Where Would You Move?

eedioteediot Join Date: 2003-02-24 Member: 13903Members
<div class="IPBDescription">And why?</div> If you could, where would you move to [as a new home]? Things to consider:

Weather - storms, rain, droughts, [earthquakes etc will be bundled in here], heat, cold
Cost of living - rent, mortgage, high priced food, water and gas, etc
Infrastructure - Las vegas as opposed to a shack in the middle of Western Australia.. you all know what infrastructure is <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Career options - General stuff, not "ive been given a job offering in kansas". for eg film industry is better in hollywood than it is in australia
Contacts - do you have the guts to move to a place where you know NOBODY?
Community - the general quality of the community, be it angry ethnic mobs, or hot girls/guys, or a whole lot of old people [florida?]
Communications - What's the point of moving somewhere if you can't get a 200 Gigabit line for $12 a month, as well as free cable TV ? <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Anyway, so yeah, based on all that, where would you like to move to (giving reasons)?

Based on my limited stereotyped knowledge, im favouring los angeles, california... but then again i have no idea. It seems hot, apparently has good girls, it's on the coastline, internet should be decent.. but i have no idea about communications, career options [film industry], infrastructure or cost of living. or earthquakes.

I and my GF always said we'd move to New Zealand one day... it's so beautiful and remote, and yet it's not exactly cut off from civilization...

3 yrs ago I move from Minnesota to Northern California... knew nobody - the biggest positives are the weather and 'standing on my own feet'. However I am more than ready to move back.

So if I could move ANYWHERE I wanted it would be a suburb of the Twin Cities in Minnesota. There I will have friends again, 4 whole seasons, family, and best of all familiarity.

I'd move to Seattle, but I live there so it's sort of a moot point. Advantages: all the good hi-tech companies, like Microsoft, Nintendo, or Valve are close by, I can run to Canada quickly if the US ever gets itself into a nuclear war, the weather agrees with me, and it's relatively (relatively!) pollution free, because the weather that brings in so much rain helps to sweep away air pollution.

Not very adventurous but I'd just want to move into a flat in town here in Edinburgh with a bundle of good friends =3

    I'd love to visit Canada, Japan, etc but live there? I dunno... tell you sometime if I ever get around to holidaying there ^^;

I might go very wrong with all of this and screw my life up, but... Lol.

My real aim (not just speculation) is to move to Canada, once I finish school and amass a bit of money. Why? Nature, a new way of life and for some reason, I'm tired of Europe. *shrug* And a few other reasons.

Well, at first I was thinking Antravtica but then I was thinking 'No way, it's colder than my room, and my room already gives you colds'

So I might be thinking of maybe Europe or US. Failing those, Japan. I don't mind losing my life to an earthquake, because it happens anyway <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

North Dakota. Cold, pretty, and there aren't many people you'd have to deal with.

    Chicago.

Great food, great music, a great city.

As for you, eediot, Los Angeles usually encompases roughly 60 BILLION cities <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> I lived in Huntington Beach and still say I'm from LA.

Just a note to those people saying 'Moving to X because of scenery'. Remember that 1) Scenery doesn't pay the bills, and 2) Scenery DOES wear off. I spent about six months living in some hodunk town on the border of Minnesota/Canada, and thought "Wow it's pretty" for the first couple months, then stopped caring, then wanted to leave because the mosquitos sucked so bad.

    Sweden. What a country.

/Edit : Taxes are high, but public services are excellent.
Also I love the weather and the ski resorts rock. Go Åre! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I know a few people over there and know the very basics of the language. That's my only real hurdle.

If I could manage to find a job, Hawaii sounds nice (vulcanology sounds okay, but geology isn't very fun <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> ). Stuff costs twice as much, the threat of typhoons and tsunamis is immenient and volcanoes can burn down your house. It'd just be the whole...finding a job that's not boring/completely minimum wage. Barring that, somewhere where it rains a lot that could conform with an available job.

I'd go with somewhere in northern Germany too...but I don't think my German is quite up to day to day standards yet <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> .

I must agree I would love to do that.

Although I'm going in to the British Army then hopefully some sort of civil service division. So it would be 40 or even 50 by the time I'm able to move out to Canada.

Canada is always a possibility, but if we were just talking about the US, I would say Ohio. Because Ohio is geek motherland.

I would stay right where I am.

No floods, major tornados, quakes, or any other natural disaster.

One of the most 'free' locations in the world.

    Beautiful countryside.

    1.5 hours from NYC
    0.5 hours from Philly
    2.0 hours from DC

Very low crime (in certain areas)

Low cost of living. (those of you who want to move to LA,DC,NYC,Japan should watch out)

History (Valley Forge, Gettisburg, Independance Hall, etc)

I have a kickass job in Valley Forge

And I have to say it again, the beauty of the land. If you want to imagine what the countryside is like where I live, imagine Tolkien's Shire.

Why on Earth would I want to move? Now a vacation is a different story.

    <span style='font-size:14pt;line-height:100%'>
Oh yeah, and I live 20 minutes from Delaware. NO SALES TAX</span>

Canada, because the whole feeling of the country is similar to the US, except for a few things (currency, metric system, celsius) and the people are generally more laid-back. Plus, I could have a dog sled team (omg Huskies =D =D ) to ferry me around my Yukon town.

California, Hawaii, or Colorado. All beautiful, and I'm a surfer, so HI and CA would be kick ****, huge huge waves. Colorado, I could put down the surfboard and pick up snowboarding, and its beautiful there. Always something to do.

See Washington? See that part that sticks out on the left? That forms a long, skinny bit of water. See that? Seattle is on the right shore of that water.

It's a great place. We've got stuff like Realplayer and the Penny Arcade Expo here.

    What's the community/cost of living/weather like?
  • TychoCelchuuuTychoCelchuuu Anememone Join Date: 2002-03-23 Member: 345Members
Nice community as far as I'm concerned. The Northwest has a bit of a reputation as a haven for tree huggers, though, in case the occasional environmentalist makes you mad. Cost of living depends upon where you live really, but the job market to cost ratio isn't so hot right now. That's not a problem if you get a good job though. Weather is rain, rain, some clouds, LOOK SUN oh wait false alarm, it's actually rain.

You're right about internet though. So many companies to choose from.

I would suggest you check out Southern Colorado/Northern New Mexico.

That area is the most beautiful land I have ever seen. (traveled most of the US and Europe)
