Cyberpunk
<div class="IPBDescription">Another cyberpunk thread from me. Shh.</div> So, yeah, after Nem mentioned Transmetropoliton to me, I realized I REALLY felt like a cyberpunk injection. I'm going to make a library trip soon, and I'd really like suggestions for cyberpunk anything. Books, movies, games, comics, anime, etc. I love the setting, but have had a tough time finding stuff related to it. I haven't read Neuromancer, as much as I keep meaning to, I constantly forget to grab it. I know, heretic, etc, etc. So...yeah. Any suggestions for good cyberpunk stuff. Steampunk works, too.

That's all I'm gonna say on the matter <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I've only seen the anime in dub form but it's still fabby, infact the characters are so foul-mouthed it's hilarous yet still somehow ultra-cool XD
Both anime and manga.
you havn't read Neromancer yet?
Go.
Now.
And get everything else they have by Gibbson.
Oh, and once you do read Gibbson, you will undestand just howmuch SR rips off of him <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I know you love that remark, but it's not really relevant, if you ask me. Gibson freely admits that Neuromancer would've looked different had he not watched Blade Runner while writing it. Does that mean SR rips Philip K. D!ck off, too? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

oh, I don't care about SR ripping of Gibson/
I happen to be an avid SR fan. Part of what makes it great is that it IS heavily influenced by gibbson (and thus by blade runner).
Blade Runner and Gibson are the base of alot cyber punk (kinda like Tolkien is the base to alot of moder fantasy).
Standing on the sholders of giants thing.
ok, so ripping off isn't the correct word (though it is the one I prefer to use when there is an obvious influence)
oh, and can we give you a temp suspension for swear filter dodging?
(hehe <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->)
It's one of those Listmania's, full of Cyberpunk books. So I figured I'd post it.
Amen. Great game, and free!
Read em both, but why stop there?
Mona Lisa Overdrive (2nd in the Neuromancer Trilogy)
Count Zero (3rd in the Neuromancer Trilogy)
Depending on what you class as Cyberpunk, you could follow up these leads. They generally have high-tech society and hacker storylines (the series mentioned have at least one in their midst). The first four are quite accessible to those who might not really be taken in by Manga, but Patlabor has quite an information-based storyline and Virus is classic 'big eyes and mouths and overdone expressions' anime.
Ghost in the Shell (the Manga film)
Ghost in the Shell (the Manga series)
Cowboy Bebop (the Manga film)
Patlabor (Manga film)
Virus (Manga series)
Bump that.

Hehehe, if you want, include Blade Runner.
(Only DVD I've ever bothered to buy.)
it's gotta 28.8 Modem!!!
Sigh, because everyone knows running around on rollerblades, going to raves are totally what hackers do all the time.
I keep suggesting Gibson's short story collection, Burning Chrome. In my opinion significantly better than his novels.
Games are included, but there's almost none to suggest.
HACK THE PLANET!!

Oh god I love media stereotyping of hackers. It's so... weird. I mean, why aren't they ever shown as normal human beings? The only difference is that they know certain things of use, not much else.
Anyway here's a review from IMDB that I figured you might get a laugh out of;
<!--QuoteBegin-www.imdb.com+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (www.imdb.com)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Finally, there is a film which accurately portrays hackers as the "Cyber Robin Hoods", that they truly are. These brave and noble men and women are the truest American heroes of them all, and instantly draw comparison to the samurai of feudal Japan. Bound by their, "Cyber Bushido", They only use their abilities to protect the weak and innocent from tyrrany and oppression of large industry conglomerates, and looming, lurking offices of the goverment, and are not deserving of the metaphorical mental image of being mugged by Steve Urkel, that has been propogated by the mass media. So finally, their critics have received their comeuppance, in this masterpiece of celluloid retribution. The young and talented cast has an easily seen affection for the material, and have obviously done their research. Fisher Stevens attacks his role with a fervent gusto that hasn't been seen from him since Short Circuit, and it is his deftly nuanced performance that makes his character all too real, and anchors the picture. Also turning in top-notch performances are Jonny Lee Miller as the "Newbie" to this Loyal 47 Ronin-esque group, and a salad-days Angelina Jolie, as his elusive love interest. They're performances burn white-hot with the intensity and impetuousness of youth. Well-scripted, well-acted, and well-filmed, Hackers is a truly groundbreaking work, which could easily keep company with Rashomon or Fellini Satyricon in the lexicon of classic world cinema.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
