Keep in mind that there is a difference between goth fashion and goth lifestyle. While someone can like goth fashion, they don't have to be goths. (My friend is an example. She wears goth and industrial clothing, but she's as far from a goth attitude as possible.)

About the conformity thing... Eh. I just do my own thing. I wear what I think is comfortable, and what I think looks nice. I don't care what people think, I like it.

I like to try uncommon, foreign things, because you never know what you might actually like. I'm a barefooter, for instance. And I listen to happy, bubbly Japanese pop, most of the time. If you want to label me as trying to be different, go ahead. I don't care. I'm just doing my own thing.

EDIT: Cut the quote, too long.

"Practically all of them" is a rash generalisation, the addition of the word "practically" does nothing to change that.

And as for your summary of "what is goth", i'll be sure to point the goth community i'm part of in the general direction of this thread, they should find it funny.

What you've done is furthermore display more ignorant generalisations, i'm sorry to say. In my life i've known, gone clubbing with, and socialised with a hell of a lot of goths. I'm good friends with a lot of them and i've been a member of an online goth community for over three years now. They're normal people, just like you or me. They just dress a little differently. Not to go against the grain, not for attention, it's just they have different tastes to you or i. Put it this way, you might like the colour red, but dislike the colour green, and someone else might really like the colour green but dislike red. Same thing. Some people like flamboyant Victorian dress, some people don't. Some people like baggy trousers, tight tops, hair extensions and a set of goggles on their heads, some don't. It's personal preference.

And the whole non-conformist thing? Pah! I'm pretty sure that every single goth i know is aware that conforming to non-conformist ideals or dress is, in itself, conformist. Infact, anyone that splurts the whole "I'm so individual, just like everyone else" ususally gets a torrent of ironic jokes at their expense.

The people you seem so determined to pigeonhole sound like angsty little teenagers that are making some cry for help in vain, or trying to get attention. They're not goths, they're angsty kids, please don't colour us with the same brush.

EDIT: Drugs. Most goths who use drugs (There's a lot of us who don't) don't use them as an escape, they use them for recreation, like alcohol. If they're out clubbing they'll take some MDMA or such, while it's not the safest of recreational activities at all, you can't just instantly claim they're all crying for help and taking drugs to escape reality.

And as for the people who are hooked on drugs to escape reality, are you honestly trying to tell me there's not a single non-goth out there who doesn't do that? Or are you just trying to segregate goths and "normal people"?

Apparently we're misunderstanding this whole...humor thing.

It's when someone is caused to experience pleasure based on the realization of a particular stimuli; in this case it would be sarcasm and a little satire. Humor can also consist of: intelligent mental connections, anecdotes, mistakes (intentional or unintentional), use of word order, puns and irony in written word and almost any other form depending on one's perceptions (which is why some people would find it prudent and normal to say "Hey, that guy just got impaled by a spike, lol!").

Of course, now that I've literally pointed it out, I don't believe I need to sift through the few paragraphs I wrote to write an in-depth report on how "this line contains comedic material because it's not intended to be taken for its literal, word for word value" and that should adequately display that the post was and is, in fact, not meant to be taken seriously (that is except for the first line, because I don't believe Arawn is quite inept to believe that every single person who is a goth smokes pot and is depressed - which is probably the posts sole fault in the humor respect).

[yes, that is one long [bleep]ing sentence]

And...uh...My goth friends can beat up your goth friends...so .
[That, too, is humor - in case you're still missing it...]

I really want to get my hair dyed blonde in a "Tim from Spaced" kind of fashion.

I'd probably give hair-dying a go if my hair wasn't so shiny and soft I'm afraid of damaging it's flowing perfection. Thank heck I'm modest huh? =3

Wow... goths...

All I meant to say was that 100 years ago if some guy wanted to tatoo their girlfriend's name on their neck, conformity smacked the idea down. If some girl wanted to paint their house pink, conformity beat the **** out of her. I'm just saying that conformity used to be a global screener for bad ideas... but now the new wave is individuality. Belive me, I live in a town where bad ideas run rampant like:
- I'm only going to shower once a week cause I like my individual smell.
- I wear this cast on my leg and use crutches, cause it's my style.
- I listen to J-Pop through my walkman 24-7 because it's the music of life.
Final point: Michael Jackson. Does the man have no shame?

I'm just concerned that I'll take one look in the mirror and my mind will go:

You know, folks, we do not permit personal attacks. What makes you think we'll start tolerating generalized insults?
