who are goth but only in a melancholy attitude and not really in physical forms (basically loners).
The people who dress in freakishly designed outfits in an attempt to be different, but they act like they don't care.
People who listen to rather outlandish musics and try obscenely different things in an effort to be different.
The people who dress in black to present a point about society.
The people who dress in black and are trying not to 'conform'.
These can all be accompanied by: 1. A spunky attitude; 2. A completely depressed attitude; or 3. An indifferent attitude; or 4. Enjoying the use of drugs to 'escape' society.
There's also: You're pretty much not a goth if someone else hasn't labelled you as such (you're the only one that doesn't count ) in a serious manner.
Of course, some people are just bizarre and label anyone who wears black regularily a goth - these people are idiots and should be avoided.
Of course, you can also be a goth if you:
were part of one of the many Germanic tribes circulating in ancient times, including Visigoths, Ostrogoths, Goths...you know...Goths; or
were part of the upper classes of society during the gothic eras during the renaissance.
Of course...those are kind of different goths.
Non-conformity is making it up as you go along, rather than taking your cue from somewhere else. It's behaving how you like. That doesn't mean you have to be a [rectum] about it, though.
The thing about non-conformity is that, ultimately, you have to be yourself. If you have to force it: don't bother with it. That also means that, unfortunately, if you really intend to bend or ignore society's rules about ordinary behaviour, without the safety blanket of precedent, more often than not you're going to come across as an eccentric oddball, and you have to have the courage and self-confidence to pull it off. That's something I'm finally starting to learn...

I'm trying so hard to be myself...is it working?
IS IT?
[pfffft x 1,000,000; offtopic note: I'm listening to Vivaldi - The Four Seasons - Summer... I like to give my posts a little more substance than 1 sentence; even if that's all the topic contribution I can give. That's why I hate threads at www.halflife2.net, because it's all "Yay. 10 char limit" and "Wow, that's cool." For about 12 pages intersparsed between real posts that actually have substance. That's why this forum is pretty nice, even if there's a bit of covert opression going on in the adminning because it's supposed to be a PG rated board based on an at least T rated mod for an M rated game that no one under 18 should really be playing - although honestly: swears that rhyme with wit, tasdard, wrap and lass are all liable to be said in a PG move. In fact, the Back to the Future series has a word that rhymes with wit on at least one occasion. Thank you for reading this mostly pointless, under-sized gibberish - good day.]
