The Mighty Aliens

lets take a look at the alien fighter roster:

skulk: basic scout unit, with powerful melee attack capabilities
lerk: basic flying hit and run scout unit, with a special annoying ranged gas attack
fade: advanced hit and run scout unit, with the ability to quickly flee from battle
onos: the ultimate hit and run unit, with the ability to freeze his enemies in order to aid his escape

Aliens can bunny hop, marines can't

Aliens suck in long halls, but excel at close range.
Marines own long halls, but aren't as good at close range, because the freaking skulk is jumping around like jack russel terrier... CALIGO ANGRY

The game is pretty muched as balanced as it can get... The thing I don't like is it's basically a rock paper scissors type game no matter what you do... Heavies are countered by onos, which is countered by JP, which is countered by lerk, which is countered by heavies again...

Sure, Zek, but as the marines are slower, and have the anti bunny hopping thing, it's easier for the skulk...

And I said BASICALLY a rock paper scissors type game...
Lerks aren't the perfect counter to JP... they help a lot with spores and biting and flying... I suppose fades would make a better counter with the acid rocket, and ability to blink to the Jet packer....

It's pretty easy for a vanilla marine to jump around and dodge attacks by skulks/lerks/fades. knockback > you

skulk: If your not in the spawn queue, you soon will be.
gorge: That alien you be for the 5 seconds it takes to build things.
lerk: Never stop sporing until they have HA
fade: Providing you avoid getting stuck on map architecture, you will never die.
ono: Stomp marine, attempt to devour, fail, repeat process, die to lmg fire. Promise you will go fade instead next map.

I find fading gets rid of basicly anything, a good fade can harrass a group of HA's maybe 1-2 swipes each turn before he has to flee, but 1 fade can really slow a ha train down untill there's a onos on the scene.

Skulk: A basic, if slightly weak, melee unit. Good for scouting, best used in ambush when engagement must occur, parasite is your best friend until hive 2, and I'd still recommend heavy useage of it. Can actually be quite deadly if you've got leap, and/or never miss your bites.

Gorge: A builder. Will die anywhere near the frontlines. It's useful to heal up smaller classes (skulks, other gorges, lerks) behind the action, and in last-chance situations can be used to aid combat.

Lerk: Support. Spores and umbra are your primary weapons. If it's by itself, it still has the ability to hold its own with bite.

Fade: Anti-personel. In proper hands, requires lots of teamwork and expensive weaponry to take down. Alien class that lets your skill shine through the most. Lacks at building-destroying capibility, but is your best bet for any early elec RT's.

Onos: A specialized base breaking class. Everything about it should be played by the numbers. No lone marine without a JP has any chance of killing it, but it dies to mass amounts of firepower relitivly quickly. Must be used with care. Quite hard to take down at a hive, and should be regarded as a threat.

Skulk : Weak melee attack unit, small but fast.
Lerk : Flying skulk.
Fade : The only half decent used class in the game, good fade can normally throw the tide of a game
Onos : Big skulk.

Gorge : Builds rt's... not really good for much else.

from the marines' point of view:

skulk: annoying little f-cker that walks on ceilings and walls, high on caffeine so it will never ever ever be able to sit still for even a split second, decent attacks but dies pretty easily

gorge: fat structure spammer with almost no offensive capabilities but too cute to kill. especially when it hops like a bunny. respected by all fellow aliens because it gives them all the upgrades.

lerk: spore-puking umbra-spitting flying skulk. slighty less annoying as it can't walk on ceilings and walls, will sit still a lot more often to shoot crap at marines. a bit tougher than a skulk, but usually easier to kill

fade: 3 level-3 shotgun marines compressed into one close-ranged fighting unit. lots of hp and armor, self-regenerating and close to impossible to kill as it blinks away (after killing one of your teammates) every half second or so.

onos: target practise. will occasionally eat one of your temamates and run a way like it only has 100 hitpoints. if you see one of these, laugh and kill it. if you see 3 or more of these, start crying and press f4.

Aliens are focused on melee combat and hit-and-run? Could be. This might also be one of those fancy methods of you trying to prove a point when there isn't really one unless you state what is incorrect with this.

Coma clearly hasn't fought a good lerk, or a good onos in a while.

If we make the aliens invincible, then the marines can't win. If we make the aliens difficult to kill singly, at all, then the marines won't win if there is any teamwork whatsoever involved. Please remember that we are balancing for both single people and and teams that work together. Sure, one onos is not a huge threat, but that's only because you have five people shooting him. What, would happen if you have an onos using stomp to disrupt your marines while a lerk umbras him and you are killed by a small group of skulks? That's teamwork. Clearly, you fail to realise that balancing things isn't as simple as "MAKE FADES AND ONOS INVINCIBLE BECAUSE THEY COST LOTS OF RES LOL".

Skulk: Small thin piece of paper. easy to mow down with anything, even with knives.
Gorge: Fat piece of paper. Moves slowly, occasionally doing the 'bunnyhop'. shoots crap at you for minimal damage. good for knifing practice.
Lerk: Irritating flying piece of paper that farts green poison gas and bullet-catching yellow gas. shotgun and above mows them down.
Fade: Paper that never dies. Blinks in and out and annoys the **** out of you. teams of shotguns and above mows them down.
Onos. Big piece of cardboard for target practice. Crawls around and 'magically' makes single marines disappear into thin air. Makes loud noises and stuns marines for a fraction of a second when confronted. Occasionally gets high on crack and runs around, dealing minimal damage. Gets mown down by anything when something is blocking its path.

There, your very own "guide to origami kharaa".

Skulk - Paper thin units that's not good for anything during midgames except eating the RTs.
Gorge - Fatsos who can be pretty annoying if they gang up vs LMGs.
Lerks - Hard as hell to hit who pancackes as soon as they start to take damage. Very annoying and lethal when confronted along with higher life-forms.
Fades - Only viable unit (not including onos) when confronting marines right on.
Onos - Meat shield with the ability to stomp. Useless at hive 1, very useful at hive 2.

The problem is early game marines are greater than early game aliens. It is perfectly possible for half a team to put pressure on the aliens while the other half..or even a lone marine secures the rest of the map. Aliens rely on the skill of a single player...assumed to be at the very least a lerk to stop this. Skulks do not have a chance to stop such expansion on their own or even in pairs and diverting more skulks away from the main battle is not an option.
In this way games are decided by these one on one battles for control of the rest of the map while the main fight happens elsewhere.
I fully agree that aliens useing teamwork would be impossible to beat if they were any stronger but the crucial battles are still fought one on one.

Thats why running straight at the marine down a long hallway during a 1v1 confrontation is a bad idea. Gotta be sneaky, and wait for a nub to come whistling down the hallway spamming the taunt voiceover and nail him.
• BlueeBluee Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 6286Members
They really need to soup the Onos up. I dunno, put more restrictions to obtain him, but he really needs to be tougher. 2 marines with HMGs abusing map architecture to avoid the Onos = dead Onos.

The only creatures that have ever won a game are fades and rarely lerks. Gorges have saved games (omg lame), onos have finished off games.
