mmm....HL2 was kinda scary because of the dark atmosphere. if NS was darker, players will make it brighter so there's really no point in trying. and yeah, it could probably be done in single player.
I remember the first few times I played NS. My marine team ran off on me (maybe I noob and ran off alone... thats not important) and I was walking down a dark corridor (this is back when NS first came out, things were DARK). Steam shooting out or pipes and other sounds and I see something run past me, I turn around and there isn't anything there but I fired off my gun cause I knew something was lerking in the shadows. I started to run and just when I think I am safe.

I still miss the 1.0 days... the first couple, where everyone was a green recruit, just learning the gear, working toward effective strategies.... and after the turrets became TF dependant, fought back and forth. Things were scary, as they were new... maps were darker, occasionally you'd have a 'friendly' pick up a gun and blow your head off.
Stupid competative play, indirectly destroying the dark and moody areas of maps. :b
if you ask me, NS is avoiding the scary "leak yourself from what you see" thing, the only way to be scaired in NS is when something pops outa nowhere, and kills you with a loud noise, HL2 however, even though things are butt-ugly on my end, you feel fear change you in Ravenholom(am i right?)
I don't say competive playing kills the game, but its the exploit. While aliens couldn't see poop (and play fair, sometimes), and 'rines jack up the game, it was the only thing that could be done. But: Was it realy the only thing? Wasn't it possible to avoid gamma-jacking? I want the dark, shadowy hallways back - even when the powerstrip lamers come with it.
If you want dark maps then adjust your settings accordingly. Don't complain if other people actually want to see something when they play. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> I don't say they should not do it, I'm only saying that they should play it how it is intended and not lame on the others. I for my liked the dark areas (yes, even as marine. you have a flashlight, soldier). But I hated those marines that used powerstrip and did see me in a ZERO GAMMA area.
Skulks are build to ambush but they are to loud while moving fast marines stay clear from vents there are no shadow areas to hide Skulks are to weak to face marines directly around-the-corner ambushing is negated by the (imo to strong) mt
result? NS went dull. I'm playing now mostly Gunbound, Ragnarök and Rival Species. d'uh.
Nothing scarier than looking streight ahead looking at something moving like lightning towards you without making a sound and only realising at last second that its a bite of death.

NS had me freaked out, and that had me hooked.
