Improving Your Aim, How To?

<div class="IPBDescription">Especially on skulks</div> Hi, I'm kinda new to NS, but I have a bit of a problem. I can't hit ****. In other FPSs, I do fine, but for some odd reason, I just can't seem to get many kills in NS. Anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to improve my aim, especially using the LMG on skulks? I can't seem to swing around fast enough to keep a bead on them. (Even with my Razor's sensitivity cranked up.)

The second tip I have is for you to play around with your net settings. There are a few values that you can tweak for better hit detection. <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=91252' target='_blank'>This thread</a> discusses some of the changeable settings. To change them, make a userconfig.cfg file and put it in your ns directory. Try these:
<!--c1--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>CODE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='CODE'><!--ec1-->rate 25000 (quality cable)
cl_updaterate 50
cl_cmdrate 60
ex_interp 0.02
ex_extrapmax 10<!--c2--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--ec2--> Work from there to find what works for you.
It also sounds like you need to boost your sensitivity in the game itself; you can set your sensitivity in the in-game GUI.
Practice.
Practice.
DragonMech has a couple good suggestions, but they can only do so much.
Or once you have played for a while, have a couple of beers to keep yourself relaxed.
cl_updaterate 50
cl_cmdrate 60
ex_interp 0.02
ex_extrapmax 10<!--c2--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--ec2--> <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
Rate is capped at 20000
The default sv_maxupdaterate is 30 so using something higher than that with an equivalent interp will only serve to make aliens more choppy on the majority of servers.
cl_cmdrate should be equal to the server's/your max fps.
ex_interp should not necessarily be 1/update rate. I go for .016 behind what the 1/update rate would indicate making the model be rendered slightly ahead of the server confirmed hit box turning a near miss into instant skill.
ex_extrap smoothes out the model movement, but the area it smoothes does not represent server confirmed hitbox locations and thus you can shoot at the model on your screen perfectly and still miss due to the extrapolation. You want this value to be also low as possible without making aliens choppy. Default value of 1.2 works for most purposes.
<a href='http://www.customns.net' target='_blank'>http://www.customns.net</a>
If a skulk isn't jumping along the ground, intentionally aim low. You can always pull your crosshair back up. Duck isn't a tool for aiming, it's a tool for evading. You can hit things fine standing. But if you want to shoot floor hugger skulks, you can duck and you're on their level. But crouching makes you dodge kind of slow, so only duck if you're not going to have to jump away from teeth.
If there are skulks jumping around, they are probably doing one of two things, bunnyhopping, and jumping to evade fire. Bunnyhopping is something skulks and other aliens can do that involves a curving flightpath where they jump each time they hit the ground. You'll probably see them coming down long hallways at you going left right left right and jumping the whole time really fast. If you see that, try to match their left right and you'll put more bullets into them. You can even aim right down the middle and they can't help but go into it. Skulks that jump to evade fire or to bite your face are kind of hard to hit because it looks like they are carouselling in midair some times. Just shoot for the middle of the skulk body and you'll hit them. Right for the belly, just above the space between their front and back legs.
If a skulk is trying to hide, you should use your pistol and try to smoke it out from behind the box or corner it's clinging to, if you can't see much of the skulk's body. Even if it looks like you can just barely see the skulk's front legs, you can probably hit it if you put your pistol-dot on the right place and shoot really fast without jiggling the mouse.
Thats just basic stuff, if you knew it already just move along.
What mouse do you use?
I've found that an optical mouse WITH wire worksthe best for me.
What sensivity setting do you use? High? Low? Poke around with it!

Don't want those reflexes to be too good after all. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Well, most of the important stuff has been mentioned here already. Turn off mouse accel, get a reasonably sized mousepad, get your mousecable out of the way - all that stuff. Then aid your aiming with movement - both evasive to just keep that distance in melee, and aggressive to keep your line of fire setup and be able to exploit the easy shots. Alot of people that have decent aims just don't exploit them nearly enough.
@CloudKing:
Wait what... so with updaterate 30 we're talking 0.033 as 1/updaterate, and 0.049 interp as 'optimally lagged hitboxes', did I get that right? Because it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.
But then again, I never really needed to know, given I normally just spam with the GL, or spray the HMG sauce everywhere...
Recommendations for mouse/pad combinations would have to be the Logitech MX510 USB mouse, and the IceMat, either the original, or the IceMat2. A fantastic gamers mouse, backed up with quite possibly the coolest mouse pad in the world. I had people asking me where I got mine from at i21...
Also, I find that default+1 in the MouseWare options, no acceleration, and a sensitivy of 12.8 work perfectly for me. But then again, I have my Halo sens up to 10, and my UT2004 one up to 7.25..

