The Box, Or Steam?

once HL2 goes retail
That is the question. If you plan on picking up HL2, will you be buying it via steam, or do you want to buy it from a retail location, with the full box?

I have been actualy thinking about this recently (especialy after people's comments about Steam making publishers obsoleate). I for one will probably NOT be buying it via Steam as I like manuals, boxes, and CDs. I expecialy don't like the idea of shelling out $60 some odd for the decryption to a file already on my computer, and nothing else. When I buy the box I atleast feel like I got SOMETHING.

So thoughts, comments? What are you going to do?

Box, due to Steam downtime fears on release day.

Steam, because I love the concept of it.

The box for me, but only because I'm still on 56k. Still, it will be interesting to see how much of a discount there will be if you get it via Steam.

Daed: They will nopt likely have a discount via steam as they are generaly not alowed to undercut their distributers.

On an update, I would buy the box, nab the CDKey and then install HL2 through steam ussing said CD key (specialy seeing how as we already have a good portion of HL2 on our computers )

The box. Manuals, CDs and all that good stuff, are.. well.. GOOD.
I mean, with CDs I can install and play it on any computer I come across (assuming the computer will run it and I have the CDs) Steam.. Well, Its on MY computer.. the problem here would be if I'm not currently at said computer...

On Steam because I got my ATI coupon, but I would either way. It just seems so stupid that we have these games, which are just ones and zeros, but we are forced to buy them on a little plastic slab. I mean, we can do better than this. You're telling me we have high speed internet but the only way for me to get something that is going to end up on my computer either way is to go to the store, buy it, then copy it on to my hard drive? Why the heck can't we cut out the middleman and just download the thing? Steam is finally a step in the right direction.

I think the release of HL2 over Steam will be a great experiment in this type of publishing. If all goes well we might begin to see more small developers release games this way. They could pay Valve to use their content servers and to advertise their game on Steam. This will give smaller developers a lot more coverage for a much smaller cost.

Am I being realistic or is this too far fetched?

    soooo

instead of having a publisher that distributes via stores everywhere
they have a publisher that only distributes via one "store"?

    Not going to happen.

Well I'm talking small developers that are trying to get themselves noticed.

Get the box, use the CD key to install through Steam.
  • ThansalThansal The New Scum Join Date: 2002-08-22 Member: 1215Members, Constellation
yah, but how can they pay vavle to let them use Steam witho ut the $$ in the first place?

Remember, Valve puts up mods for free b/c that increases THEIR user base.

In the box. I plan on nuking my computer quite regularly now and I do not want have to re-download the game every single time I do that. Besides, I pre-ordered it on Amazon and got £15 off (including delivery). Same with The Sims 2.

Steam is a proof of concept program. Valve will certainly do a certain amount of sales through steam, but I doubt that it will really dent what will be sold through retail. I would expect that throughout the next year, the percentage amount of people purchasing through Steam will increase dramatically as gamers and prospective gamers feel more comfortable using the program.

If you'll remember back to the late 1990's, when internet purchasing was just beginning to take hold, many people were saying "it's the death of retail" and other people were saying "it will never take hold." If you'll notice both were wrong.
  • DaedalusDaedalus Join Date: 2003-04-02 Member: 15152Members
True, but having other games available via Steam would also increase their user base. At the moment they have a lot of the FPS market captured, but there are many other genres out there.

Also, publishing over Steam would mean the majority of profit made goes straight back to the developer instead of into the publisher's pocket.

Of course this was just a crazy idea I had only a few minutes ago and it might not even be practical. I think I'll shut up now and let the thread get back on topic

Unless it's discounted on steam, I'll get the box...
Unless it's sold-out at the store, I'll get it off steam...

    No pre-ordering for me

Box myself. But being I'm preloading it, I'm gonna get it, come home, and just go to the Browse Games list, and "Register my Game" so I can just start playing without installation.

Maybe you should name and shame the company in question.

If you live in the UK i recommend gameplay.co.uk

    Svenpa:
alot of key files are missing from the preload, so it dosn't matter (probably) if you can crack the files as they still will not work.

I hate the concept of exclusively downloadable on-demand content. Not because I think Valve's no-publisher ambitions are evil, not because I have major issues with Steam, but simply because I love the box. I love the artwork, the manual, even the art on the CD, I just love having a tangible copy of it. Perhaps some of this love is a little exagerrated, but I still don't want to see the death of retail copies of games just so I can always have the precious box.

I mean, I've got 126 PC games (128 after my next company store order, teehee) and I still am waiting on getting some shelves to showcase them. Right now they're just stacked up in the closet I can't bear to go boxless!

Boxed. I'm a nut for well-written manuals. I still read my Warcraft manual for the descriptions and backstory.

Not to mention all the handling of my Starsiege manual and compendium over the years. The fact I format semi-often makes CD's a good investment, too.
