<div class="IPBDescription">Roll up roll up, get em while theyre hot</div> I haven't seen a "What games can I play" thread in a while, and since i have my new and reasonably sexy computer [AMD XP 2400+, 512mb ram, radeon 9800 pro],

I'm looking for some free, convenient games [PC] to play. I'll make a list of games I already know below, and hopefully you guys can make recommendations for

games as well, or games that are becoming popular again, etc.

Okay, here goes - the emphasis will be on free games, or popular demos.

Quite obviously,
<b>Half-life</b>.
This game we've all come to know and love is not free, but it is at a reasonably cost now, and once you buy it, you are free to peruse at your leisure all

the wonderful mods that are available, free of cost. The issue is that there are only a few mods at any one time that are popular, and it's hard to keep

track of them, especially the more obscure ones. No servers, empty servers, no updates, you name it, it's hard to find a decent new mod nowadays.

-- <b>Natural Selection</b>. Let's start out with this one. You should all know it. A unique FPS/RTS mix of a combat and resource/building game between

unique aliens and humans. Free to download and play [with Halflife], and quite popular no matter where you are in the world. Check it out at

<a href='http://www.natural-selection.org' target='_blank'>http://www.natural-selection.org</a>

-- <b>Counterstrike</b>. Arguably the most popular halflife mod [or online game mod] in existence, if that makes sense. Countless servers, well-developed

clan scenes, a game that features a tried-and-true gameplay of two military teams facing off with a variety of weapons. It's valve's modification spearhead,

and it's free to download and play, assuming you have Halflife. Read more at <a href='http://www.counter-strike.net' target='_blank'>http://www.counter-strike.net</a>

-- <b>Day Of Defeat</b>. The definitive world war 2 mod for halflife [free], with two basic teams 'Axis' vs 'Allies'. The weapons are ww2 accurate, the maps

are good, and teamplay is a crucial part of its gameplay, ranging from 'capture the flag' to taking and holding positions as you advance towards the enemy's

spawn. You are almost guaranteed to have a few servers around for this game, and you can see if you like it at www.dayofdefeatmod.com

-- <b>Team Fortress Classic</b>. I believe this was one of the original lasting mods for Half-life, and has witnessed amazing sustained popularity over the

years, with it's simple but interesting and balanced blend of classes, where two faceless teams fight against eachother for map objectives and victory.

Interesting classes and fun gameplay, it's a free halflife mod and you can find out more at <a href='http://www.planethalflife.com/tfc/' target='_blank'>http://www.planethalflife.com/tfc/</a>

These are the four main Halflife mods, and are pretty much guaranteed to give you many servers and players, as well as interesting and fun games. But on to

lesser known halflife mods, with varying popularity and availability for games.

-- <b>Sven Coop</b>. This is a multiplayer version of the singleplayer halflife, with new maps and interesting cooperative gameplay, where you and your

buddies will fight AI enemies to achieve the map's objectives. It has many fun maps, and has had a recent update, but the game's popularity peaked a while

ago, and server numbers and usage will vary from country to country. Free to play if you have halflife, you can download it at <a href='http://svencoop.com/' target='_blank'>http://svencoop.com/</a>

-- <b>The Ship</b>. I have never played this game, but it is said to be an interesting, and fun new halflife-mod [and thus, free if you have HL]. The

gameplay is somewhat RPG-ish in a sense, as you are a character on a ship that has sims-like happiness, etc bars that you need to maintain, while achieving

your missions to silently murder given targets. Best suited for 8 players or less, the popularity is gaining in certain places, but still has a long way to

go. Servers are hard to come by, but still worth checking it out, at <a href='http://www.theshiponline.com' target='_blank'>http://www.theshiponline.com</a>
My time-frame for this post is constricted, as is my knowledge and memory of other Halflife mods, so i'll make a small and inconclusive list of HL mods that

I can remember. These are free so long as you have the original halflife.

- The specialists
- Zombie Panic [upcoming mod that i'm obligated to mention, haha]
- Action Halflife
- Halflife Rally

That's all I can think of right now that doesn't come under "obscure mod" and hasn't featured largely on these forums. I'm gonna need some people's help to

try and keep up to date with the popular mods etc. Maybe even get a large enough movement so that we can single handedly bring back the popularity of a few

mods.. who knows, heh.

You can check out a list of some of the Halflife mods over here <a href='http://topsites.moddb.com/all/?game=1' target='_blank'>http://topsites.moddb.com/all/?game=1</a>

Next up you have games that aren't halflife, but are still quite interesting for the mod capabilities.

