Why the anger over hunting? I wouldn't do it myself, but I don't see why you'd hate the activity unless you believed that killing animals is wrong; you don't strike me as being that type of person, EEK.

I don't consider it a sport because it really doesn't require physical fitness (far from it - how many fatass beer-guzzling 'hunters' do you know? Puttering around on your snowmobile, sitting in a stand with a thermos of coffee, real hard work I can tell you that...
I have a load of guns, but I've never been hunting. I think its time I go..I think the only gun that I have that would even resemble a hunting rifle is my Mauser K-98...sheesh.

And funbags, anything from .223 Rem. up is suitable for deer. The only problem I could imagine with your K-98 is the ammo. Myself I use a .303 british calibre rifle, and ammo is exspensive, so i've taken up reloading. I'd suggest the same for you.

Well I'm from the South so I can say deep fry is quite good. Although having it much of my life its gotten a little old. I want to try it cooked steak-style like suggested. mmmmmmm
Sounds fun shooting ducks lol, hunting is pretty much getting banned altogether here in the UK, well fox hunting with hounds mainly but then that's a little bit OTT I say if your gonna go hunt something go do it on foot and actually hunt whateverit is your hunting.

I support it. We all like sport, peoples sports just vary, that and I am totally unethical and don't care about the ethics of the sport.
Notice I havnt once called it sport my abrasive friend. It's a hobby. Personally, I think you have to be athlectic to play a sport, and you do not have to be athlectic to hunt. It helps, but not nesscesary.
On this note, why is golf considered a sport? It's just a game.

Cause people used to duel to the death with their putters at the 18th hole. Winner takes off 10 strokes.

The Golf itself is not the sport. A little known fact is that the real sport of golf is excluding black people. It can be quite a challenge.

Ontopic: I don't really have a problem with the method of hunting, provided suffering is made a minimum..
I'd like to address the posts about "humans being far more humane than animals hunting." Wolves and such do NOT have a lot of options when it comes to hunting - they dont have .22 cal rifles or bows.. they just have jaws/claws. I would class them -much- better hunters than any human thusly, considering most deer and such are far faster than the average 4 legged predator
I do have a problem wtih hunting being considered a sport.. It isn't. It's a method of procuring food (damn tasty food I might add). Trophys...are... kinda bad imo. It's glorifying it.. and.. It.. really doesn't fit <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Im a conservationist,
I keep whatever important bodyparts (antlers, teeth) they let me.
My favorite are European styled, since their cheap and you don't have much decay. Since it's just bone.
The chances of the deer surviving are much higher and hunters do a service for the ecosystem.
Maybe if you and your kind took the inititive to do the research before you talk, the world would a much better place.
Since it's German, im sure you can find the higher pressure 8mm loads and proper scope it could prove to be quite an effective firearm. A friend of mine has a 30-06 based on the Mauser action. Damn good shooter.
Alot of good hunting rifles work on the mauser action.
But when Im serious Mr Remington 700 .300 Win Mag does the job.
<a href='http://www.martinarchery.com/bows/hatfield.htm' target='_blank'>Martin Hatfield</a>
Heres my bow, I only trust Martin.
I do agree with some of what you say, but you are being pretty general. There isnt only one kind of hunting, like I already said.
And funbags, anything from .223 Rem. up is suitable for deer. The only problem I could imagine with your K-98 is the ammo. Myself I use a .303 british calibre rifle, and ammo is exspensive, so i've taken up reloading. I'd suggest the same for you.
Beast, I know some people try to get fancy with venison, but I usually treat a steak of deer the same as a steak of cow. Tenderize, rub, marinate and let sit in the fridge for a night. Charcoal BBQ next day, can't beat it.

They get in my trash, they get plastered. That has nothing to do with conservation efforts. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

theres plenty of surplus ammo around and a few manufactures started putting out "rarer" types of ammo.

Yea, but some of that surplus stuff can be real garbage, especially if you get a box of corrosive and don't know it (terrible experience).

Thats why you should always clean your guns right after you shoot, especially if you don't know what type of ammo your using.
If you can't bring a bottle of windex with you and when your done squirt some of it down the barrel, it kills off the corrosiveness of the ammo for the time being.