Optimally lagged is individual preference of course, I use a 16-17ms lag so .05 interp with default of 30 update rate server. If you are a robot/aimbot then having the hitboxes match up perfectly would be ideal, however since a human cannot react instantly to movement drawing the model before the server confirmed hitbox changes allows you to shoot on target a higher percentage of the time and "react" faster.
And use a <img src='http://www.fentek-ind.com/smltmww.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
Yep. Best get those laughs in now son, because you sure won't be laughing when I don't miss a single parasite and all the ns cheerleaders are lining up to suck my ****. Once you try track you never go back. Don't make me demonstrate the might of the trackball.

True, people who actually learn how to use it can do miracles with it, a friend of mine uses it for about everything including FPS games, and he rocks with it.
I still swear by my Logitech MX310 though <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

huh?
Try turning it down to as low as it will go, without making it look like other players are constantly lagging. Mine is probably pretty high, but you dont even need complete interpolation to make it look even, i mean at 40 fps, thats .025 for what would be required to interpolate a whole frame, but im sure .02 or a smaller value would be hardly, or not, noticable to alot of people.
(note that I just made up that number, i havent actually tried .025 @ 40 fps.)
But to stay on topic, ill bet that practice makes a bigger difference than interpolation, hardware, and input device. I mean you can only go so far with an auful optical mouse or a 28.8 modem, but beyond the basics, most of the difference is practice, at least in my experience.

I've never understoof those five things very well sadly. I know what those's cvars all stand for but have poor knowledge of what they do / what effects adjusting them have simply because I don't bother with them usually. Perhaps there is something I can do to optimize?
FYI: My sensitivity for HL & its mods are all at 10.000000; Halo and other usu maxed. I use an optical mouse.
One thing I'd recommend is praticing. To become good with shooting a weapon and stay sharp most police and military go to a riflerange. With FPS gamming is is also the same. Ever week I make it a point to go take 30min or more to just focus on keeping my aim sharp. In my rotutine I try to work on different target types.<ul><li>Fixed target, fixed source</li><li>Fixed target, moving source </li><li>Moving target, fixed source</li><li>Moving target, moving source</li></ul>(endless variations, in midair, in reverse, while strafing while duck-jumping, different target sizes, different weapons some instant some delayed some arced, different velocities of target and source, etc.)
I can still sink a TFC grenade in a 32by32 or larger opening from any angle moving in any direction as long as I'm in throwing range. I can make bullet holes with 1-2 deviation with any motion moving down in a straight line with the NS pistol. Can still get the 3600 degree one shot mark with any weapon at 256 (though shotguns are difficult to evaluate so done closer, more like <128), best time ~8 sec I think. There are tons of things you can do to practice on your own. Additionally, it should be mentioned any good clan practices together and works on their teamwork and communication.
Download an aimbot. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

i use 20 - which on my mouse makes my view turn 520 degree with just over a 90 degree turn of the mouse
it lets me track skulks pretty easily, but it SUCKS for anyhting other than close - medium range because it moves like 5 pixels at a time, that sounds small but its actually enough to put your crosshair off target by quite a bit at range

Get a script that allows you to adjust your sens for sniping, then.
but i dont have it in NS, because even as marines most of the combat is pretty much in your face.
the only problem is, my mouse takes spazm attacks frequently, and i end up doin a 134324 degree mctwist <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Don't even get me started on grenades. I have been banned permanently from some Halo servers, have had my last 9 games in the iGames CTF league recorded, and have been kicked from one iGames match for my un-natural grenade skill.
I can put a grenade anywhere I want on Halo, even getting it into the passenger side of a Warthog at one point (I'm talking frags, not sticky bombs...). Grenades landing in the texture crease of the Scorpion Tank, so they kill the driver, everything...
I actually got a written apology from the director of iGames for being kicked, but the opposition wouldn't replay the match, even when I was found innocent. It was actually my idea to have my games recorded, to stop the other centers bitching about it...