- <b>Unreal Tournament 2004</b>. I haven't played this game, but the previous UT's were quite fun action shooters, well you get my point. This isn't free,

but it has a few mods [that i'm unfamiliar with] that are gaining popularity, and it seems to be one of the main 'mod making' games, spawning a few

interesting offshoot games. Check it out at <a href='http://www.unrealtournament.com/' target='_blank'>http://www.unrealtournament.com/</a> and see if you want to buy it. It certainly looks like mods are becoming a major

driving force behind a lot of games now, and Ut2k4 is no exception, with quite a few interesting mods coming up.

-- <b>AirBuccaneers</b>. This is the mod that has opened my mind to UT2k4 as a game that you can buy for not only the game itself, but for the mods

available. It's an interesting mod, based on 'pirates' in player-controlled hot air balloons, with cannons, missiles, and even close combat between players

with interesting weaponry. Check it out at <a href='http://ludocraft.oulu.fi/airbuccaneers/' target='_blank'>http://ludocraft.oulu.fi/airbuccaneers/</a>

Now I unfortunately do not have much experience in Ut2k4 mods, so you're going to have to ask people who play the game [and its mods] what's hot or not. You

can check out a list of mods at <a href='http://mods.moddb.com/?search=t&game=78&page=1' target='_blank'>http://mods.moddb.com/?search=t&game=78&page=1</a> and many of them look very interesting, the question is of course popularity,

and I can't help you with that. These mods are all free to play, assuming you have UT2k4.

- <b>Battlefield 1942</b>. This game isn't free, and requires a pretty decent computer to play. However, it has solid popularity, and has a small select group of mods that are worth checking out if you enjoy the game. It's another WW2 game with extensive vehicle [jeeps, tanks, planes, and in the mods you can have helicopters etc]. The game is mostly popular now because of it's mods, and enthusiasm for the original has died down a little. Nevertheless, check it out at <a href='http://www.eagames.com/official/battlefield/1942/us/home.jsp' target='_blank'>http://www.eagames.com/official/battlefield/1942/us/home.jsp</a>

-- <b>Desert Combat</b> - This is a close mod of BF1942 for the Gulf War [i think]. It's free so long as you have BF1942, and has a lot more interesting vehicles and weaponry. Requires a hefty computer to run, but it is currently I think the most popular of BF1942 mods, and is certainly worth giving a look. <a href='http://www.desertcombat.com/' target='_blank'>http://www.desertcombat.com/</a>

-- <b>Forgotten Hope</b> - This is an interesting new mod with gaining popularity. The mod is focused on being a more realistic remake of BF1942 with more accurate, and more of, vehicles and weaponry, with more realistic gameplay. It looks very pretty and could be a real blast. <a href='http://forgottenhope.bf1942files.com/main.html' target='_blank'>http://forgottenhope.bf1942files.com/main.html</a>

Now, this isn't just about mods, but other free games that are worth checking out. One interesting one to mention is, of course,

- <b>Tenebrae</b>. This is sort of a mod of Quake with technical/special effects. It's free to download, and quake is a classic so think of this as a free,

Super Quake. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> Check it out at <a href='http://tenebrae.sourceforge.net/' target='_blank'>http://tenebrae.sourceforge.net/</a>

- <b>Enemy Territory</b>. This is a mod of 'return to castle wolfenstein' and it's doing quite well. It's a war game, it's free to download [!!] and it's

gotten quite popular. I think Urban Terror is currently reworking itself to be a mod for Enemy Territory, instead of quake 3 [which is not free]. Check it

out, and download it, at <a href='http://games.activision.com/games/wolfenstein/' target='_blank'>http://games.activision.com/games/wolfenstein/</a> - It's a flash site, so just click the 'enemy territory' tab and you'll be right.

- <b>Allegiance</b>. I forgot about this game. It's a fun space fighter game, and it's free, so if you're intot that sort of thing, check it out, because it's gaining popularity. Link is at www.freeallegiance.org

- <b>Grand Theft Auto 1</b>. This game is now abandonware. It is an old game, completely awesome in every respect - it even has multiplayer. You get money for blowing stuff up. You'll be doing a lot of that. Get it at <a href='http://www.rockstargames.com/classics/' target='_blank'>http://www.rockstargames.com/classics/</a> Or from a mirror somewhere. I'm not sure if GTA2 is abandonware yet, you'll have to check that out for yourself.

