you downloaded the source, didn't you. Well, don't. Go back to the site and look for the Ur-Quan Masters site link, and click on it. The first download you see on that site is a link to the windows auto-installer for win32.

Conveniently enough, the win32 installer comes with a .txt named "Manual," and a shortcut is made to it along with the game's shortcut in the start menu

Yea, I've been looking for a manual for the game.

I've found arrow keys move your selection (and move your ship kinda like asteroids), but then there's some stuff I just can't know about the game.

    Enter - selects
    keypad 0 - cancel/back
Escape - return to ship from landing
Shift - Fire in combat/during planetory exploration

There has to be other controls and information. I just don't know where it is. It's kind of weird. And I'd also like to know how I can know if a planet will be safe to land on. Venus (would obviously) destroys stuff quick, so does the Lanthanide world or something in the Sirius orbit...I'd like to know if it's temperature based (I saw the Lenthanide World was 1000 degrees C + ) or something else.

Basically: any manual or gameplay controls, description or premise would be nice.
[from what I've managed to drag out of it so far is pretty fun]

    Heh,

Bag yourself a whole bunch of alien lifeforms, then have a talk with these guys:

Until then, you're not going to be going very far visiting hostile planets. When you reach a planet, it will give you stats about weather and tectonics; anything with a really high class should be avoided for the moment. Go for the easy stuff.

Truly was a fun game. I still have the original DOS version...

how do you save in this star control game?!
  • CronosCronos Join Date: 2002-10-18 Member: 1542Members
Hit F10, cycle through the menu until you get to a panel called "Games" and hit enter. You will then have a choice between saving and loading a game.

    Tips for Nubs:

Dont land on planets with 200 Degree ++ weather. The hotspots hurt. Alot.

Dont land on planets with more then level 4 lightning unless there are lots of juicy metals down there.

Dont land on planets with more then level 5 or 6 earthquakes depending on how well you handle the planet lander. Earthquakes are in general more manageable then hotspots or lightning.

Clean out the solar system. Every damn planet EXCEPT FOR VENUS!

Venus is crap planet to land on. All it has are a few common elements, which are nigh on worthless.

In order of value, go for these elements

Light Blue - Common. Each "Unit" is worth only one RU. So, if you filled your hold full of these babies (say, you have 500 units of space in the hold) you would only get 500 RU from the trip. Considering each unit of fuel costs 20 RU, it simply wouldnt be that economical. If you see these, only mine them if you want to fill your hold and your on the way home, and the fuel cost isnt too prohibitive and the weather conditions are fairly quiescient.

Red - Corrosive elements. These are better and are found on halide worlds. They are worth 2 RU per unit. So, a 500 unit hold will bring back 1000 RU. Better, but still crap.

Grey - Base Metals. Base metals are found on a variety of worlds, from earthlike planets to "Selenic" worlds. Base metals are probably the one of the most common of the "valuable" things worth mining. They're worth 3 RU per unit and a hold of 500 units rakes in 1500 RU. Base metals are usually worth the trip unless there are extraordinary weather conditions.

Blue - Noble Gases. These are much better. They are found most often on "Noble" worlds and Ultramarine worlds, though they may also be found on Flourescent worlds as well. They are usually worth the trip and are worth 4 RU per unit. I'm fairly sure you can do the math here. Be wary though, sometimes the Ultramarine worlds can have a bit of lightning with them, so watch it.

Green - Rare Earth. Rare earth elements are found, as someone has mentioned, on Lanthanide worlds but are also found on Green worlds. These elements are worth 5 RU a pop and can be worth the trip, weather permitting.

Yellow/Gold - Precious. Do you like gold? You will when you read this. Gold elements are worth 6 RU per unit. They are found most commonly on Treasure or Auric worlds, but are sometimes found on Plutonic worlds. A Mysterious kind of world found only in mycon space may also harbour these precious minerals as well as a plethora of base and radioactives. If you find these, mine them. They are definitely worth it and you should take reasonable risks to get at them.

Orange - Radioactives. These are worth 8 RU a pop. If you see them, grab them. They are the highest rated and are amongst the most common of the "higher" elements. Found on halide or radioactive, less common but still present on metal worlds.

Purple - Exotic. Wow. Just. Wow. Exotics are worth 25 RU PER UNIT and are worth almost any risk to mine. They are found on such wondrous worlds as Sapphire Worlds, or Ruby Worlds, some have been found on the wondrous Emerald Worlds. They are also found in isolated locations on frozen worlds, albeit in trace quantities. If you see them, grab em. Dump the common elements over the side to make room if need be, just grab them. Rumour has it that an old miner hid a cache of some of these exotics, known as "Tzo Crystals" which could predict the future. It was never known WHERE he hid this cache, only that it was within the system and that his journeys were longer then most (hint hint).

Now that you know about minerals, on to the modules.

Your flagship is highly modular. You can customize her to almost any purpose, with the right tech. You can make her a battlecruiser or a mass hauler. Whatever your heart desires.

First things first, get some more cargo modules. Go into the "Outfit starship" panel.

From here you can refuel your flagship, most of you will have figured this out easily enough. Flagship customization can take place here by scrolling left or right without hitting enter on the fuel panel. You'll get an option of exiting the menu, modules, or saving your game. Hit modules.

You can put in crew pods, that increase the number of crew your flagship can carry, or extra fuel tanks that increase your range.

The most notable thing for the nearby starclusters though will be cargo space. You want to fill this thing to the brim with cargo, and the more cargo bays you have the more cargo you can lug about. Fill it to the brim, ditch the ion cannon if you want (you wont need it as long as you have escort ships).

Eventually you will collect technology that will allow you to make your humble stellar freighter into a dreadnought with almost no match in the quadrant (hint at the "almost" part ).

From this screen you can also add thrusters and turning jets. These are useful in that it makes your flagship much much more manouverable and faster then a veritable slug. Very handy.

Also, if your prone to losing landers, you can replace them here (for a cost though).

From the shipyard you can replace crew lost from ships for a cost of RU. You can also manufacture new vessels for your fleet from here. You can also build allied ships from here, once you've made an alliance of course.

If you lose too many people to battles, slave traders or inclement weather, the crew cost WILL rise, but if your decent enough you can keep it at the default value and as you get better you may find a way of lowering the crew RU cost.

    Further tips.

There is a set of worlds, like no other. There are only ten of them in the game, and they allude to a secret. Find these worlds. They are valuable to those that seek them, and often contain some nice elements as well.

A set of green stars heralds riches beyond your wildest imagination, and terrors beyond comprehension.

    AVOID THE CENTRE.

Lastly, dont dawdle. There is a timelimit, and if you dont make at least SOME headway, the consequences will be dear. Very dear.

    Finally:

Meet up with a friend in the ALPHA CENTAURI system. If you dont see his vessel going about, check the planets. He should be oribiting one of them.

DELTA CENTAURI may be in hostile territory, but it has riches, both quantitative and qualitative.

    Hopefully this was informative

Yep. But dont go into his home space. As he mentioned his ship was damaged. His bretheren will be tougher cookies to crack, and the fact that they have cloaking devices doesnt help. Steer clear if Ilwrathi space if you can.

Gawd I'm jealous of these kids who've just d/l starcon 2 - I wish I could wipe my memory so I could enjoy the fresh goodness again. The joy of recreating the Shofixti, the hilariousness of the Spathi, and the cold, cold evil of the Ur-Quan.

Just a tip for later on - when insulted in the Starcon universe - it is generally advisable to respond at the same level
