Singularly the best Space/Sci-Fi RPG of the 2D VGA Era, with a musical score that to this day is still stunning.
And the best part? IT'S FREE FOR DOWNLOAD FROM THAT SITE!
And it can run on just about any system from Linux to Macintosh and even WinXP if your a microshaft zombie.
There is even a remix team hard at work making a whole new set of music for the game. You can download their music and visit their website Here, and for free as well!

It's already there, 'Marine01'. Just because I decided not to put it on the front page, doesn't mean that you should just post a reply without reading the thread.
Oh I read what Cronos had to say, which is why I didnt bother linking to sourceforge. I was under the impression that there was a list of hot games being compiled on the front page, you had already made several other edits for other games, so I assumed you had deemed this on not worthy of your "whats hot" list. I was expressing my displeasure at this.
The decision was more of a personal one. I looked at a few screenshots, and I had no idea what the game was. It looked to be the same sort of novelty style game as pacman, tetris, of one of the early RPGs [or Trogdor]. But if you can attest that it deserves it's place on the list, I'll chuck it up.
Er... guys, the whole point was free games (or mods). Not "every cool game you've ever played".
...aand I would add to the list myself, but I can't think of anything that hasn't already been mentioned. 'Cept maybe for the Wing Commander series, some of which are semi-abandonware.
The problem with Battlezone 1 is that I can't seem to find a legit abandonware download link anywhere. When I PM'd Cronos about it, here is his response:
^^That comes as close to an official site as ever for BZ 1.
The official site for BZ 2 is pandemic studios site is http://www.pandemicstudios.com/games/bz2/ though as you can see it hasnt been updated in over four years.
I'd say that Battlezone classes as Abandonware in my books because activision, the people that made the game in the first place, dont seem to even remember it and it's not even listed on their site directory.

So if anybody can clear this up, or find a [legit] abandonware download link, that would be great.
Edit: Good point SoulSkorpion. I edited the original list. The thread can still be used for recommendations for good games as well, but the original post is now restricted to free games or good mods for popular games.
I'll just clear up SC2 for you
Star Control 2 is the follow up to a strategy game called (not surprisingly) Star Control.
The original Star Control pitted seven allied races, The Shofixti, The Earthlings (humans), The Syreen (People who are almost human, possibly an offshoot race), The Yehat, the Mrrnmhrmmm (Yeah, I know thats a mouthful), and the Chenjesu against another "Evil" faction known as "The Hierarchy".
As it were, for over thirty years the Alliance Of Free Stars fought the Hierarchy and their Ur-Quan Masters.
The Hierarchy consisted of the Umgah (blobby creatures with a talent for genetics and bad humour), the Spathi (mobile cowardly clams armed with a howitzer), The Mycon (Mushroom men), the VUX (repulsive creatures), the Androsynth (renegade human clones that really really really really hate humans. They were once former slaves, long story, check out Here for more info), the Ilwrath (religious fanatics that delight in destruction and torment) and finally, The Ur-Quan (giant catterpillars out to enslave the galaxy).
Eventually the Alliance of Free stars began to lose ground. Pivotal to the war was the race to understand and take advantage of ancient precursor artifacts. At a critical point in the war, an entire precursor base was discovered and a science mission despatched. This is where SC2 picks up, however, things havent gone to plan.
It picks up about the 2150's. Your flagship, the Vindicator, has entered the earths solar system. Your flagship is the design of the mysterious precursor race. You've come back to Sol to give the alliance of free stars whatever aid and technology you can, but things are not what they seem, and whether you like it or not the fate of all intelligent life in the sector could hang on your decisions from here on out.
I've given enough away, you will have to learn for yourself the greatness that is SC2.

Fixed the link above, apparently the difference of a single "-" can take you where you want to go or get you flooded for Gator installs =\
Okay, I'm going to **bump** this topic considering that;
1: October is far from over
and
2: The World Of Warcraft Open Beta is Starting extremely soon which classifies as a "free" game for the moment.
