    I found out recently why americans call football "football" I was confused cos the ball hardly gets kicked.

    Apparently it's cos the ball is one foot in length makes sense tbh

    Any of you football buffs on here know if this is really true? Cos I heard it off some dude and not out of a credible source like a book.

    I just measured a football, and it is one foot long.

    Football is singlehandedly the most brutal sport. Consider that most players die before they are 60 (and you can forget about walking). Without pads the players would literally last a single game.

    Rugby is girly compared to football. These football players are mounds of muscle who can run a hundred meters in 11 seconds flat. And those are just the linebackers. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    ROFL you've never seen the New Zealand All Blacks have you <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->.

    As for them all being mounds of muscle pfft, the big players like warren sap look like reasonable large fellas with an extra stone or tow to bulk them out.

    If Rugby is "girly" by comparison why was half the NFL trying to sign Jonah Lomu saying crazy stuff like "name your price" after he exploded into the Rugby World Cup in 95? <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    Because there are 32 NFL teams, each with separtate ambitions. So no, the 'NFL' was not after this man.

    Second, unless this man is at least 250 pounds, he would get no place in the National Football League as a runningback. I don't care how spry he is - in games such as this spry simply does not cut it.

    Third, in a game without pads there is much less contact. No rugby player in their right mind will dive headlong into a 267-pound man powering forward.

    Fourth, Warren Sapp is a very muscular man. I have absolutely no doubt that he could outrun both of us.

    Last, yes I have watched rugby (in the wonderful world of the United States we have ESPN). And no, rugby cannot even begin to compare to the brutality of football. Saying that it is is akin to telling me that lacrosse is more brutal than hockey. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    I said half the NFL not the whole NFL.... besides Lomu isn't alone when it comes to NFL teams trying to tempt them away form Rugby, former England captain Martin Johnson's agent has been repeatedly approched by several NFL teams.

    I have no idea what a US pound is in relation to a UK pound or a KG

    I can tell you that both Johnson and Lomu weigh in at about 19 stone johnson is 6'7" and Lomu is 6'5".

    Lomu was a winger and could run 100 meters in a little over 11 seconds from a standing start. bear in mind most wingers arn't that size in Rugby or that fast.

    Johnson was a Lock and wasn't expected to be anywhere as fast as a winger.

    You really wasn't watching properly on your "ESPN" or maybe you were watching Rugby League and not Rugby Union, the former is less emphasis on contact and more fluid in it's game play the latter is the one to which I am refering to. Maybe the less contacting with no pads is true in the USA but it certainly isn't elsewhere it seems.

    Players in Rugby (Union) regularly clatter into each other while running at full steam, the ways of stopping a man running at full pelt are limited (tripping is not allowed and high tackles are also not allowed).<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    After a bit of research I've found that Lomu is around 250 pounds (and looks absolutely massive when compared to other rugby players - are there many his size?).

    This is above average for a running back in the NFL - generally a wide receiver will hover around the 220 pounds (nearly 16 stone). But then, there are actually many wide receivers and tight ends (the ones who run the 100 in 11 seconds or less) that are this size. There are some true genetic freaks in the National Football league (Daunte Culpepper, quarterback, weighs in at over 260 - frightfully high for a quarterback). Even then, there are some men who weigh in at over 300 pounds (about 22 stone). Linebackers such as <a href='http://www.geocities.com/miamidolphins_num1/Zach.jpg' target='_blank'>Zach Thomas</a> (17 or 18 stone) are generally the norm for that position.

    Simply put, your Lomu is a giant man for rugby. It is not fair to say that all rugby players are his size; However it would be perfectly fair to say that the average football player is his size or greater. American football is the largest, cruelest sport in existence - these agents scour tens of millions of candidates and select those who are in peak condition.

    It is a humbling sight to see a 320 pound linebacker crush a 220 pound quarterback like he was made of paper.

    Lomu's not really a giant when compared to people who play in the forward positions on a Rugby team (Martin Johnson towers over him) however he's not a forward he's a winger and when compared to most wingers he is a quite a bit bigger than the norm. What makes him special is he combines the size of a forward with the speed of a winger.

    It's not fair to say all rugby players are his size wingers and flyhalfs etc are normally smaller. That kinda size is generally the norm tho (18-19 stone mark) some players from countries like Tongo, Fiji and Samoa can be even bigger. It just depends on the playing styles; some teams go for a squad of large players so they can have heavier packs. Countries like France however prefer a lighter faster pack and try to win using arguably the fastest back row around.

    Or in the case of the All Blacks they just seem to get their cake and eat it <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    The British Lions (It's basically an all star team made up of the best players from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales) go on tour to New Zealand this summer and will play the All Blacks in a best of three series. Might be worth watching out for on that ESPN of yours.

    It might be on ESPN 8 "The Ocho". <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
