for those that have hl2, remember your first sightings of the fast zombies?
for me i thought that was fookin brilliant, i had a real feeling that i was being hunted when those things were around, and they were so fast when up close.
wish NS had that feeling as a marines, ya know, fear of whats after you <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

As a marine, isn't a cloaked,wall-climbing,dark-hiding alien skulk sumwhat perhaps just a teeny little bit considered scary? Especially when they de-cloak right in front of you then start biting? And aren't aliens scared of being shot at by heavy robotic-looking ha guys? I think NS has the potential to scare the crap outta sumone, especially with the skulks.....and the onos.....and the fades......
Failing that,they could always add my avatar spook as an alien. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> Guaranteed to scare the s**t outta a marine,especially if she had cloak.....
its no wonder thats its not scary anymore after having played the game 1,2, or 3 years and knowing it inside out...
its got alot to do with the maps aswell i supose, most are brightly light, clean places... if ns does go source i hope they add alot of atmosphere to the maps. I like some of the triggered sounds in the ns maps that happen now and then, they add to it a bit, but i supose the competitve community would whine if there was to many of these.

which dark? 90% already got removed, the rest can be lit or cleansed on another way.
also: long range units should be way more scared then melee monsters(!) - until yet, its the complete other way.
plus: what is more scaring? a beast inside your base (with a dozen or more red dots from hmg on it) or a shot from nowhere and you can't tell from where? and when you finaly found it, its surounded by 2000 turrets and 20 marines...

That might be partially true, but there are certainly other factors that contribute to 'fear', and are simply not present in NS. Lightning for one. Veil, eclipse and tanith are all well lit maps, which degrades the overal 'scare' factor. Let me just refer to Doom3 here, no matter how boring the repetative gameplay became, it held on to it's scary atmosphere. And even though I knew a monster would spawn at that and that corner, I would still be scared to **** because of the atmosphere.
Besides lightning, a lot of maps lack themes in their architecture. What is veil supposed to be? I really have no clue at all what I'm supposed to think about the enviroment. It just feels like an arena.
However, I don't think mappers are to blame for everything here. They're already pushing the HL engine to the limits with their maps, and there comes a point where you are just asking too much.
The thing that scares me most is when you feel comfortable with knowing you've searched an area and didn't find anything and then realizing that alien was hidden very well and jumps in your face.
I scream, then die, then laugh at myself for screaming... It's a cleansing process...
When a game can make you do that, you've found the sweet spot.
EDIT:
Also, NS recreates the feel of the monster chasing you when you're trying to get up a ladder and know that it's RIGHT behind you and is just a bit faster than you are. The immersion is dead-on.
Yeah, I have to agree, it really is scary when you first start to play, but after a while you've seen everything...I still get startled every once in a while, like when a skulk leaps at me through a door as I'm opening it, or when I'm just plain caught off guard by a cloaked onos 2 feet in front of me (half a second before I see the inside of its tummy)

I live for those moments... I just don't want every moment to be like that.
The thing I didn't like about Doom3 is that it kept you on the edge almost the entire time and kept me from feeling safe.
I play games to overcome adversity (or at least feel that way), but when the game makes me feel like a **** without any reprieve, I tend to shy away from it. Sure, I have a rocket launcher, but those little spider head things keep coming at me and I only have so many rockets. If I get to feel powerful at one point, it allows me to overcome the fear and "win the day" so-to-speak.

hm, at one point i was helping to pt a co map (i think it was made by mendasp)
and it had a VERY dark marine start and corridor
and believe me, i wanted dark corridors before that too...
but that was not funny,
you can forget the hl-flashlight, you cant really see ****, now aliens have the new cloaking
its good as it is i think
if we had more dar spots people would whine that it is too dark
and btw, bast has great lightning, you cant tell me that map is not dark enough, especially around feedwater
However, play a smaller game where the map isn't over crowded and you'll get your scary moments. When you're out alone and you hear the "click click" of little skulky claws running SOMEWHERE nearby, you'll get your tension.
When I started playing, the game was really atmospheric.
Then I started to play in leagues competitively. Which results in the need for gamma hax etc...
Now I play the game to try and frag the opposition (as a team) instead of getting scared, AvP style.
not as scary as your first bite by one of the black headcrabs. Just hearing that rattle is enough to make me crap my pants <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif' /><!--endemo--> You can forget about conserving ammo (something I always do in these games) when those buggers show up
The only thing that scares me quite honestly is Comming. I'm positively frightened to do it, but I love doing it - so intense, an adrenaline rush. That may sound weird to some of you, but its the only aspect of any game that's ever done it to me. I have even started breaking out in a cold sweat when Comming. Its...nerve-racking.

Quoted.
Especially when you must think VERY fast and be at like 3 places at once.
have you played doom3 =D
lightgamma 7
I also think more atmosphere would make it cooler to
and combat also desensatizes you, back when seeing an onos was a rare sight thats when they were scary (cuz they cost a 100 res and were worth it) now a days seeing an onos is like seeing a cow. there everywhere and its not really a big deal
We do need a mod of NS that makes things less fluffy though ';,,;'
and whoever talked about the oni just being a cow, its so true =D
oni are just nothing to fear these days, a couple of hmgers and ono's just a large blob of jelly waiting to be shot. no idea why a fade is 25 res less when its 10X more effective in good hands O_o
Yep, gameplay, not graphics or sound or models. Gameplay. Why?
In HL2, as you're trying to shoot that headcrab gnawing at your head or that zombie climbing up a pipe, you realize that if you die, that's it, game over, and you have to load from save point (yet another detriment to atmosphere factor). In NS, if you die, you don't have to worry as much - you'll respawn in 10 seconds and be on your way again.
as the other one said before ... play doom3
(its got not story or anything but it is scary ... well at least the first 15 mins <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> )
i still dont get what people find so amazing about ravenhom. when i played trough i found it quite boring (respawning zombies dont really contribute to the atmosphere)
<!--QuoteBegin-AvengerX+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (AvengerX)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->the only time you are "scared" is when you have fear of death, and like in most games, you don't really fear death unless you have something to lose from it. so when I'm a lone rine trying to ninja up a hive, I'm really really scared. or stuff like that<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
thats it ... when youve played ns for quite a time youll know where the skulks hide. and when youre attacked anyway you know where it comes from bacause you know which spot you forgot to check :/
getting up a pg alone while trying not to be heard by your opponents raises a lot more tension nowadays ... but simply the best is (as it was always) winning long games through teamplay. of course those games turn at least 2 or 3 times <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Now the single-player in NS2, well, that's a completely different story. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
