I happend upon Half-Life 2's official website a while ago and apparently a webmaster from VU updated it to Gold status, and would ship November 23rd.

Now I'm taking this with a grain of salt but I made a topic so we could maybe discuss the logisitics of it all.

(Yes I did a thread search for this criteria ahead of time <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->)

    I'm fairly sure if the game was gold sirens would be going off and the looting of major department stores would begin (...to help them clear shelf space, of course).

    Or at the very least - sites like planethalflife.com and halflife2.net would have giant blinking banners saying "HALF-LIFE 2 IS GOLD!" with a count down to release.

    Or maybe just pigs flying around like Half-Life Cherubs. I'm not sure which would really happen.

    [although, you've got to think it's close with the reviews, the screenshots (admittedly related to the reviews), the purchase choices and the numerous pre-loads]

    Speculating wont make it come any faster <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> .

    $20 it actually did go gold, yet Vivindi is holding on to it until closer to the "holiday season" for marketting reasons + to get some leverage on Valve over the lawsuits. Wouldn't suprise me at all that's for sure.

    But still, until there is evidence proving it went gold, then all this is still just a rumor, like the ones we were hearing a year ago...

    Also, lets not overlook the most likely scenario that the webserver was probably just hacked. Maybe root password was "toor" or something. :P

    Oh well, we've waited 17 months already, what's 1 more?

    halflife2.net mentioned it on the main page but deleted it, a thread in the forum informed us it was deleted because VU sent them an e-mail stating that they could not confirm it was someone from VU that said it...

    AKA they probably got hacked.

    Doom I don't know about that. Valve has 100% control on weather Hl2 is released or not to a point, Sure they publish it but what would keep valve from releasing it over steam? VU would hate that because thats less $$$$ for them

    I believe they have a contract where they both must be released at the same time...why they planned on not letting people use their locked copies of HL2 until the boxes hit store shelves.

    But perhaps there is no contract/Valve wants to **** off Vivendi.

    I'm pretty sure the point is that Valve can't release HL2 over steam until it's been released in the stores.

    I think you'll need to believe it a bit sooner than that so it can get on your computer.

    ...or at least be purchased and unlocked on your computer. But if that's the case - then it's already on your computer and it must have gone gold already without anyone knowing.

    ...I don't know where this post is going.

    ...

    ....-abrupt end.

    Not really, some of the preloads go by without my knowledge. I expect to open Steam one day and find that Half Life 2 has moved from "Coming Soon" to "My Games".

    IS VU holding HL2 hostage? If so who would be up for a "hostage rescue"? <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    They're being rediculously smart, actually, sitting on HL2 until right before Christmas. They're releasing HL2 on the week of "Black Friday," where a large percentage of Christmas shopping is done. It's absolutely brilliant on their part.

    Of course, this makes me want to purchase over Steam that much more.
  • raz0rraz0r Join Date: 2003-07-24 Member: 18395Members
    They will release it on the same day worldwide. I'm sure of it, otherwise, people from Europe would be able to get it before it was the shops.

    And the inquirer is full of ****

    No. Retail will always take longer for Europe. Just look at Doom 3, where there was a delay of around 2-3 weeks from when it was released in America.

    And since when is www.theinquirer.net full of any kind of ****? Seriously man, they're one of the best tech news sites around. Quite witty as well.

    I am alot happier Im buying through steam now <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    What he means is that once it hits store shelves in the US, people in Europe can get it on Steam.

    Can anyone confirm that Valve is forced by contract to wait for Vivendi's retail release before they unlock it on Steam? They sure aren't doing that for Counter-Strike: Source.
  • illuminexilluminex Join Date: 2004-03-13 Member: 27317Members, Constellation

    The evidence certainly points to the contract stating that Half Life 2 must wait for release through Retail before it is released through Steam.

    However, since CS: Source isn't owned by Vivendi, they can release it when they want to. Valve's marketing quite smartly. Think about the fact that CS: Source will be released this week to the public, meaning many people will be buying through steam because they can get the #1 Online Game ported to Source <b>now</b>, rather than later.

    Valve Smart Smart Smart, Smart Smart Smart Smart Smart.
    Vivendi Dum, Dum dum dum dum, dum dum dum dum DUM.

    I originally was gonna buy the CE edition, but the 3 day delay for the UK plus the chance to play CS:S earlier has convinced me otherwise.

    STEAM STEAM LOL!

    They should start by releasing the SDK.

    I hope they release the SDK before HL2 is released so we have at least a few mods ready when the big day comes.

    I believe you're not the only one.
    Unless vivendi delays it those 3 days so it can be released the very same day worldwide, Valve ought to get an otherwise unlikely boost to steam purchases.
