How will you buy it?
This is of course very topical, with the release of CS:S just an hour ago. However, the most interesting point to me is the Silver package. Why? There's no retail equivalent. If you want to get HL:S and DoD:S, you either have to spring for the extra goodies ($90 for Gold, $80 for retail CE) or go Silver. That's what I'll be doing, and I'd previously been planning on buying it retail.
Important note: if you have an ATI voucher, you can upgrade from Bronze to Silver or Gold and merely pay the difference ($10 and $40, respectively). If that's what you plan to do, *don't* vote for the "ATI" option. Vote for the package you're actually getting.
Note 2: "Raving Fanboy Package" includes a hat, stickers, post-card, soundtrack, strategy guide, and a collector's box.
PRICES ($US):
Bronze: $49.99+tax
Silver: $59.99+tax
Gold: $89.99+tax+S&H
Retail: $49.99+tax
Retail CE: $79.99+tax

No thank you, raving fanboy package is not worth me spending an extra $40.
/me drools excessively
edit** oh hey, looks like steam silver pack is winning at 69% looks like the popular choice indeed.
That is something that should NEVER be on a poll.
IF you ain't sure on a forum poll then don't vote m8!
If it were $50 for Silver. Then yes.
$60 has broken my U.S. Grant policy for purchasing games. Besides, Grant is such an angry looking guy and that keeps me from spending him without cause.
Install Steam and buy the game on a computer equipped with broadband, then log out. Burn the GCF files to CD/DVD and bring them home, copy them to your drive, and you're good to go!
You could probably go to a HL2-equipped cybercafe and ask them if you could borrow a burner to get the files.
[really cheap because i have the ATI voucher... ]
But really though i could care less about DoD:S and HL:S.
Been there, done that, and nothing will change.
I just like the idea of holding the discs, since my computer won't run it anyway.
Steam costs the same as retail for 2 reasons:
1) Price is set by the market, not by development/production costs. Market rate for PC games is $50-60.
2) I'm sure that Valve and Vivendi have an agreement that requires Valve to charge retail rates for HL2. If it didn't, it could undercut Vivendi's necessary retail price (which *does* take production and materials costs into account) and no one would buy it retail. If that were the case, publishers would refuse to publish games that were also being released online, and the entire game-publishing industry would self-destruct. Which might not be a bad thing, but that's beside the point. Fixed price-points by contract.
On a side note, look at it this way: Unless you live in the same state as Valve (Washington), you don't have to pay tax for the Steam version. I think.
And, of course, there's the incentive to play CS:S *now* rather than a month and a half from now.
Edit: I was going to go for bronze, but it's only ~£5 GB Sterling cheaper. Silver works out to be around ~£33 GB Sterling, which is just under retail price...might as well get it.

No, retail will cost the same as any other game i could chose to buy. I'm perfectly happy paying standard retail price for a game.
Steam is a ripoff. Don't buy it over Steam.
When you buy from a retail shelf, you get hard CDs, box, manual, and a case to keep it in. Yay. It costs $50, but that cost is split between the store, the publisher, and Valve.
Buy it over Steam, you're getting NOTHING but the raw data, and all $50 go to Valve.
Not only do I think that Valve DOESN'T deserve my full $50, but I'm getting **** for it too. Nuh uh.
I replied to the blog. You might be interested to read it; it's far more accurate than his \me adopts annoying mothery tone to say: Remember Coil, we're setting an example with every post we make...
