Hm, there was an interview with Chris Auty (barney) about a year ago where he said that the map has some gameplay flaws and will be overhauled...
Never heard of it again since then.

It takes a lot more than pretty visuals to allow a map to be official.

It has to play very nicely as well.

what the heck are you talking about? if you want the BAD maps here they are

metal, minshaft, and agora isn't all that great

but hera and lost rock, what are you thinking ?

and there really aren't any bad maps. I just like some more then others thats all all maps have fun things about them

Mineshaft and Lost see less play than Siege007

Lost needs to be rearranged slightly, and have the crash bug fixed, but other than that I don't understand why people don't play it, other than the lousy marine start. Lost has almost as many vents as Nancy or Agora, and vents are the reason I started playing Natural Selection a couple years ago.

Mineshaft could be improved a number of ways. The map is layed out so that the marines have a downhill path all the way to double and messhall. Once they break down the elevator and into mess and sleeping, Drill and Sewer are gone. Tram is too far from both the other hives.

Official NS maps don't have too many problems, but they get played out. We can't very well play the older versions of a map, which would be a convenient way to throw some variety into the game. How many versions of Agora have there been? I liked some of the originals before they got changed. Eclipse keeps changing too. Remember what Triad used to look like? You could see the RT from the walkway. There wasn't nearly as much grief for the marines trying to take Sloop, since there was only one vent into the room, and the aliens had to have maint to use it. So on and so forth.

A lot of variety is a good thing.

    RE: More maps plz? Eventually?

My favorite three are Hera, Lost, and then Bast (yes bast, it's a beautiful map and works well with a few people)

I'd love to see something still which is designed specifically for jetpacker vs. lerk&fade arial combat. Large open air spaces with lots of nooks n'crannies for you to fly though and sneak arround are fun.

PS: my insistent relocation to double in mineshaft (when hive is in sewer) is why some call me the "crazy comm" but when the marines stop bitchin & ramboing andactually follow my orders they are often shocked by a swift victory. I typically don't like to play mineshaft because the only secure way of victory for rines is a two hive lock down with double or a hive as the base.

The simple answer as always.... if you can do better....

As for maps, I'm a huge fan of bast, and hera. Both are excellent fun, and have a distinct feel.

Mineshaft is interesting because it encourages a change in tactics. You can't just hope Onos will save the day as aliens, and for Marines suddenly HA become much more viable. It's just how quick your comm is to adjust.

metal has pretty large rooms........ and i dont think it's that bad. sure it's marine-biased, but so is eclipse or veil.

lost is very nice too, but the triple-res is a little funny. as is the weldable rt. and the siegeroom :D but still its a fun map.

    Anyone know who created the original <a href='http://www.planetfortress.com/jmcstfmapzone/tfc2fort.htm' target='_blank'>2fort</a>? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

google keeps giving me junk and noe of the other search engines will help either. In the 2fort.txt is just says "Valve" which is like -_- because we know someone person must have made it, not the company.

Just curious because I can't find it anywhere which is odd.

PS: if anyone has an .rmf of this map I'd love to make it into a combat map for NS.

    co_2fort

and like put the hive & CC in the flag rooms and res nodes spread arround evenly but otherwise exactly the same. That would be soo sweet.

2fort's design is a rather uncomplicated couple of boxes, wouldn't be hard to remake, theres more then a few remakes out there.

About ns_romana, its interesting that it would just disappear. Looks like it took a while to make :/. You'd think that he'd finish it or release it <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->.

Yea but anyone got the 2fort.rmf or 2fort.map file?

There an old 2.0 version for NS but it works poorly as a regular NS style map but it would work beautifully as a combat map beacuse of it's symmetric properties that make it so ballance. For that matter many of the original TFC maps would work well in Combat.

    Hmm...

Well some one just grab me the old TFC .rmf's and I'll give you all new combat maps in a flash. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Dustbowl could be crazy and canal zone could be as simple as swaping out the command points with res nodes.

I know exactly where all the res nodes should go in 2fort provided on how many you need: just put them in all the good SG spots.

so that means one on each battlement. One in the first floor room or second floor where the Sg's usu go (except don't be stupid and put them on the ramps) on in each flag room and one in each elevator room. Or you could get creative and remove the spawn room doors. Muhahaha

    ~ edit~

actually now that I think about it there isn't a good TFC map that wouldn't be able to be a good conversion for NS combat. Heck why not even convert those really old HLDM maps I used to play for hours afterschool? Thinking about it more... maps like cornfield for TFC would be crazy with wall walking skulks. <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo--> The damn thing would keep hopping arround on the roofs and stuff and I can already see gorges hiding chambers in the cornfield.

In my opinion most tfc maps would be awful if they were converted into ns maps (combat or classic). Symmetry(sp?) does not work with teams that are not identical.

Care to elaborate or do you just like trolling?

Ok maybe not all but let me make some and prove you wrong. I'm pretty goood about flow design. Yes I know the teams in NS are kind of asymmetrical but they are also well balanced.

It will be an interesting experiment and snide anti-creativity creates no progress... who knows it might work out well on certain maps.

(thinking of genome or even mooncheese as humorous examples.)

no offence, but... dont let him near those files.

cmon, make something original and NSishim sick and tired of stupid csmapremakes
we dont need tfcmapremakes, i wouldent mind if you made one from scratch useing the ns.wad and creating a diffrent map thats similer.

now im happy my HDexploded, saves me the time of deleting them...

Hey stop going of topic! anyway this map from barney was released before 1.04 I remember wonder if was in beta builds of 1.0?
  • MetoMeto Join Date: 2004-04-26 Member: 28216Members
valve was still an unknown company when 2fort came about. It's ancestory lies in team fortress (for quake) and was one of the earliest tf maps. The author released the sourcecode (e.g. .map) so that anyone could edit it and a thousand and one variants popped up.

The same is true for a lot of tfc maps such as well6 and rock.

In TF they loved putting numbers in map names <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> so you can easily find 2fort, 2fort4, 2fort8, 2fort32, 2fort3 blah blah blah...

Team Fortress & TFC's map style put the important places in the map (flag & cap points) in different locations from where the players spawn. NS Combat lumps them all together. Which is more fun? I know I don't prefer NS:C.

Personally TFC's symetric maps are the most boring things I've ever played. Which I guess is why I don't like TFC.

The only map that would be funn to try as a combat map would be dustbowl, but aliens would have to defend because aliens would get pwned tryingt o get out of those wholes... It would be just like the real dustbowl, nade spam everywhere for the frist 3 mins each door is open.... :-(

All the rest would be terrible unless you added alot of infestation to the alien side, with some room destroyed... or blocked by debrie... With heavy modifications it could be cool, perhaps if it was redone after a medeor strike or something... Alien space craft crashed?

Best senarior is to make something completely different that is inspired by one of these maps...
