Comparing movies to books is pointless. they should be seen/read from their two respective perspectives if you ask me. and especially when Hollywood is in the picture, i dont doubt the screenplay douglas wrote, has been edited to the max. and they just use his name to get fans to get exited about it.

I just got back from it seeing it (Thursday = preview day in the UK).
How to do this without spoilers... time for some bad sentance structure I think.
Hmmm. I know the books, I'm a huge fan and have been for years. The film is good. The film isn't the book. There were a few standout, hilarious pieces that weren't in the book and some that were in the book and not in the film.
It's as I expected more or less, but not as all round bad as most are seeming to fear.
You know you're going to go see it, so I'll let you make your own minds up when you do. Just go with an open mind and don't sit their counting how many parts are wrong and you should enjoy it.
I will say I was dissapointed at one thing though - it was reported in my uni paper that there was a scene at the Jodrel Bank radio telescope that my old Cosmolgy lecturer was in as an extra (perks of being a Dr. of Cosmolgy and head of operations there I guess) and it's been cut out. Oh well.

I think she comes into the story on the third or fourth book?
BTW who has read the fifth book? Did anyone else like it, or did you all feel let down?
But this film is about the first book. There is no romance between Trillian or Arthur dent. Thats the joke. They are the last two humans on earth, and she isnt really at all interested in him.

God whoever wrote that needs to shoot himself in the head for being so blatant about not reading the book.
Pictures of myself coming home wearing the towel as either a bandanna, or arabic headdress also forthcoming.....
Who am I kidding, I'm still going to the movie. <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/nerd-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Also, everyone knows the answer to the ultimate question, <b>(it's 43)</b> but no one knows the question.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
43!? 43!!?? We must nuke them for their stupidity.
Im take it you didnt actually read teh books then? Arthur does indeed have romance in them. In fact he has sex while flying through the air in the books and lands on the wing of an airplane.
He gets all romantic with the girl who has a vision right before the earth gets flattened to make way for an intergalactic bypass or whatever it was.
I think she comes into the story on the third or fourth book?
BTW who has read the fifth book? Did anyone else like it, or did you all feel let down?
i thought it was about all the books? I thought it was like all of them rolled into one? Guess i'll just have to wait until i see it!!
There IS romance between Arthur and Trillian. It was hinted at in "Mostly Harmless" around the time Arthur meets Random.

Could've sworn that was done artificially....
Did anyone notice a cameo appearance by the Marvin from the TV show? He's in the Vogon building, waiting in line.
I didn't know that they could make an entire song (Which was quite good, I have to add) around just one sentence.

I hate to post anything even looking like spoilers, but yes, yes and yes <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Seconded. Just saw it at 1:45 today. (Approx 5 hours before this post.)
So;
Yes. Yes. (Yeah. the Marvin from the TV series was in the line, one of the two people I went with to see the movie pointed that out to me.) And Yes.
I loved it, because I forced myself to enjoy it for what it is instead of trying to police the movie mentally and go insane when it didn't follow the book exactly.
And no to whoever that was earlier that thought it was all the books. That would be like a 12 hour movie. So no.
No two version of H2G2 are alike, so I doubt anybody was expecting them to be "exactly like the books" (if anything, I should expect them to be like the TV series). From what I've read the problem is that:
A) Jokes are cut short for no aparent reason, often the punchline is cut
B) There is some new emphasis on slapstick jokes
C) New jokes aren't really funny
D) New plot makes even less sense then its supposed to
ect.

That review was fake.
