Tensing your stomach is all well and good but no matter how physically fit you are NEVER let someone punch you in your chest or stomach.
My father was an olympic wrestler (read: very strong midsection) but even he said that you really cannot 'take' a punch to your stomach. (when he was 18 he did and ended up with a pulled muscle. Takes a long time for an abdominal muscle to heal)
Tensing up just increases your risk of ripping a muscle or other tissue. Roll with the punches. Do not give them a solid target to hit. While a strong abdominal area will lessen the chance of injury it really isn't a good thing to do.
As for a punch to the sternum the worst thing you can do is try to hold your breath/tense up your chest. Your chest is compressable and will compress with a strong hit. The air will be forced out of your lungs and your diaphragm will be in the same position as when your lungs were full. This is called getting the wind knocked out of you, and if it happens to you in a fight then you are done for.
If you get hit in the sternum make sure you exhale as you take the hit to ensure that while the air left your lungs it gave your diaphragm a chance to reset itself.

If the puncher leans into his swing it will be a terrible amount of force crushing into your stomach. Just think about how fast a pitcher can throw a baseball.

Imagine what that can do to your abdominal muscles.
