<div class="IPBDescription">not just abandonware; legally free stuff</div> Credits once again to <a href='http://slashdot.org' target='_blank'>/.</a>, where I first read about this. There's a new (but thanks to the recent slashdottage, likely-to-quickly-grow) website called <a href='http://www.liberatedgames.com' target='_blank'>Liberated Games</a>. You know how companies have been releasing commercial-quality games for free recently, like Hidden & Dangerous 1, Ground Control 1, and Tribes 1 &2? This site's planning on keeping a listing of all of those with download links and such.
I've heard several people here say games like Star Control 2 and Marathon were particularly good. Are any of the lesser-known items on the list here good enough to give a real try?

Grand Theft Auto(#1 is so much better than #2 <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->- the city is great)
Homeworld
Quake
Quake II
TES: Arena(endless?)
Freespace 2(GOD!)
Duke Nukem 3D
DOOM
DOOM 2
Descent
Descent 2
These are all awesome games. And while I *would* say H&D, the control and aiming scheme is just crap, not to mention the "I am God" AI that can snipe you with a MG from across a 300 meter long bridge through 4 steel pillars.

Star control 2 will blow you away. The most awesome storyline, and one of the only games I can honestly say I laughed my way through (intentionally) as it never took itself too seriously.
The dialogue was excellent, the replayability top notch.... brilliant, brilliant, brilliant game.

<edit>Sigh... some of the game, like AvP, aren't the games, just the Source Code.</edit>

H&D was notoriously buggy when it first came out. Maybe the free version is unpatched. If so, it ought to be prettt simple to patch it up and fix the bugs.
The most annoying thing ever are the tanks, especially in FfF. I can't even see them, they are behind a friggin hill, and still they manage to blow up my entire squad with perfect accuracy.
Heck, even the cheats are crap. You can get every weapon, but only 100 shots for each (which is a bit pointless with a MG). You can revive dead squad-members, but if they were killed by a grenade, any limbs (arms, legs, head) might be missing and they'll be unable to run and/or hold a weapon. Not to mention that the camera is buggy then, locking it to the ground where the person died.
It's strange that they don't make the first Wolf3D freeware while they lose millions to the Doom 3 warez... way to be harsh with the nostalgic loyal fans.
Resource management, fighting, diplomacy, mystery, exploration, a storyline you can crack your skull with due to it's inherent thickness, hours upon hours of tireless dialogue that exposits the game world to you without boring the heck out of you, humourful and unique.
It's not just an RPG. It's a frigging way of life. Quite simply the Best. Game. Ever.

Also, if you look about on their forums, theres a project underway called Aftermath. Also well done, and all worked on by a single person. If you like Star Control, give Aftermath a shot.
By the way, a tidbit of the first convo you get in SC2

This drone-vessel speaks with the voice and authority of the Ur-Quan.
You are trespassing within Ur-Quan space.
This world, Earth, may not be approached for any reason.
Nor will hostilities against our orbital platform be tolerated.
In addition, your ship does not respond to standard Hierarchy identification transmissions
and is therefore deemed to be independent.
This is not permissible -- only subservience shall be tolerated.
This drone now leaves to inform the Ur-Quan of your transgressions.
You are commanded to remain here and await the arrival of the Ur-Quan.
Disobedience will be punished.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Urge to play SC2. Rising.
Aye, same here.

Just the linux source though. Not really the whole game.
Besides... having the source would be interesting it's like; "heres how we made this and if you can be bothered you too now can!!!" lol <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

It's sort of like following a bunch of signs that say "Free cars!" and ending up with a box containing all the neccesary parts.
Models, stats, everything.
Source code is just a lot of letters, numbers, and symbols. No graphics.