- <b>America's Army</b>. This game is an advertising medium for the American Army [surprisingly enough, some miltiary force in real life copied the game and named itself the 'Army']. It doesn't matter though, because the game is actually quite good. There are a lot of people who like it, and it's become quite popular. It's completely free, reasonably realistic, and fun. The developers put a lot of effort into this game. Even non-americans [or immigrants!] can play this game, so get it at <a href='http://www.americasarmy.com/' target='_blank'>http://www.americasarmy.com/</a>

- <b>Warcraft</b>. The original warcraft.. still very very fun, still very very cool. Abandonware, there should be a mirror here at <a href='http://www.freeoldies.com/screenshot.php3?ref=Warcraft' target='_blank'>http://www.freeoldies.com/screenshot.php3?ref=Warcraft</a> get it, and tell your friends to get it as well

- <b>The Ur-Quan Masters</b>. This is an old game, described as "the best Space/Sci-Fi RPG of the 2D VGA Era". Basically, it seems to be an old novelty game, so if the name seems familiar from your youth [you oldie!], or if you're interested in this sort of stuff, check it out at <a href='http://sc2.sourceforge.net/downloads.php' target='_blank'>http://sc2.sourceforge.net/downloads.php</a> It's free.

I can't think of much more, so please reply and tell me some games that are free multiplayer and popular, and i'll edit them in. I want to expand this list

[and my game harem <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->] as it goes along, so everybody gets as much exposure to all these great games.

Thanks for your patience, and if you liked it, reply. If you spot any mistakes, shortcomings, or have a suggestion or a recommendation for a game, reply as

well! Thanks.

+ Thanks to DuoGodOfDeath for reminding me of BF1942, and "forgotten hope"
+ Thanks to Wheeee for Starcraft/broodwars and Allegience.
+ Thanks to UnderDOG for the Evil Genius Demo.
+ Thanks to nuub for GTA1 [and 2? Is it abandonware yet?]
+ Thanks to Cronos [and later, Marine01] for suggesting "Ur-quan"
+ Thanks to SoulSkorpion for his reminder that this list is for Free games or mods for popular games. I edited out Starcraft, Evil Genius Demo, and WH40k:Dawn of War demo. They're all great games, but unfortunately, not free nor multiplayer. Check them out anyway, and non-free games are mentioned later on in the thread, but just not in this list.

So only PC games then? Personally I want to try Air Buccaneers, but that would mean reinstalling Ut2k4, which I no longer have the harddrive space for.

Forgotten Hope - Best damn BF1942 realism mod EVER

    <a href='http://forgottenhope.bf1942files.com/main.html' target='_blank'>http://forgottenhope.bf1942files.com/main.html</a>

Doom 3 - Meh okay game, nice graphics nothing more.

Half-Life 2 - Quite possibly the sexiest game out in 5 years. It will be so huge it will make the 2nd coming of Christ look small.

Only PC games, sorry <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> I would have put 'PC' in but i don't think i could have fit it in the title.

You should clear some space.. I want to try these games, and it sucks that when i want to play them, i only have about 3 games to choose from, and i don't like 2 of them <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> It's good to have as much selection as possible.

Yes, I've not played UT2k4 much due to lack of funds over the past 6 months... But yea, I've played a bit. I really want to try Air Buccaneers also, very original looking.

I've played most of the HL mods listed above with the exception of The Ship. I may try it at some time in the future.

Tenebrae pwns, there is a more up to date version of the engine though Tenebrae2. <a href='http://tenebrae2.com/' target='_blank'>http://tenebrae2.com/</a>

It looks awesome and I like it because I can use Radiant to map for it when it comes out <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    There havn't been many updates on it recently though... <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Heh, I read funds as "friends" and so totally got the wrong meaning. (Okay I'll stop I promise. Don't kill me.)

Seriously speaking though, I've heard a lot of good things about this mod, but to clean up my hard drive would take some serious effort. So I might as well take the time to find out what other people have to say about this mod and get a good approximation of it. I really like the whole airship idea, it really agrees with me.

    Time to find their homepage!

EDIT: Woo go me! I missed the point of the entire thread! Thanks eediot.

I could include a bunch of japanese rpgs, but i'm not going to. these are the best games i've played so far.

    <b>Starcraft/BW</b>

Remains one of the best games ever, even after 7 years. Extremely well balanced. Also can both be had for less than $10.

    <b>Raptor - call of the shadows.</b>

2d scroller shoot-em-up, and totally friggin sweet. shareware version sucks, get the full one. can probably pick it up for $5 from an online store, i lucked out and a retailer still had a copy in their old games bin.

