No, but out of curiosity, when I think of 'military might', the Japanese are probably the last country in my mind to come up. What IS their military? I imagine maybe some submarines and ships...
I can't imagine Japan would have the easiest logistics in the world for dispatching troops, since they can't head north (nothing really up there but Korea), they can't really head west (Somehow I doubt China would appreciate jets flying overhead... especially Japanese ones), it's a long way to head east, and south... you get back to WW2-style island hopping. In talks right now trying work out some licensing issues. However, it is not going well as the corporation in question is notorious for never licensing characters/etc. except to inhouse projects. If our idea wasn't so ambitious (read: time/money consuming) we would consider going solo, however the nature of the project prevents this. If we can/cannot reach an accord, I'll fill in the details.
Originally we were looking towards unreal, however if you have ever read their licensing agreements it is not pretty when dealing with 3rd party property. I have not been too intrested in using HL2 as I do not know what its specific capabilities are at the moment.
Our best bet might be an in house engine (90% complete) that my friend developed as a programming exercise. It is very simple, but probably could fulfil our needs technologically speaking (It landed him a job for the army when they saw it) but a whole array of development tools would have to be made from scratch.

While I'm as excited as the next guy is to get my hands on HL2 and many of the soon to follow mods, what really amuses me is the recurring slogan on these sites: "...featuring brand new gameplay never before seen!" which, of course, is both redundant and highly improbable.
More power to em but I'm guessing most will collapse because they're trying to put everything everyone has ever wanted into their games.
