People bought Doom to shoot stuff, not for the plot. People bought Half-Life for the plot and to shoot stuff (depending) if it was purchased before 1999. People bought Half-Life for the mods and to shoot stuff if it was purchased after 1999.
There...now we've got that all straightened out.

1. It's just a way to form progression. Every game has it. Keys in Resident Evil: same principle, but they don't talk. 2. Obstinately, every game I know of spawns in mosters - some are just spawned in when the level loads. But off a technicality: Plenty of games warp in monsters, and plenty of games have enemies set in specific areas. 3. ...I think slow and dumb is the definition of a zombie (except when it's that one guys book). 4. Usually you get smarter enemies, or stronger enemies as you go. Even Splinter Cell had guys using flashlights and crap the further along you went. 5. Well, I think that one sorts itself out; but for reference, games that don't have end bosses: AvP as an Alien; Halo; Call of Duty, any MoH game, Carnivores ( <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> ), and well...plenty of them. Generally games at least end with a climactic moment (such as racing to the ship in Halo).
I think we can all agree that Doom 3 borrows numerous elements from Half-Life, and Half-Life borrows numerous elements from Doom and Quake - but they're not all copying the same stuff and they all had original ideas. Let's not reinvent the wheel now - if it works: give it to the gamers.

It's not a complete rip off from HL, but the start had enough in common to make me think "wow, just like Half-Life" before I ever read this post.
You report to your job with no weapons, walk around in a high-tech base and get familiar with the game. Then something goes horribly wrong and the combat starts. I bet the developers played and enjoyed Half-Life and decided that would be a good way to kick off the game.

Plenty of other games just show what goes wrong in the opening cinematic and just plop you right into the action. In fact every FPS I can think of except Half-Life and Doom 3 starts this way. Let me try to list some of them out: Wolfenstien 3D, Doom, Doom2, Duke Nukem 3D, Jedi Knight, Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy, System Shock 2, Farcry, Theif 3, Undying. Maybe I havn't played enough games, but Doom 3's intro was similar enough to remind me strongly of Half-Life.
System Shock 2 technically had that "training" portion before the game kicked in where you chose your stats and stuff, and Duke3D follows on vaguely from the DN1 and 2 games where the story was explained. (Not that it was exactly detailed and indepth)
If you also note various plot elements are revealed to you by...scientists throughout the game, another part of HL ;D
Yep most FPS have an "intro" in which all the poop hits the fan than you just start.
I don't blame ID for using this formula as it makes for a more interesting gameplay. Heck if every FPS out there resembled HL more I'd probably end up playing more o fthem.
My main gripe with doom 3 came at the end with the horribly out of place labs sequence after hell. If you pay attention you can see how they just stuck it in bewteen Hell and the final boss. Orginally the cyberdemon was probably supposed to come shortly after the Guardian and it was all supposed to end in Hell like all other Doom games.
Considering how completely useless the battle with Sarge was I think they would have been better off with a shorter game. *shrug*
[IMO]Doom 3 could have been so good if it had stuck to it's proven concept(doom 1/2 style panicky run and gun). Playing doom 1 or 2 is increadibly relaxing, allmost like meditating. You can just play for hours and hours on nightmare, even though you only manage a few levels before losing and then start over, I STILL can, even with the horrendous graphics by todays standards the feel of the game is great. Playing Doom 3 I have to struggle to stay awake, never mind starting over when I lose(I never save or at most once each level if it doesn't do it for me, saving every 2 seconds is about as fun and immersive as playing with no clip).
Doom 3 has some unique features HL never had, most notably the PDA display system and lots and lots of monsters with a strange preference for hiding in closets.
It also had an STC(Start To Crate) time even lower than HL's.[/IMO]

* The bit where you're moving around on that mobile platform - very "On A Rail"
* Hell is also a little like Xen, but without as much sucking.
A: Start out, everythings fine, gawk at the graphics (err .. thats exclusive for Doom3)
B: Hell breaks loose.
C: Beat back hell.
D: Go into hell.
E: Kill hell.
F: Win.
Thats all I know. I havent played the game yet. Replace hell with xen for halflife.
