<div class="IPBDescription">Fileplanet guys...</div> Okay, so FP people get into the closed beta for this.
And MAN is it fun. I thought it'd be a UT2k4 clone or something, and I couldn't be more wrong. The weapons feel perfect, combat is great, the levels are attractive. Screenshots to be posted later, but anyone else in the beta?

I really hate not being able to afford a Subscriber account at times.
Not that someone who can get a TV key couldn't get a WoW key anyway <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Actually, quite a lot of the really hardcore gaming crowd pay, just because it is a honest-to-God-great service. Its not just downloading early- its getting exclusives, special chances(like for one, I was one of the VERY VERY few that got the REALLY REALLY early beta stuff for Ground Control 2), not to mention a place that is a very reliable download source, unlike Bittorrent or the such. And actually- its not 80 a year either. Thats for founder's club- just fp is 50 I believe, may be less.
<span style='font-size:14pt;line-height:100%'><span style='color:red'>Does it stay true to Tribes and T2?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!</span></span>
Well, I never tried tribes 1, and Tribes 2 to me felt like utter crap.
But I think this one is different enough that I *REALLY* like it. MP is fast and frenzy-like, yet, teamwork is used. I remember a assault I accidently joined, of a ton of us imperials on winterlake hitting the right side(our left) of their base and just pelting it with disks, and then fighting with those that came to get us. Meanwhile, 3 of ours went and stole their flag. At the end of that match, EVERY SINGLE PERSON on the other team(wow!) said that, that was the coolest tactic they'd ever seen used in a random pub game.
Really, with all the things that are insanely fun with this, the only thing I'd say wrong is: Buggy vehicles(but by no means "worthless"), loadouts not loading with you, ragdoll bugs galore, and the big one: Automatically disconnecting you from the server when the match ends.
The main problems are the ones that are obvious, such as getting stuck on something invisible. I like a lot of the stuff now in the game, but there are some things that need to be fixed / tweaked. Jumping, imo, should be a lot higher so you can get a head start on the jet packing.
Chip in between a load of your friends and share it
Bleh.
It's incredibly cartoony, the game is impossible to take seriously now. First of all, the vehicles are rediculous. They look like toys. The jump tank looks like your basic tank. But it has this stupid huge 'jets' to pop out of the back Men In Black style. The treads have these goofy spikes on them, the entire thing just looks rediculous. Then there's the fighter sphere, which is literally a roll cage with a gun, and like 10 massive rockets on it. I almost cried when I saw it.
It doesn't feel like you're in an intergalactic war anymore. It feels like you're playing a video game. 'Features' like the inability to pilot vehicles in a first person perspective really ruin it like that.
They've also built-in some scripts from Tribes/Tribes2 like jump/jet, but jump is so pathetically short the jump really doesn't do anything, and skiing is laughably easy now, to the point where you can ski on almost any surface imaginable. I don't thnk I've ever noticed a single player shadow cast. Some of the weapon effects are nice, the new spinfusor explosion is pretty neat, but others like the 'Burner' is just a big ugly cloud of huge orange particles. The fire effect doesn't even look nice, it's a fire-textured particle effect.
They've made base defense a chore now, and given mappers a bit of flexibility with how they want defenses set up, and on some maps you get only three mines and two turrets, on another you get about a dozen turrets and three mines. But the trick is that you have to run all around grabbing each one and putting it into place, which can be pretty laborious.
There's a neat new weapon too, the Buckler. It's basically a tiny little energy shield for the medium armor. It DOES block attacks, but the catch is, it only protects your front, and it's so tiny, I think only automated defenses that target my player origin (which is roughly right behind the shield) actually hit it. You can't position your arm and raise the shield higher, no, you always hold it in the same spot. I just wish it was a bit bigger :/
I have to get to class now, but this game is only sub-par, not a super groundbreaking title, not in the least.

UT2k4 was a Tribes clone; you've got it backwards.
Personally I couldn't care less if it was Tribes 1 with better graphics. In fact, I'd be all the happier. They do seem to have made changes, though, and now I have to hunt down and murder someone with a Fileplanet subscription. Excuse me.

If I wanted Tribes 1, I'd play Tribes 1.
Edit: and Eek, I don't think you were ever supposed to take Tribes seriously. SHAZBOT! and the funky chicken dance come to mind.
Did I mention how they raped and ruined all the packs too? Shield pack, for example, no longer feeds off your energy reserve - no, it's just a fixed length shield effect that turns on (for like 3 seconds) then has to 'recharge'. It's horribly stupid.
The gameplay is well.... Tribes. New weapons vehicles. Pretty graphics. Nothing really new (though the grappel kicks butt).
However, the 'sticky' bug. If you play the beta you know what it is, kills the gameplay.
I run a 2 Ghz 768MB ram and gainward goldenseal 4200ti. And it hates me when I try anything beyond 1280x1024 and low graphics. It is probably just a bug at the moment, but it really drives me nuts.
Well that's what I said, it's ONLY useful against turrets since they shoot at the center of your player model. Actual players shoot whatever they can, they're not led by an AI telling them 'shoot at 0,0,0 of player 'X'.
I know what Heavy Defense is for tard****, but I'm saying that they made static defenses a CHORE to set up, and on one of the maps you have a decent hike to deploy them. For a fast paced game, you have to run in, find the right terminal slot, get the full one, hike back, toss it down, run back in, etc. Plus, each terminal is destroyable, so that's just **** you have to repair later.
That said, I found it REALLY dissapointing that you only carry 3 weapons, no matter what your armor class is. That's actually a major downside, I think, for heavy armors. They should at least get four. Also a big 'boooo' for only having one grenade type. No whiteouts? No concs? <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I didn't notice having to lead a target. It still is a laser rifle, but it's also ammo-fed. Irrational hates snipers. So you fire a round, lose all your energy which powers the shot, and can only do that like 10 times. Or 5. Whatever it was.
The good side is I think the weapons are pretty well balanced. The blaster is a shotgun-type weapon now, and does a horrendous amount of damage to base objects (too much, IMO). However, the weapons tend to 'shoot low' and will hit objects (like railings and sandbags) that are in front of you, so be very very careful when firing from behind cover of sort, most likely you'll blow yourself up.
I have been treating the laser rifle as a laser and I have been missing some shots that I know I did not miss. It might be lag, bugs, or whatever. But I will be quite angry if I have to lead a laser.
Okay, but I was really good.
