Bah.

Set up a contest between two newbies, and see who can make a box room faster. Assuming that they havn't looked at any documentation and have no prior knowlage of editing maps, my money is on the person using Hammer.

Yeah but when the box is finished in hammer, they'll spend about eight hours trying to fix it, and then have to substitute with a box that looks like a dingo on crack. Don't ask me how that works.

I'd like to learn radiant.. but it's hard

I find that very doubtful. Radiant allows much much quicker brush creation, and most operations can be handled without switching to any varied tools. Construction is far easier. But tricker to get used to when you do have experience in another editor.

Also, that quote from Waldo confirms my recollection that DoD also got the CS treatment. couldn't remember that for sure, but I imagine by the time they're finished we can expect something at the least on par with CS:S. Which, while visually average overall, is still definitely an improvement.

The thing that annoyed me about Radiant was the lack of resizing dongles on the brushes...am I missing something, is there a way to turn these on?

That aside, I'm slightly disapointed with the look of DoD:S right now, but I'm guessing their first priority is porting the game, then they can make it look nicer and add all the features that become availble with the Source engine... *crosses fingers*

You don't need them. You just drag on the selected brush to move it, outside it to drag and resize. It also can resize multiple non-planar brushes at once as well as beveled or oddly-shaped brushes, correcting shape and vertices accordingly.

That's true of any editor, though. If you know one, you have to unlearn parts of it to learn another. Same with any piece of software.

As for dongles, I believe he meant the little boxes that normally appear at the midpoints and corners of an object in WC, or on numerous other objects in various programs. Alternatively, a small USB device which is used as a hardware lock for software (modeling programs, for example). I used Q3 Radiant, Quark, and Hammer, I have to say that I liked them all in that specific order, from greatest to least.

Radiant reminds me so much of DEU I could puke out acidic mucas of joy.

Oh yeah, I forgot DEU, let me ammend my list...

DEU, WinDEU, MacDEU(?), Radiant, QuArK, UnrealEd ( O: ), Hammer.

One thing that's always bugged me about editors is that they're usually tailor made to fit whatever game they're supposed to work for (IE: Hammer and HL; Quark and Quake 1; Q3 Rad and Q3; World Edit for WarCraft 3; etc etc) yet sometimes something crops up that looks like it was just a quick hack-job to fit the game in question, like Doom 3's "editor" which seems to be nothing more then a beefed-up and patched Radiant for use with D3. (Because i distinctly remember seeing "Q3 Radiant" or a similar phrase SOMEWHERE in the D3 editor)

Just feels wrong to be using a program for something that it may never have been designed for (Imagine using Hammer to make a D3 level; you'll get the picure quickly)

A hardware device that sticks into some port (varies,) in the back of the PC. Expensive pieces of software have them as an anti piracy measure. "No Dongle? Fine. I won't run".
Although I'm not sure what happens when you run out of ports. :S

The best editor ever, without a single doubt, is the old one for Duke-Nukem 3D, it was fantastic.

If an advanced version was used for the new Duke Nukem (yes, yes. I know) or any other game i would wet my pants in glee.

UnrealED was one of the best editors I've ever used. I worked on a single player Deus Ex mod for over six months and made several maps with it. I can understand why people have trouble with it but it's definately worth sticking with it until you learn the ins and outs.

Worst picture from the Source engine i've seen yet. And still using 512x512 textures for such a big surface? :/