    <b>Dune 2</b>

pwnage game, it's the one game that i've beaten 5 times over, with each house. great game. it's also free now, i believe.

    <b>command & conquer: tiberian dawn</b>

first, and arguably the best, C&C. Red Alert 1 was also good. I'm a mechanical man!

    <b>descent 2</b>

3-dimensional movement, gut-churning corridors, lots of splodey weapons for your ship, and massive rooms filled with lava to shoot said weapons into, what more could anyone need? and the source has been released, so it's free now.

    <b>x-com: UFO defense</b>

    'nuff said.

<b>scorched earth (and scorched earth 3d)</b>

    the mother of all games.

    <b>nethack</b>

    it's addictive, i swear.

    <b>Lords of the realm 2</b>

oh man, i love crossbowmen surrounded by a box formation of pikemen. And throwing peasants into battle as fodder and hearing them say "We'll be shot to pieces!" is priceless.

    <b>secret of monkey island</b>

guybrush threepwood is the man. Get the <i>point</i>?

    <b>Loom</b>

this is a cool adventure game, i liked it.

    <b>Subspace aka Continuum</b>

I've been playing <a href='http://www.subspacehq.com' target='_blank'>this game</a> since 1996, and it still hasn't worn off. Quick summary: overhead, 2d shooter (kind of like Zone-66, in outer space). Each zone has its own settings, and sometimes graphics, so the game never really gets old. Kind of like the game Infantry, which Sony totally screwed up by making P2P.

    <b>Allegiance</b>

pretty neat space flight simulator, www.freeallegiance.org, kind of a "simulator/RTS" hybrid.

    <b>Baldur's Gate 1, 2</b>

I'm a dnd freak, and i love these games.

    <b>Oregon Trail</b>

    Wheeee has dysentery.

lastly, duke nukem /2, commander keen, captain comic, halloween harry. totally sweet games. Zaxxon too, that game was incredibly hard. I could never beat it.

*edit* dude, how could i forget.

    <b>Progress Quest</b>

Arguably the best RPG ever made by mortal man. 3D mode rocks your face off.

    <b>Tie Fighter</b>

i loved this game. Being able to down capships with a regular tie fighter was embarassingly fun.

Star Wars: Battlefront! More fun than 4 barrels of monkeys dipped in chocolate and rolled in happiness.
  • eedioteediot Join Date: 2003-02-24 Member: 13903Members
Wheeee i added starcraft+broodwars, and allegience. Definitely check out the other games though, especially monkey island [*salivates*].

Is starwars:battlefront still being used in demo form, or is it just a full priced game now? im reluctant to add new "latest craze" games, that are wildly expensive. this is mostly for cheap/free games and mods.
  • WheeeeWheeee Join Date: 2003-02-18 Member: 13713Members, Reinforced - Shadow
some of them are really old (like 80s or early 90s) so you might not be able to find them. I'm just doing these from memory.
  • eedioteediot Join Date: 2003-02-24 Member: 13903Members
Yeah. Starwars + allegience are still popular today, though. And most of your other ones are still appropriate for 'download it, and tell your friends to download it as well' type scenarios, for some good old fashioned lan ownage <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    <b>Evil Genius</b>
    <a href='http://howevilareyou.com/us/downloads.jsp' target='_blank'>http://howevilareyou.com/us/downloads.jsp</a>

A great combination of Dungeon Keeper and NOLF. You play an evil mastermind bent on world domination. Try the demo (200 megs) free from thier website.

To that list, I'd like to add:

X-Com: Apocalypse - The true successor to X-Com: UFO Defense.

    Ascendancy - My all-time favorite 4X game

Space Empires 4 - The most involved 4X game I've ever played

Civilization 2: Test of Time - Not only is it Civ 2, but it's also got a Fantasy and a Sci Fi mode as well! Score!

Worms 2/Amargeddon - Scorched Earth... now with exploding sheep!

Icewind Dale & Planescape Torment - More D&D goodness

Fallout 1 & 2 - Quite possibly the best PC RPGs ever.

Crusader: No Remorse & Crusader: No Regret - One of my favorite games, it's an isometric adventure/kill things/sneak around kind of game.

Total Annihilation - What I think is still the best RTS game ever.

Arachronox - Earthbound... only for computer, science fiction, and occasionally weirder.

...pretty much all of those can be purchased quite cheaply.

Freelancer was also an awesome game, but it'll run you a bit more.

