Steam is down? I don't see that happening too much...

If Steam was down why would you reformat?

I don't understand why some people just have to have their cardboard box with pretty pictures and a cd? Instead of taking your cd places, you can use steam access your copy of HL2 on any computer.

crash problems? new computer? just need to clean up? i am sorry but my computer does not, nor will it, revolve around steams status. and even if it did, and steam went down, what if i bought a new computer? or what if soemthing happened to my hard drive that required a reformat? what if i couldnt back up my gcfs?

    You don't have a CD-Burner?

Seriously, if you're that worried, put the gcfs on a disk.

I think the main issue people have (at least how I see it), is backing up the gcfs does not do anything. If you install HL2 from a retail disc without steam on the system, you most likely can play it just like that. However, even if you have the gcfs, that doesnt accomplish anything, you can't "install" that data.

You need Steam to authenticate HL2 no matter how you buy it. Burning the gcf's is even more secure than buying it in a box, because you can burn it when you're logged in and always be able to access offline mode.

I'm going to buy the special edition box, that has the Silver package in it.

Those are some sexy textures. It's like a marshmellow
