Yeah i'm downloading it too. getting 58 k\bs.
Which isn't too shabby.
I really enjoyed the "The Sands Of Time" but it felt
pretty linear. A level editor would have been awesome.

LOL... looks like the direct-link download has died under the strain. At least the BT is still going, even if I'm getting a really poor DL rate.

Not really...

It's not that great TBH. Just the concept that ruled. Too repetitive in the end.

Guess it's a matter of preference. Aside from the (overly difficult) battle in the elevator, I enjoyed SoT start to finish. It's essentially a sixties turban-and-scimitair-movie rolled into a modern computer game, and that concept - a game working first and foremost as a purveyor of a well written plot - just worked for me.

I'll be d/lling the demo once my CS:S update has finished. Yup, I just became proud owner of the HL2 Silver Package.

I found all the combat in PoP to be overly difficult. Pointlessly so. A challenging battle against one or two bad guys is OK. A challenging battle against five? At once? And they only die if you manage to dagger them at exactly the right moment after you've knocked them down, or else they regenerate their health and pop right back up? AND using said dagger makes you overly vulnerable for a stupidly long time? BOO!

I strongly enjoyed the beautifully crafted and well designed jumping puzzles and the story was most excellent. But after the first few battles I gave up and went and downloaded a cheat that made most things die in one hit. Wrong way to play the game? Perhaps. But I simply wasn't enjoying the combat part of it at all. I found the best way to play the game through without having to endure the parts that I found pointless and aggravating. PoP was better in this regard, if I find something wrong with most other games I will simply delete them. But the good aspects of this game outweighed the bad aspects of the combat system, so I simply interpreted the combat system as damage and routed around it.

Just tried the demo:

The good:
Much wider variety of new combat moves, more control over which ones get used when
You still can rewind time
You can make a bloody mess slicing people's heads off or splitting them right down the middle
[Note: the following comment comes from someone who doesn't remember having much difficulty with combat in PoP thanks to the trusty time-rewinding feature. Also note I found said combat easy enough that I never used the sword for anything but time rewinding and finishing blows] The enemy actually has a chance at kicking your sorry posterior if you don't have a clue what you're doing this time around. (Ninja Gaiden influence?)
Possibilities to use traps to kill your enemies for you (something I don't remember ever doing in PoP1)

The bad:
The boss character on the demo's 2nd level disappeared about 2 seconds after he appeared. I couldn't kill him, and therefore couldn't go on. The demo's got no way to save, so I'll have to redo everything up to that point again

Something tells me you ignored your jump-key while fighting, Bob. You can vault over most lower enemies, striking them twice and then taking their sand up in the motion if you time the dagger-key right, or bounce off walls, which'll literally knock any enemy in the game out. Add to this the sand abilities (most notably the freeze), and it isn't really that hard to survive most battles.
• BobTheJanitorBobTheJanitor Join Date: 2003-12-10 Member: 24228Members, NS1 Playtester
Yeah, it wasn't so much the difficulty of the combat that was the problem. And if it was simply tough but doable that would be fine. The problem was that often it was loooooong. Kill 5 sandzombie critters, and 5 more appear. And they always tend to warp right up next to me and try and turn me into the meat in their zombie-love sandwich. I'd jump over one, and somehow find myself right back in the middle of the circle again. I admit I didn't put a lot of work into figuring out advanced combat tactics. I really really enjoyed the combat system at the beginning of the game, when you were fighting normal opponents. As soon as the life sucking dagger became a requirement, it became an aggravating yawn-fest.

I have a tendency to do that in single player games when something simply becomes more annoying that rewarding. I did the same in Mafia. Absolutely amazing game, one of the best stories ever. But certain parts of the game (especially 'keep your idiot sidekicks who think it's a good idea to charge 5 guys holding tommy guns alive' sections) had me pulling my hair out, until I just gave up and cheated my way past them.

Anyway, dragging us all off topic here. I look forward to checking out the new PoP. If it at looks anything like the last one, the eye candy alone will be worth it. (the level design, you freaks, not the princess)

I played through the demo again; having more practice this time around ==> got through the same parts in much less than half the time and looked even more of a bad*** doing it.

The bad again: this time the boss didn't disappear, he went into some sort of walking animation towards me while warping backwards into a corner. Eventually he continued to do the moonwalk into said corner, and I was able to clip through him and couldn't attack him one bit.
I sure hope they'll fix that in a re-released demo and the full game

I hope the full game has more story and charactor elements that this demo. One thing i loved about the original was SPOILER ALERT the way the game was played as a flashback, with the prince narrating the story as you progressed. END SPOILER There isnt any of this in the demo and your left puzzled as to WTH your supposed to be doing.

However the new combat moves are cool, and if you turn on gore it looks great

(edit by coil:) It's arguably a spoiler, but it was also one of the coolest things for me to discover at the end of the game, so if you haven't played it SHAME ON YOU and go play it. ^^

I dunno Coil, even in the demo you could tell he was narrating it.

This coming from an MMO player, I found SoT incredibly fun, and never repetitive. I would love to vault over one enemy, slash his buddy, vault back over the other guy, turn to the buddy, slash, vault, and finally stab in back.

...then, suddenly 20 more appear. And I just smirk XD

Now, maybe it's just the MMO games I've tried (Planetside and Runescape), but uh... Yeah...

I found combat in the PoP: SoT demo to be repetitive.

naa i found the whole "enter a room wall run to switch ,wall run to ledge, pole vault to ledge, wall run, pull switch, wall run" very boring after u have dont it 20 times
then the odd scrap with ur slowmo thing then more wall running and pole vaulting and switch pulling :/

It also has some of the most authentic, enjoyable voice-acting and scripting in a game. Great stuff.

once new computer is set up I will download and install.

I liked the combat system in PoP:SoT, however it did get repetative, and I realy hated the puzzles (cool the first few times, then just silly)

I played through the demo for the 3rd time in 1 day, and out of about 5 times of getting to the 2nd demo level's boss, I've only gotten to fight it once due to the bug I mentioned earlier. It doesn't always moonwalk into one corner, but invariably it will get stuck, and the very first time I encountered the bug it disappeared entirely.

The one time I did get to fight it, I was able to tell how to beat it, but it killed me first. Got all the way up to it again and....bug. I quit the game in frustration and typed up this post.

I hope I'm not missing anything, because I consider this bug crippling. I'm uninstalling the demo; I've had my fun with it, and if there was any more content to it after the 2nd level, oh well