Where is call of duty, Diablo2 (Yes, it IS good. If you spend 200 hours of your life on a

and of course Warcraft 2! Don't say you didn't like it, for it is a lie!

Singularly the best Space/Sci-Fi RPG of the 2D VGA Era, with a musical score that to this day is still stunning.

And the best part? IT'S FREE FOR DOWNLOAD FROM THAT SITE!

And it can run on just about any system from Linux to Macintosh and even WinXP if your a microshaft zombie.

There is even a remix team hard at work making a whole new set of music for the game. You can download their music and visit their website <a href='http://www.medievalfuture.com/precursors/' target='_blank'>Here, and for free as well!</a>

    yeah deus ex is awesome.

dx:invisible war was great too, but the original is still the best.

Yeah. Deus Ex was SOOO great back then (still is, just wont work anymore). Invisible war wasnt so good, you could play it through once or twice but that was about it. But let me find some good oldies back here...

    - Command and Conquer Tiberian Sun
Loved it a long time ago

    - Command and Conquer: RA1 and RA2
Both were good, especially RA2 over the internet.

    - Call of Duty
    Just awesome game.

    - Medal of Honor Allied Assault
Again another awesome game, both in SP and MP.

    - Command and Conquer Generals (+ Zero Hour)
    Another great C&C game.

    - Rise of Nations (+ Thrones and Patriots)
    Only good thing from Microsoft.

    - Battlezone 2
A goodie RTS/FPS/TPS. Bit old game but still is nice.

    - Soldier of Fortune 2
Good game over the internet but SP was a bit mild.

    - Imperium Galactica 2
Awesomeness to the max for this one. Very good space RTS.

    - Civilisation 2-3
Do I need to say more?

I'll post more if I find some.

I actually dislike Civ3. Civ1 was way better, and Civ2 was still better. But the first Civ was the best, IMO.

Well its a matter of opinion. It's quite nice on LAN or 'hotseat'. That's the add-ons, original cant have MP no way. More money for them.

Me! I played it on LAN with my friend and it was great fun. Especially against the computer. It's best in a group of 3 or 4. If theres more it gets too easy.

    Some more good games:

    - Anno 1503

    - Anno 1602 (Older, harder and much more enjoyable)

    - GTA 1, 2, 3 and Vice City

    - Sim City 2000, 3000 and 4

    - Empire Earth + Art of Conquest

    - Rainbow 6: Rogue Spear, Raven Shield

    - Silent Storm + Silent Storm: Sentinels

Battlezone 1 was Battlezone 2's superior in every way except perhaps for graphics.

Battlezone 2 had more of a vietnam feel to it which I didnt like in the slightest. BZ 1 had that "KILL THOSE COMMIE BASTAGES!" feel to it that made it t3h aw3s0m3. Not to mention the scout actually felt like it was going at a good clip rather then BZ 2's floatiness that couldnt convince me I wasnt tearing over that landscape like a mofo.

    BZ1 ftw. Too bad it's multplayer is non-functional now <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Warzone 2100
Old game, now abandonware, just about the earliest 3D real-time strategy in which you... wait for it...

    Build your tanks from peices.
Chassis (Body) Propulsion (Basically movement type) and a Weapon.

Infantry is also featured in the game as cyborgs, but they're generally too weak to be of any real use. More like support, really. Damage types also effect the way the game is played, with some research topics improving the armor and thermal armor of units. Yes, thermal armor upgrades. Yes, flame throwers... But they're only good against buildings and weak units.
    Relatively close-range too.

Only one resource type: energy. Comes from power plants that burn oil that comes from oil wells, natch. $$$ maps are, not suprisingly, desert landscapes. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> //political joke

Not really recommended for on-line play as it can be unballanced; it usually devolves into a game of tank rushes and mass-production on $$$ maps. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> Fun for a while, especially if you play in team games. 8 max players supported, for a 4v4. Of couse, like any game, there is one "ultimate weapon." And that weapon is... *SPOILER* Arch-Angle Rockets. Able to strike any enemy position anywhere on the map; their range is unlimited if you have a big enough sensory grid, or a view of the entire map.

I couldn't find any download links for warzone 2100, not even on abandonware sites [mind you, they are fairly useless]. But i did pick up the warcraft link, so that's in the front page post.

Call of Duty: United Offensive is the greatness.

The some multiplayer map reminds me of BF1942, but done better.

I'm sorry, but I have no time for any list of "Hot games" that does not include The Ur-Quan Masters, free pwnage games should be topping your list.
