As opposed to Doom3 which plays... how well on a GF3? Also, in that screenshot. The soft shadow on the ceiling would have had to be a baked texture in a Doom3 map. Slight cheating, but it works. Also increases the map size horrifically if you go for baked textures all over, given that none of them can really be tiled at that point without Halo-izing.. er.. cut-and-paste level creating. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I might like HL2, but by no means am I 'sticking my head in the sand'. Considering Doom3 is the tip of the iceberg so to speak I don't think you have any grounds to slander it. Look at quake3 now look at call of duty. Same engine. Entirely different in almost everyway. Radiosity is probably possible with the doom3 engine just not practical in a real time environment YET
And doom3 plays pretty well with a GF3 and looks good to boot. Can you say the same about HL2 on the lowest settings?
And obviously you haven't been around the quake scene all that often. When Quake, Quake 2, Quake 3 came out. There was no system capable of going full tilt with anything. Playing Quake3 on a VooDoo3 with 30fps was insanely fun. Pushing the limits of the graphics technology is what makes an engine. Dynamic Lighting is the next step. Not dx9 shaders and havok physics. It's been done time and time again.
I'll say this. Doom3 is the next step for technology. HL2 is probably the max you can go without on this current technology. Now it isn't a bad thing but I doubt we'll see many HL2 liscenses once we start seeing the full power of the doom3 engine. Especially with quake4 around the bend

I find it surprising that nobody has thought about SS3 using Thief 3's engine much the same way System Shock 2 used Thief 1's. You've got all the benefits of dynamic shadows (for those who don't want the Source engine) and it runs just as smooth -- usually smoother -- than Doom3's engine.

On the same machine with the same hardware and drivers, mine, i get the following.
Doom 3, medium / low custom settings, 800x600 0xAA 0xAF ~25-30fps, drops to 5fps at parts like the Guardian.

Oh COMON Marik. The engine they used for Thief 3 and Deus Ex 2 is a crap engine, plain and simple. Even on lowest settings, its crap. It looks like crap, and performs like crap, even on highest. D3 PERFORMS BETTER THAN IT ON ANY CARD, and LOOKS BETTER TOO! Get over that engine, its downright archaic!

I hate the Deus Ex 2 engine. Terrible looks, worse performance.
Anyways, I think the Doom 3 engine would be the superior choice for SS3... or whatever.
I got SS2 but I got a little past engineering and just gave up when I saw 3 turrets firing on me. Sparse ammo I can understand - but my pistol breaking just from firing a few magazines is ridiculous and annoying, not scary.
You know whats funny about all this engine arguing? Both Dues Ex 2 and Thief 3 are modifed Unreal 2 engines. BioShock is set to use the Tribes: Vengeance engine as a basline, and the T:V engine was based off... you guessed it - the Unreal 2 engine. Its ALL Unreal, baby! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Really though, there aren't a whole lot of FPS engines out there. You've basically got Epic's Unreal series and id's Doom/Quake stuff as the two big boys. HL2's Source is the young hopeful contender, though Valve has yet to prove itself as an engine builder. Then you have a slew of less popular engines like Crytek (FarCry), X-ray (STALKER), PAIN (Painkiller), Lithtech/Jupiter (NOLF2, Tron2, FEAR, etc), Gambryo (Pirates!, Freedom Force 1/2), Serious (Serious Sam), Refractor (BF1942), and whatnot. Tack on a few oddballs like the Torque engine, and thats pretty much your choices from A to Z (though i'm sure I forgot one or two).
Me, i'm happy with Irrationals choice. The Unreal engine is extremely capable in the right hands (eg: anyone but Ion Storm's), and should provide them a solid starting ground to build a great game from.

the preview posted before states that there is no actual relation between Bioshock and the 2 SSs. Only relation is that they want to keep the same feel.
Which is fine with me. Decommissioned WW2 lab sounds pretty cool, just because of how it'll look. Fallout, anybody? I just hope it kicks arse. It better not have such limited ammo stuff as in System Shock 2, though. That was just rediculous. ("Oh, I'm scared and it's suspenseful because <b>my gun is clicking!</b> The suspense, oh! Oh I'm freaking out because I fired 3 shots and my gun fell apart, oh!")
Agreed. I probably would've played all the way through System Shock 2 if it weren't for the fact that my weapons broke after firing a shot. Are they paper mache or something?

