HL2's story was exceptionally good, but it's not put out in a manner that any idiot can find (eg, plays out like a 'real lifeish' situation rather than have the story slapped in your face)
You have to find the story, it won't find you, that's why there are newspapers with information about the portal storms, etc.
I really can't think of any other game that does this so well, I started out just as lost and confused as Freeman, and picked things up just like I would have if I were Freeman and I didn't know what the f*** was going on or where I was.
Anyhoo, the story is picked up from clues in the game.
the part were barney says the f word is covered up by some sort of explosion, iirc, but in the sound file you can actually hear it. I dont' remembre when it was, but I don't recall hearing that word.

On the actual game, I was disappointed. The story was awesome (or the story I have assumed <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->), and the physics side of gameplay was fantastic, but the gameplay revolving around combat was a let down. The AI seemed slapped together, and the weapons were also.. sub-par in my opinion. I could throw grenades further than my nade-launcher could, those poison headcrabs gave me grey hairs, the 9mm sounded like a paintball gun, the shotgun sounded like a 9mm, and the revolver, well, that was okay. The only thing that saved the game in combat was the grav-gun, which was pretty damn cool.
Basically, I bought the game because I thought it would be cool, but mostly because of the mod-potential, that's where it's at.

Incidently they were going to explain many bits (That and the train ride was going the be much longer and show monsters getting caught on barbed wire and stuff!) but they cut most of it. Also at Eli's lab they were going to get Eli to show off a slideshow and explain what happened. But they cut it.
Again Buy Raising the Bar. Not only is it full of cool and pretty pictures it has a lot of cool stuff that was cut.

The story is easy to understand if you look around, read the newspapers. You can figure _everything_ out in 15 minutes if you pay attention the whole game.
Also, Alyx is a crappy tool to make Gordon save the world. I didn't care about Alyx at all. I cared about capping Combine soldiers. Gordon, if he thought like me, would care mostly about getting some revenge on Breen because you know, he's the Administrator who caused the damn Black Mesa incident in the first place.