Only if you're enough of a moron to not get any Weapon Repair skill, and buy maintenence tools. Keep your guns longer, maintain them regularly, the longer they last. You just run into the broken-gun problem if you choose to try and play through like it was Quake or some crap.
I had mantenance skill, not repair, I assumed you would only need to maintain weapons and repair things in the environment like control panels. I had no instruction manual, as it was a... legal backup.
I dunno, I'll probably go through SS2 again when I'm done putting together my new rig.

I've gotten far enough in the game without spending almost any points on upgrades that soon, very soon, I will be able to jump straight to tier 5 and get the game's equivalent of vampiric touch. Though I must confess to using a config file edit or few to reduce the respawning. I don't use the more commonly-googled command which eliminates respawning completely, because I still want that "what if?" feeling, but I do agree that the default rate is overdone.
Painkiller is a modified Quake3 engine btw. I still have my doubts about valve as a serious contender in the engine building market. Hell even one of their most coveted things the physics isn't even their code. The HL2 engine seems like a prettier version of the HL1 engine IMHO :|

As was said, broken down weapons realy isn't that big of a problem.
I played through the game as my prefered char (techie) the first time and never hit any problems. And this was including a good number of points droped in both reg weapons and nrg weapons (nrg weps are disgusting in the hands of a tech)
And seeing how as the high level weapons are rather pointless (assualt rifle is probably the best weapon in the game), I just kept like 2-3 nrg weapons (pistols and rifles) on me, plus a pistol or an assault rifle.
Combine that with, guns? we don need no stinkin gun!

No, you couldn't gun run in this game. You do have to conserve ammo. That means upgrading your weapons and keeping them in fine order.
Aye, the Assault Rifle was king. Fully modified and well repaired - nothing finer.
At least this game treated its players as having some intelligence and willingness to work at a game.
I have to admit to never playing with psionics - something to try I feel.
Let's hope that they don't produce another DX2 and water everything down. Let's keep those big levels. Let's keep the complicated RPG elements. We want lot's of ammo types Loads of gun types ? We'll have that. Complex storylines with mondo twists ? Oh yes. Cute subtexts ? More, more, more !

Then you have a slew of less popular engines like Crytek (FarCry), X-ray (STALKER), PAIN (Painkiller), Lithtech/Jupiter (NOLF2, Tron2, FEAR, etc), Gambryo (Pirates!, Freedom Force 1/2), Serious (Serious Sam), Refractor (BF1942), and whatnot. Tack on a few oddballs like the Torque engine, and thats pretty much your choices from A to Z (though i'm sure I forgot one or two).
Me, i'm happy with Irrationals choice. The Unreal engine is extremely capable in the right hands (eg: anyone but Ion Storm's), and should provide them a solid starting ground to build a great game from.

But it seems 'floatly'; as if you aren't interacting with the environment in a solid, believable fashion. Unreal Tournment 2003/4 suffers from this too; in fact it seems to be a negative side to the frequent use of static meshes and their collision detection.
Anyways, I think the Doom 3 engine would be the superior choice for SS3... or whatever.

I was amazed by DX2. I was surprised. Sitting in my room going. This is circa 2000 graphics yet Im getting 35 fps. Doom3 gives me constant 50-60. What the? I uninstalled and returned it to walmart. (Yeah they're stupid and give returns for software with a recipt)

You just run into the broken-gun problem if you choose to try and play through like it was Quake or some crap.
I dunno, I'll probably go through SS2 again when I'm done putting together my new rig.
I still haven't finished the game, but I still have my last savegame. I've gotten far enough in the game without spending almost any points on upgrades that soon, very soon, I will be able to jump straight to tier 5 and get the game's equivalent of vampiric touch.
Though I must confess to using a config file edit or few to reduce the respawning. I don't use the more commonly-googled command which eliminates respawning completely, because I still want that "what if?" feeling, but I do agree that the default rate is overdone.

I played through the game as my prefered char (techie) the first time and never hit any problems. And this was including a good number of points droped in both reg weapons and nrg weapons (nrg weps are disgusting in the hands of a tech)
And seeing how as the high level weapons are rather pointless (assualt rifle is probably the best weapon in the game), I just kept like 2-3 nrg weapons (pistols and rifles) on me, plus a pistol or an assault rifle.
Combine that with, guns? we don need no stinkin gun!

Aye, the Assault Rifle was king. Fully modified and well repaired - nothing finer.
At least this game treated its players as having some intelligence and willingness to work at a game.
I have to admit to never playing with psionics - something to try I feel.
Let's hope that they don't produce another DX2 and water everything down. Let's keep those big levels. Let's keep the complicated RPG elements. We want lot's of ammo types Loads of gun types ? We'll have that. Complex storylines with mondo twists ? Oh yes. Cute subtexts ? More, more, more !
